Trump: I could shoot somebody and wouldn’t lose any voters

BY JILL COLVIN, ASSOCIATED PRESS January 23, 2016 at 3:31 PM EST

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa — Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump says his supporters are so loyal they would stick with him even if he stood in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shot somebody.

Trump was addressing a rally Saturday at a Christian school, Dordt College, in Sioux Center, Iowa.

In addition to criticizing his rivals, Trump went after conservative radio host Glenn Beck, who will be appearing at two rallies with Ted Cruz later in the day.

Beck is among nearly two dozen conservative thinkers who penned anti-Trump essays for National Review magazine.

Cruz is Trump’s most serious challenger in early-voting Iowa.

Several Republican contenders are in the state this weekend, with just nine days to go before Iowa’s caucuses open the voting in the 2016 campaign.

There's no way Trump is serious and I doubt Congress supports his agenda. Cruz is not a naturalized citizen so WE NEED TO SEE HIS BIRTH CERTIFICATE AND HIS CANDIDACY IS ILLEGITIMATE. Cruz is a manchurian candidate for socialist Canada designed to destroy America and set back the Republican party for 20 years.

Where's EmptyCompliment when you need her?

He definitely is sinister. Manipulates people and is driven by end justifies the means.

But he is a smart guy, super well educated and this might be all a show to gain power. Once he gets power he may become reasonable.

Once Trump gains power he will easily destroy america...not even joking...He is easily a meglomaniac narracist in the vein of Hilter, Musilini, Mugabe, etc.

He's just a capitalist egomaniac. He doesn't care all that much about small government, or the constitution, or the bible, or what the right considers family values. But he is staunchly anti-pc and probably does want to make sure minorities know their place.

That's why just about everyone who knows him can't stand him.

Problem with Cruz is he believes he's always the smartest guy in the room, and he'd probably let the world burn before taking someone's advice, or taking any action he thinks violates his 'conservative principals'. He's also a religious nut.

Not to say Trump doesn't possess some of those same qualities. he's an attention whore with some fascist tendencies, but he's also partially just an entertainer, I think underneath it, he's not quite as horrible a human being as Cruz, and in some instances would have a conscience.

He obviously doesn't know jack about how government works. But I think he's saying all this crazy nonsense just to get folks worked up. He's playing the outsider card super-hard.

There's a small part of me that thinks he's doing all this just to throw a wrench in the GOP's game.

I think a Trump administration would be a joke but I'm not sure that he'd actually try to run with this insane nonsense he's been spitting.

Trump already admitted somewhat recently he had (has?) "NY values"

Trump NY values

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHAHKGP10yc

Cruz is a true believer in right-wing ideology. And right-wing true believers GO ALL THE WAY WITH THEIR THING - NO QUESTION - NO MATTER WHAT

A man like Trump who is trying to please whoever he has to (GOP voters for the GOP primaries now, the whole spectrum of the country later) probably won't go all the way with right-wing ideology no matter what.

Suddenly they're calling him out for not having any substance behind his proposals, and complaining that Trump is resorting to personal attacks. All the shit they've ignored for the last 6 months, but now that it's aimed at Cruz, they're acting all indignant about it.

They fucking love that Cruz because as you said, he's as true believer as they come. All week they've been attacking Trumps conservative street cred.

These radio hosts like Mark Levin are convinced that Romney, and McCain ONLY lost because they're not conservative enough. I imagine Cruz is of that same mindset, so i don't see him going the conventional route of trying to make his way back to the center. it will be more like him trying to pull the public to the right by selling them on true conservatism.

All Trump has to do is scale back his rudeness a few notches but still stay enough on the anti-muslim anti-political correctness makeamericafuckyeahagain thing.

Makes ya think.....would american muslims satisfy the refugee status needed in other countries if Trump was elected? Latino americans too. Taking his statements at face value....there might be something there.

even the off chance of her being given the keys

i never thought Bush was as dumb of a person as everyone says, but he was simple minded, and unfit to lead, and his run was pure disaster

this one is flat out dumb, simple minded, batshit nuts, maybe the most uninformed about the world political figure we've ever had. it would probably take 2 weeks for her to destroy us all.

all isis would have to do is figure out how to get trump out of the way and they've won.

