"The Logistical Nightmare: Moving My Family in 2 Months (Long)" Mon Jan-25-16 10:29 AM by DVS
Some of you who are friends with me on BookFace may have seen some cryptic farewells in my timeline. I've gotta fle3sh this shit out so this will be my brain dump.
I work in a dying cost center of a thriving company. I knew that I would have to leave my position before the technology was phased out. In 2014...I started taking courses to ramp up my skills and firing off resumes. Maaaaaaaaad resumes.
2014...1 interview...no bite...100 resumes sent 2015...3 interviews...no bite...150 resumes sent 2016...2 interviews....1 bite...50 resumes sent
Okay...so let's explain the situation. The day before Xmas, 2015....the mangers shut down the shop for a meeting...and announced that my center was 48 people over headcount. I am 21 from the bottom so I was considered "surplused"...and they offered a retirement package to see who was "at risk"
Around this time I get the nibble from the new job...in Chattanooga. It's an expanding industry with the same company I work for...but the ceiling would be removed by moving from Union to Management. Oh...yeah...the net gets removed too but I'm awesome so fuck a net.
Alright....so on the date of my 15th anniversary, on the day I leave for Atlanta...The job informs me that my Union position is saved PROVIDED I nominate for EVERY job from the list they provide that is lateral (same pay) and commutable (within 35 miles). The selections have to be submitted to HR by the day I return from Atlanta (5 days later) or I lose my job with no severance. FOCK! Oh...and by the way...there are 22 people looking at the same list...and I get the 22nd choice due to seniority. **gillie face**
So...I scramble around looking at the positions. Of the 30ish positions, 8 are in Chicago (those are gone)....12 are in nearby N/S/W suburbs (those gone too)...then we start getting shit that's RIGHT on the border of their lateral/commutable boundaries. Of course...I get the one position OUTSIDE of that boundary that I nominated for because it'd be close to my niece and her family...Rockford, IL.
At this same time, tho...I sent an email to the manager I interviewed with in Chattanooga like "Dude...you see this list? These are the jobs I have to select from...so if you ever doubted whether I would be willing to relocate? Don't!"
Manager says thanks for the info and wishes me a good trip. By the time I touch wheels down in Chicago again from Atlanta...Shesus is like "Call the manager"
Me: Yes sir...you wanted to speak with me? Him: So...you are aware that you are moving to a region where the top pay grade is 15k Less than Chicago...so you won't be getting a pay bump? Me: Yes sir...I'm aware of that. Him: And you know that with management...there is no relocation budget? Me: Yes sir...I'm aware of that. Him: Well...if you can work within those parameters...I'd like to offer you the job.
So, kind souls...how the hell do I finance a long term move of my entire family to Chattanooga, TN...where I have NO network of friends...with no savings to speak of...for an opportunity that I've been applying for 3 years to get and easy 6 figure + payoffs 3-5 years down the line?
I'm not sure if it would be and easy decision for me either. I'd have to trust in you a lot like, you won't go down there and f' things up I'm alone with the babies...
Idk it would be a true test of the marriage tho Im'ma pray that whatever decision made y'all get through it

a) get a loan from fam or some damn body...
b) don't move the family yet. go down by yourself and rent a room and wait until the summer to move the family down.
3) use the credit cards
**************** TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

sell off everything except bare essentials maybe that money will help some (its amazing how little we can live with when we have to)
definitely start checking out cost of accomodation in the new place - i dont know about moving and then coming for family later- makes sense if you can afford the additional expense but if housing is cheaper where you are moving too... in the longer run its cheaper just to move at once i wouldnt use credit cards, either
i'd say- start by costing how much moving will cost cost of renting a truck and associated expenses rent + deposit at new place etc etc it might be overwhelming at first, but having a figure to work with makes it more feasible to start figuring out how to deal

I'd play it as close to the low end of my range as possible, like some kids might have to double up for a year. How many kids again?
On the plus side, Chattanooga rent is way less than Chicago, but could get pricey depending on where you want to live.
How many cars y'all got? can you sell one? Downgrade (if you're paying on it)
I agree with akon, that you guys should think about selling a lot of stuff that you don't "need", or maybe even selling essentials too and trying to re-buy cheaper down there. But I know all that's easier said than done, especially with a SO that may not be down w/ that.
That no relo is a bitch tho. You got some fam that could help you caravan it down to TN? That could cut a lot of cost.
i would write a list (yes im big on lists) of life's essentials -that you pay for and everything else outside of that would be in a 'not needed column' then figure out what you can live without for the time-being from that list might include - cable -if you are paying for it and whatever other things you subscribe to
the main thing would be to simplify your expenses - it helps to develop a spreadsheet of monthly expenses, if you dont already have one, i.e.

Don't worry about the high end amenities. You can tough it out without a Pool or Tennis court for the winter and spring. Choose an area with a good school and let your kids catch the bus. In 6 Months make the Power Move to a better spot. . . .

That's how I ended up in Atlanta from Charlotte, but I got lucky.
Somebody down here had their SIPP papers in, and I slid right in, but it was still a represented position, so they paid for the move.
Long story short though....I was able to crash with a friend of a friend for a couple of months. Left wifey and baby girl in Charlotte until I found us somewhere to move.
I just might be in your position come March. I've put a gang of resumes out there...mainly in places we have family (Chicago, Cali), for management jobs, cause it really aint no jobs nowhere..

Dude...I had to get the hell out of the Union Shop. They are replacing our job title with young hungry idiots at 20k less because...well...'Murica.
Keep firing those resumes out...then use WebPhone wisely.
When I started putting in for TN? I sent a direct email to every Area Manager in the area...and they hit me back and steered me towards the hiring manager for the Job Req.
My wife still mad at me for not taking the represented position (and the move stipend) and just going downstate to Springfield.
I had to explain to her that if you trying to hold that job until 2020...you don't want to be in the union.
20. "RE: You CWA?- *sigh* yeah..." In response to Reply # 18
Thats how they got us mayne...
Gave us the whole 20/20 spiel, then never gave us time to take the classes..
Then wouldnt give us access to the courses until after the contract was ratified..
THEN ratified the contract, then surplussed us.
Theres my department (MLAC/GNAC) and the group upstairs (RCMAC), so about 40 people going for about...well, we dont know how many positions, cause we havent had THAT meeting yet...smh..word is theres only about 10 positions. I got 17 years, and I know im gonna be ass out..

Well, my hubby's job actually paid for the relocation. But, you know what...if I could go back...
I would have stayed in NC and chilled for a year while he was out here stacking. Seriously. Cali is so expensive. And, I'm looking for jobs. I'm getting bites. But, I am not selling myself to the best of my abilities (I'm working on it). Rai wouldn't have that problem.
I know you would prefer to take the fam with you...and given the state of Chicago these days, I don't blame you at all. But, maybe you should at least for a month or so, give yourself time to get things set up for them. Give Rai the time to find something in the area. Give you guys time to stack money up so that you can afford the relocation. And, downsize as much as possible. Also, it will give you time to research the area for the right schools and whatnot.
Just my .02.
