In response to Reply # 143

they're not worldwide at all.

So either you have tweeted about this, or people you follow are.

If you look by location, there is no city in the US where Nate Parker is trending.

you just follow a lot of the kind of people who tweet endlessly about this (judging by the search you posted, it's mostly people criticizing other people for bringing it up)

so if the audience they do have (blk women),
for the only roles they do get early on (rom-com love interest,thug/criminal, "blk film" role) feel slighted, that's their prerogative

but hardwick being the perfect example, despite him marrying (???) over beauty, he is still working

its not blk women fault nobody called him for agents of shield

Luke should be a bigger star.

Shit, Omari should be a bigger star.

Nate should become a star. Leading man star. Not black movie leading man star, but star.

not a dozen hypotheticals and 'stop pretending, of course that's how it is'

if a film flops cuz 5% of the population didnt see it, guess what? it prolly wasn't a good film.

and box office is a bad arena. film studios don't 'take chances' on casting the way tv has recently. again, not twitter and bloggers' fault

will had a baked-in tv audience, stemming from a baked-in hiphop audience, and a string of super mainstream vehicles that came from a formula him and his people used to figure what would become hits or not

meanwhile Cheadle crowdfunding for miles davis and nate parker had to use his own bread.

if the studios aint calling or aint interested, they aint interested

idris and chiwetel got probably the biggest difference in response from blk women as possible. they would kill u over one and wouldn't notice the other if he stood right in front of em.
but as far as Hollywood goes, career-wise they about neck and neck

A movie made for $10 millie and gets $20 millie before it's actually released just for the rights? VERY impressive...I heard Gabriel Union is in the movie too...

I wonder if the studios gonna REALLY let Nate Dogg take it there...Nat Turner was killing EVERYBODY associated with slavery...from the cradle on up.....

Everyone else around him was smashing skulls, but not him. If the movie keeps the camera focused on him, there wouldn't be that many whiteys getting lanced on screen.

Of course I hope there's John Wick amounts of of death, but hey.

Byron MONEY quote on the offer.....

"Yes, we did make a bid for $20 million and a wide theatrical release for this outstanding film," Allen said. "Nate Parker made the right decision by going with Fox Searchlight, and we made the right bid. I’m very proud of Nate, and he owes me lunch.”

i'm still beating a drum for a Harriet Tubman epic motion picture. w/a theatrical release.

the coming HBO movie is cool but i'll be disappointed if that's all the treatment her story receives.

as much as i'm excited about this Nat Turner movie, i think Harriet's story is better - largely b/c it has a happy/happier ending since Harriet survives, unlike Nat.

but anyway...this is about the Nat Turner movie. i'm thrilled it appears the movie will get a theatrical release. that's great.

fuck you.

a lot of people jumped on that #oscarsowhite bandwagon. I hope those same people come out to see the movie in theaters because that matters more. A lot of great black films aren't even getting the greenlight because the community they're targeting haven't greenlit similar movies with their dollars.

acting is a business and he (read: his agent) is really good at marketing him..so he's successful...directors keep hiring him...and i'm willing to bet it's because he's professional on set, fun to be around and takes direction well. that's equal to be "good" in most director's eyes.

On one hand, great a Black film earned this honor and is about a man revolting against oppresion.

On the other hand, ANOTHER SLAVE MOVIE? Let me get this straight: the only films that are marketed with extensive budgets about us are slave films or other films with questionable content?

We need more Pursuit of Happyness and less slave films. What message is Hollywood trying to send with this BS? We need some contemporary positivity that touches on real scenarios that we go through not slave movies in 2016.

http://jezebel.com/im-so-damn-tired-of-slave-movies-1755250873

Of the six films actually produced by black people that have been nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, three are about slavery or slavery-adjacent violence against black people (The Color Purple, Django Unchained and 12 Years A Slave). The fourth is Selma and the fifth is Precious, two movies that focus on black women being emotionally and physically beaten down in almost every way possible. The last is the The Blind Side, where a white woman who butts in and makes a black kid who was already a promising athlete into an even better athlete.

^^ This is missing that film with Kevin Costner playing white savior to urban youth.

It's wikipedia but it gives a frame of reference for my scust at this fuckery:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_featuring_slavery

Look at recent history over the past 11 years. The lack of slave movies in 09 and 11 are more than made up for by the four slave films in 2013.