In response to Reply # 32

The right-wing is the majority in the USA

because the right-wing saw President Obama get elected twice and they (if Trump or Cruz or another GOP candidate wins) absorbed that seemingly big hit, recovered and regrouped, came back and proved that even by winning 2 elections with a supposedly anti-USA socialist candidate like President Barack Obama, the Dem's really didn't change the reality that the USA is truly a right-wing country.

So that's what left-wing people leaving proves.

And if the right-wing is the true majority of this country, why is anybody pushing for Bernie Sanders?

Sanders should have absolutely no crossover appeal in a truly right-wing country.

GOP win.

And many are putting up vibes like Trump has a good chance of winning.

so if they keep claiming those 2 things:

1) A GOP win would be SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BAD!!!!!!

2) Trump has a good chance of winning

I really want to get to "why are people risking this Sanders thing if the country is so potentially really feeling Trump-like?"

Where does Sanders fit if there is so much seemingly Trump vibes in the air?

will work no matter what. And that is Cruz. He is the talk radio right wing man.

Trump wants to be everybody's entertainer even if now he has to please the GOP specifically in the GOP primaries.

Cruz definitely wants to please his right-wing talk radio people. Even if he would try to be vague and poised in the general election.

Trump has already said that people like him and that he is a deal maker who can get things done with the whole Congress.

Cruz is known in Congress to ALWAYS say that working with Dems is bad. So Cruz never saw himself as working with Dems AT ALL.

Yes, that bad.

mostly all the shit that was gonna happen anyway as long as the president just sat back and let it happen.

while obama is given zero credit, Romney would be seen as the guy who saved us from obama. The shrewed businessman who turned the economy around. they'd probably be proposing him for mount rushmore.

that's the real reason he wont run again. that was his big chance

Didn't want the first black president to be a one termer and it was clear that a recovery was right around the corner and whoever was president was going to get credit for it. That and Romney would not go tough on banks and wall streets (which Obama really hasn't either but yeah).

Other than that I don't Romney would have been a dramatically different policy maker.

When he ran for the GOP last time, he seemed like a reasonable man. I think part of why he wasnt considered is what worked against Romney early on, which was the Mormon thing. But he seemed like a decent guy.

John Kasich seems reasonable too. Or maybe since Cruz and Trump are so crazy, it makes him look so much better.

Volunteers for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz's Republican presidential campaign will be distributing water on Wednesday to residents of Flint, Michigan -- but apparently, only to anti-abortion groups.

Wendy Lynn Day, the Michigan state director for the Cruz campaign, announced on Facebook last week that the water will be delivered to crisis pregnancy centers for "expecting moms and moms of little ones."

Those aid efforts will assist only a small portion of the Flint's approximately 100,000 residents, who have been suffering from lead poisoning and a lack of clean water since 2014, when the city decided to cut costs by switching its water supply.

Day reportedly said the donations underscored Cruz's "pro-life values." Her Facebook post didn't mention whether the campaign will also donate water to children who are already suffering from lead poisoning, or to other city residents.

Commenters on Twitter denounced the senator's targeted donations. Pro-abortion rights advocates say crisis pregnancy centers use misinformation and manipulation to convince pregnant women to forgo abortions.

NARAL Pro-Choice America called the Cruz campaign's announcement "a new low." Other commenters criticized the donations as a politically opportunistic move.

Cruz's campaign is requesting donations for its efforts in Flint. Groups like the American Red Cross and Flint Community Schools are also accepting donations of water and money to assist residents during the crisis.

The Cruz campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Huffington Post.

Yep. Makes me wonder why they haven't started directly forming a gang behind Rubio yet. You can see inklings of it in the press but at some point...you've got to expect the establishment make a mass migration to his campaign.

Can't help but kinda see it like man.....alot of these so-called 'radical' ideas he has proposing are proven to be viable by the majority of other western countries. I'm seeing that there is an invisible ceiling for the American left. It's hard for them to be imagine some of these things because they seem so GOOD. Every citizen of Canada gets 12 months of payed leave from their job. Doesn't matter who you work for. And the 12 months can be divided up between the 2 parents.

