Founder RZA Says Dressing Better Could Prevent Police Harassment and All Lives Matter, Which Is Why He Doesn’t Eat Meat
RZA’s about to become someone people may not want to f--k with after these comments.

Wu-Tang Clan founder RZA had some interesting thoughts to share during a recent interview on Bloomberg’s With All Due Respect. The rapper-director spoke on everything from today’s political climate to the much-talked-about topic of the Black Lives Matter movement and law enforcement.

But it’s his comments about BLM and law enforcement that have some people shaking their heads. When asked about BLM, he definitely gave an interesting response.

“Of course black lives matter,” RZA said. “All lives matter. I stopped eating meat because their lives matter to me. I don’t think it’s necessary for us to grow a cow to kill it.”

Unfortunately, it’s not the livestock out there in the streets getting harassed and killed by cops. But go on with your vegan self.

Speaking of cops, if RZA hadn’t become a rapper, he says he would have been a cop.

“Look, I wanted to be in law enforcement as a kid,” he said. “You wanted to be these guys, you know what I mean?”

But the image of police has changed, he continued. “In the old days, a cop, you’d let him in your house and give him a cookie and milk. Now you’re like ... yo, yo yo, yo.”

RZA went on to emphasize that “all lives matter” and gave props to the police.

“I love what the police do for our society; I love the idea of it, to serve and protect. Those who are upholding that idea, then they are beneficial to society. But those who lose that focus, whether they lose it through fear, through stress, or through not being properly trained—and they are allowed to go out on the streets—how can you enforce law if you don’t understand law?” he said.

But he also pointed the finger at the image some black people project, and seemed to say that if you wore nicer clothes, you wouldn’t have certain issues. This coming from a man who rocked hoodies and Wallabees for the majority of his life.

“When you think about some of the brothers who are being brutalized by the police, you also got to have them take a look, and us take a look, in the mirror, at the image we portray. If I’m a cop and every time I see a young black youth—whether I watch them on TV, movies, or just see them hanging out—and they’re not looking properly dressed, properly refined, you know, carrying himself, conducting himself proper hours of the day—things that a man does—you’re going to have a certain fear and stereotype of them,” he espoused.

“I tell my sons, I say, if you’re going somewhere, you don’t have to wear a hoodie—we live in New York, so a hoodie and all that is all good. But sometimes, you know, button up your shirt. Clean up. Look like a young man. You’re not a little kid, you know what I mean? I think that’s another big issue we gotta pay attention to. Is the image that we portray that could invoke a fear into a white officer, or any officer?” he continued.

But when will people realize it’s not their attire that’s supposed to make the police feel safe around them?

A cop doesn’t care if you’re in a three-piece tailored suit or a hoodie. Respectability politics won’t keep you from getting racially profiled. Just ask former tennis star James Blake, who was dressed “properly” when he was wrongly profiled and manhandled in New York City by a group of cops.

How is it that RZA’s BFF, Quentin Tarantino, has a better understanding of police brutality and the misuse of justice than he does?

Yet another un-appreciative bum who doesn't respect the people who support him.
We, as Black Americans, must do a better job of screening the people to whom we give our hard-earned money and support. We must develop ways of determining whether the likes of Tyler Perry, Ramon Simone, Steve Harvey, Barack Obama, etc... have our best-interests in mind, or are just pandering for our support/dollars.

3rd to the last time I was stopped & frisked I had a fitted suit, tie & dress shoes. I was on my way to work at the Jacob Javitz Center during Fashion Week & was accosted by 5 undercovers at Penn Station because I "fit the description" of some thief... allegedly.
I wonder if he still sells boots, jeans & hoodies while taking a dump on those who've supported him by buying said boots, jeans & hoodies.
I repeat: boots, jeans & hoodies.
fu*k you very much RZA.
fu*k you

He is right. If Black men ceased sagging with that so-called swag, they would command much more respect and incur less suspicion. I am tired of seeing the underwear and the naked cracks of men's butts. It is fine to see your husband's butt in the bedroom but not in public.

@Jrc Nipkiri You do realize that it's not just those with sagging pants who get racially profiled, correct? Black men and women who are professionally dressed are also harassed by the police. Therefore, it is not the attire that needs to be addressed as you are suggesting.

He has just destroyed his legacy!! That's all I have to say..It is established that the KKK has infiltrated the entire police force in the country. Yes we need cops but we need train cops and the police force should be made up of more people of different races...