TL;DR Hollywood needs to stop being lazy and actually promote contemporary black cinema. There's a market for a coming to age story of black child and journeys with their dog. All these children being born into different diasporas and they have a future of slave films to look forward to because hollywood is lazy SMH.

i already read that shit piece early in the week, and felt bad for the writer, but here is a rebuttal
http://www.thenation.com/article/why-im-ready-for-more-slavery-films/

further, outside of Sankofa and 12yrs A Slave, most (of the very few) slave narratives movies are basura. and lofl at calling that cartoon Django a Slave narrative, it was a revenge flick set in the plantation

and finally, there are plenty of good to dope ass Black films being made; off the top:

Selma
Black Dynamite
Fruitvale Station
Beasts of No Nation
Johnny Mad Dog
Pariah
Creed
Middle of Nowhere
Dear, White People
Dope
Tangerine
Night Catches Us
Mister & Pete
An Oversimplification of Her Beauty
Get on Up
Straight Outta Compton
Girlhood
42
Ballast
I Will Follow
Chi-raq
Medicine for Melancholy
On the Outs
ATL
The Butler
Ayanda
Best Man's holiday
Luv

and trash shit like:
No Good Deed
Obsessed
Addicted
The Perfect Guy

all these films have been released in the last ten years. I didn't add docs, nor films with Black leads (ala Wil and Denzel), or made by Black directors w/o a "Black theme" (McQueen's Hunder or Shame)

so it seems you have a problem with coming to terms with an essential part of our historical narrative(s) being repp'd on screen

blud, we don't have a Tubman movie. ITS 2016. and we do. not. have. a tubman movie. POR QUE.

A Woman Called Moses is a Harriet Tubman movie..

I have no issue with coming to grips with our history but I am damn tired of slave movies. Straight Outta Compton tarnished Eazy-E's legacy and is a farce so that does not count. Chiraq is already panned by actual citizens of Chicago.

I want contemporary films that portray the richness of our experience in America given the same treatment and support the majority gets. Tossing us slave films is not going to do it. I'm damn sick and tired of our sisters receiving poor treatment by being victims of abuse or rape in movies. It's a generation that grows up and sees this. These films, all of them, are the motion pictures of their youth so Hollywood needs to do better.

Slave movies are the new autotune for Hollywood so someone pls save us.

SOC made Eazy E look terrible and not the true G he was. This was film made to make Dre and Cube look great.

The butler doesn't count because of the premise. No, it is not an example of a contemporary film. Why is it so hard for Hollywood to market and promote great contemporary black films? Way to dodge the rest of my response.

wrong and wrong. made him look human, more human than that hippy sanitized version we got of Dre, which was bullshit. Cube's representation was fantastic from a narrative and acting level

I'm not dodging anything. i replied to your bullshit claim that we only get slave films... You listed three from the past 30 YEARS: 12, Django and Color Purple. I listed near 30 movies from the last ten that had nuthin to do with slavery.

but in terms of why hollowood don't promote shit that is Black and not tied to the pain of hisotry and ghettos, we both know why that is

You Cuban B'd the shit out of Amistad and a good chunk of that wiki list of films set during slavery. That Harriet Tubman film counts as well. While you bullshitting it was three slave films marketed in 30 years and that wiki list proves it.

Yeah, I'm bitching and hurt because Hollywood won't acknowledge the vast majority of our experiences. ATL was good as was Soul Food and The Best Man. Where are the equivalent of these films in 2016? That's right Hollywood wants more slave shit. I cannot support this situation at all.

what wiki list fam? did you link it? i might of missed it. And I said films YOU listed... and come on breh, Amistad? no shit it's a slave narrative, but it's basura. My initial point WAS we need more slave narrative 'cause the majority, like Amistad, have been sanitized bullshit...

>Yeah, I'm bitching and hurt because Hollywood won't

I liked ATL. I haven't seen Soul Food and The Best Man in years, but these films:

Pariah, Creed, Middle of Nowhere, Dear White People, Dope, Tangerine, Mister & Pete, An Oversimplification of Her Beauty, Girlhood, Ayanda, Best Man's holiday

are all from the last 4 years. Unless you are talking about a very specific middle class Blackness that you wish to see over and over again

so not only do we need MORE Slave Movies, but we need more movies (AND BOOKS) about the various contemporary Black experiences (from hood to suburb), and Black ppl in the future

... my point. Yes, slavery and civil rights are a part of our history. We've had plenty of movies that cover this.

My points:

Where are the films that involve our young women aspiring to greatness not based on previous history but modern times? Our experience is so rich and diverse that we need films that encompass all of it. We need more Pursuit of Happyness and less slave movies heavily marketed towards us.

What does it say to our younger generation that the most of the movies Hollywood movies marketed towards us and promoted heavily are slave movies/historical films with black actors?

Save for those pertaining to shackles, drugs, guns, and life behind the redline?

What Hollywood appreciates more than a good narritive (assuming it ever did) is a high monetary return on a low investment.

Of themes when it comes to black films. I dare say few if any black films made in America portray any kind of reality outside of some sort of struggle. Personally I can look around and see plenty of that without sitting in a theatre for 2 hours.

but there are other types of struggles we could be seeing black characters deal with which aren't the same old tropes.

I've had to skip all the recent slave/ servant/ Civil Rights type movies cause goddamn it's just too much. That is not the only thing black folks went through or done.

Things don't end to well for Nat - I mean his skin was used to make a purse for fucks sake!! (I didn't hear that n school, but I did here he was beheaded. Turns out a lot worst was done with his body.)

Things didn't end well in Braveheart either--- but that film made a bunch of money.

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*