I get the sense that Americans have a hard time conceiving something like that is POSSIBLE. IT IS! You guys get the WORST leave for childbirth out of all developed countries. WHY? You're the richest country! Minimum wage being $15.......free tuition.....these are NOT pipe dreams. These things are a way of life in other rich countries. Taken for granted almost.....I look at the cost of healthcare in the US....the cost of tuition....the wages....the weak employer regulations....man, how do you guys do it? And more importantly, WHY? The relative cost it would take to make your society more civil is NOTHING compared to the profits of the 1%. Like a drop in a bucket.

Wait, explain this. I must be parsing it badly.

If every citizen has 12 months of leave, how does anyone actually go to work?

Wiki says Canada has a statuatory requirement of 10 days. Works out at 16-20 depending on public holidays.

UK is at 20, 28 with public holidays.

Still, both are a whole lot better than the United States total of fuck all.

Or are you talking Maternity/Paternity?

He has no idea how the political process actually works.

He'd spend 4 years complaining about the "system" being stacked against "patriotic Americans who want to get stuff done to make this country great again" and then fuck off having achieved nothing except make a lot of people very angry and/or afraid.

Cruz DOES know how the political process works and could be a genuine danger.

I honestly can't believe the US will seriously consider either of them - we were all told the GOP were looking dangerous 4 years ago too, but even with Romney pulling the popular vote closer Obama had him by over 50% in the actual electoral college.

Don't believe the hype. Pick the most progressive Democrat you can and start BUILDING.

Jerry Falwell Jr. Endorses Trump

Evangelical leader and Liberty University president Jerry Falwell Jr. endorsed Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Tuesday. Falwell said Trump is “a successful executive and entrepreneur, a wonderful father and a man who I believe can lead our country to greatness again.” The leading evangelical's endorsement comes days before the Iowa caucuses and just a week after Sarah Palin, another devout Christian.

I mean I wouldn't that type of person as a boss but having a president that is well liked by everyone isn't a pre-requisite for me.

I mean I understand that being well liked is a good indicator of a person's character. However, there are alot of great people in history who weren't particularly liked.

Maybe I'm not doing the hate for him justice...Cruz' base is the evangelicals...That's what got him into office. And that's been the biggest support base for him...Until arguably the most powerful evangelical voice just came out in support for Trump...

If the people in your own base are looking at you with the screw face AND none of the other Senators are stomping for you, that's saying a lot....

is fucked up as Trump is...he'd be completely ineffective...nothing would get done

so you'd rather have someone with real dangerous/destructive plans who knows the system and has experience doing so versus someone who is saying anything to get in power but has little plans once there (he literally has no plans except to build a wall which won't happen)

vote the ineffective one not the effective one who has proven he actually believes in evil

He will force the Republican Party to either resemble something legitimate or crumble. The craziest shit he is talking about wouldn't even be feasible in a dictatorship, let alone a place with some illusion of checks and balances. A wall with Mexico? COINTELPRO for mosques? None of this shit is ever going to happen. I think the damage he does to the right will be greater than the damage he does to the country. Conversely Cruz is a legitimately scary, very conservative and season politician. I have no interest in seeing what he can do in office whatsoever.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Trump's incompetence is dangerous because he thinks he's the smartest guy in the room....He's a classic narcissist....

It's one thing to be a W. Bush who lacked simple intellectual curiosity and saw his White House get highjacked by Dick Cheany.....

It's quite another to be a Presidential candidate (Trump) who doesn't feel the need to study up on foreign policy because he believes he has all the answers....

Trump has the emotional foundation of a 12 year old girl....That's scary as fuck...

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

But I hear you. Cruz is a dangerous ideologue. Trump isn't an idealoge at all, and the only think Trump believes in is Trump. So we'll get a series of "Uhh.. you can't do that mr president", behind closed doors and Trump throwing tantrums and firing people... or trying to fire people who don't let him do what he wants, or trying to publicly shame anyone who gets in his way. Shit will be a disaster. He pretty much thinks it's all fun and games. It's hard to say how much shit he would be allowed to pull.

That said, i still think Cruz is a worse choice. It's just much closer than it was a couple months ago.