So, What you're saying is dress better and don't wear the "target on your back" Wu-Tang clothes that you used to peddle to put them in harms way. Got it.

This the same dude that's spoke in the past about knowledge of self and this is his response?

Dress better so police won't kill you.... NIIIIIIGGGGA, PLS SITCHO ASS DOWN

Couple things:

We can go through the Wu's various press runs, albums, videos, and lyrics to find them contributing to a lot of this with their content if we really want to go in. Using RZA's logic the Wu has contributed to black men and women getting killed as lot of the fashion he mentions were started in the 90's. Hoodies, Timbs, Jorts all that shit is a product of RZA's era. The de facto dress code of that era that now gets niggas killed comes from a time that RZA contributed to.

What really gets me is RZA is taking up for the murderers. I've never been this disappointed in a hip-hop legend before.

I mean I guess that *is* basically hippie shit but I just think he would've answered differently (and better) 10-15 years ago.

But yea - if we're ranking them in terms of stupidity Rza's commentary is far, far worse, I agree.

You haven't said one thing outside of broad "RZA is ignorant" sentiments which is very telling.

In response to Reply # 0

http://www.theroot.com/blogs/the_grapevine/2016/01/rza_attempts_to_clarify_recent_comments_about_black_people_and_police_brutality.html

Many fans of the RZA yelled a resounding “Et tu, RZA?” last week when the Wu-Tang Clan founder spoke about police brutality and how black people should dress better in order to prevent them from being profiled and brutalized by cops.

“When you think about some of the brothers who are being brutalized by the police, you also got to have them take a look, and us take a look, in the mirror at the image we portray,” RZA stated during his Bloomberg interview. “If I’m a cop, and every time I see a young black youth, whether I watch them on TV, movies, or just see them hanging out, and they’re not looking properly dressed, properly refined, you know, carrying himself, conducting himself proper hours of the day—things that a man does, you’re going to have a certain fear and stereotype of them.”

Yeah, tell that to James Blake and every other black person who was “properly” dressed when they were brutalized by police officers.

The backlash RZA felt was swift and deserved. Over the weekend, the rapper attempted to further clarify those statements and his take that “all lives matter.”

Interestingly enough, some felt that RZA might have been attempting to appease the cops because a homicide case to which he is alleged to be connected could be reopened. Others felt that he was just another gentrified rapper who has hung out with the likes of Russell Crowe and Quentin Tarantino too long, and has forgotten where he comes from.

Either way, what RZA fails to understand is that without his famous white friends walking with him down the streets of New York City, whether or not he’s wearing a button-up shirt, the only thing that makes him a target is his blackness. The police wouldn’t give a crap about his kung fu movies or rap music.

"Add a button up to your wardrobe"

How sad that he's so intentionally ignorant.

You know what being an adult is? Wearing whatever the fuck you please. That's part of being an adult. And so long as you're not bothering or hurting anyone else you should have no expectation of being beat the fuck down by "authority figures" because you chose to wear your hooded sweatshirt that day.

Fuck Rza, man. This is so disappointing.

>Fuck Rza, man. This is so disappointing.

You wear "whatever the fuck you want" to your next job interview and when they question you, tell them you're an adult and then let me know how that turns out for you. Oh wait...you would never do that because you understand time and place and the perception you're projecting in situations.

We need to stop over-exagerrating issues and acting as if we need to be on the complete other side of the spectrum in attempt to prove "we relate" to the side that fits our agenda. What you said is just as fucking dumb as what you're claiming RZA said.

Did you wear "whatever the fuck you wanted" to your wedding? No, you wore a fucking tux like society and tradition has taught you.

I don't see where RZA is condoning police brutality. I also don't agree that dressing a certain way protects you from racist cops or people because it simply won't.

But if you think stereotypes don't exist then you're a complete fucking idiot. And if you think ANY man in a suit is looked at the same way as ANY man in baggy ass jeans and hoody then you're ignorant.

If you step back and breathe for a second and put everything into perspective, it's very easy to see where RZA is coming from. Common sense is all you need. RZA is a 40+ year old black man who has worn both "baggy jeans, timbs, and hoody" as well as a "button up and or suit". Are you really going to sit here as a white male and tell me you're disappointed in his reality and understanding from actually dressing both ways? I'm pretty sure he has a better first-hand understanding of how people react to both situations than you do.

And racism is very real. Professional black men deal with racism as well regardless of how nicely they are dressed. But if you think they're in the same position as a young men dressed the same way the TV stereotypes them to dress as a "thug" then you need to experience some more diverse life situations. To tell and a young person to "dress however the fuck you want" and to act as if that makes you an adult is extremely misguided and adding to the issue.

Would you tell a young lady to "dress like a prostitute" because that's what adults do? If you have a daughter, are you going to allow here to walk around half naked when she's 18 because shit, "she's an adult"?

Get the fuck out of here with the dumb shit. This is not about just getting "beat the fuck down by cops". it's deeper than that. Police violence is a real and serious issue, but don't let that cloud your vision and give poor advice because that won't help anything.

In response to Reply # 40

I'm a little unsure as to why people have a hard time using their brain to view issues in full as opposed to instantly defending one aspect of the discussion.

No one is saying that racism doesn't exist and no one is saying that dressing better guarantees you anything.

What people are saying is that there is a difference in ways you are perceived directly related to how you dress and carry yourself and you're ignorant if you think otherwise.

I have close friends who are in very high positions in their career. Do you think they got there by dressing however the fuck they wanted and not conforming to some degree? Do you think they are able to afford a comfortable lifestyle without that career?

At the same time, and please don't ignore this part of my point because people love to read whatever they want, those same people had to deal with racism within that same job and outside of work regardless of how they were dressed stemming from certain people. They weren't beat down by the cops but racism comes in many forms.

With that said, what route is better to take and what is better to teach young men? To do whatever the fuck they want because regardless they will face racism? Or to take advantage of situations and do what they need to to get as far ahead as possible keeping in mind they will have to deal with racism.

Success is the best revenge. It doesn't fix everything but it's damn sure better of trying to do whatever the fuck you want and getting absolutely nowhere.

I mean he said alot of nonsense but there is no getting around that presenting yourself a certain way decreases the likelihood of being on the receiving end of police harrasment. Doesn't gaurantee it won't happen and won't prevent it in all scenarios, but it certainly decreases it.

That's an objective fact based statement, that is true regardless of whether we thing that should be the case or not.

The advice he gives his son is the advice that black parents been giving there children for decades. Most of yall know yall heard it and most of yall will give it to your own children.

In response to Reply # 46

I can actually give multiple concrete examples of it.
White folks might treat all WHITE folks with respect regardless of
how they're dressed, but that is not true of their treatment of Black folks.
That is a problem, and it's definitely wrong...
but like he said, we've known that for a long time.
Does that mean we refuse to comply and face racism at every turn?
Do we tell our children to wear whatever they want and worry about
them while they're out? Or do we do all we can in an effort to protect
them even if that includes telling them to dress differently?
It's really not an easy answer.
You don't wanna give in, but you don't wanna feel like you could've
saved your dead child either.

Provide examples of times where you avoided police harassment based solely on you wearing more formal/less casual clothing. And then provide examples of times when you were harassed by police bc you were dressed casually. Since your experience proves the point objectively any of us should be able to see the point. It should be plain.

*edit* some examples tho

At the DMV a couple of weeks ago. Young Black dude in front of me
has on a black hoodie, hand scratching his head, look non-chalant.
That means nothing to me, but I ain't white folks. I got on a
polo, khakis (dressed for work). Older white male state worker
(looks like a retired police officer), speaks to me politely, but
speaks to the other dude aggressively (this also has to do with
other dude's attitude, because he's acting like he doesn't even wanna
be dealing with anyone, even though he's there for a license to carry).
The treatment wasn't warranted, but attitude and manner of dress
equaled him getting somewhat accosted and told he needs to say "sir".

At a convenient store by the house that I frequent, I usually go in
there right before or after work and get respectful treatment.
This time, I wake up and go in my pajamas (some sweats), my coat and
toboggan hat.
Lady gives me the worst attitude... only thing different about me was
the way I was dressed.

One time a long time ago, walked out the house to go to the store.
Group of guys is running from the police. I happen to have on shorts,
hair not even combed, cuz I'm just walked across the street to the
damn store.
Police pull me over and ask me if I'm with them... I say nah I'm
just walked out the house and am headed to the store. They don't
believe me cuz I'm black and dressed like these kids who are
obviously younger than I am (but I have always looked young for my
age).

now, I don't wear suits or button ups but these kids out here in Charlotte are sagging so hard it's comical. Dudes walking while holding their pants with both hands looking so fucking defeated it's depressing.

ionno.. but this whole "dress how ever you want" is not the move when it comes to our youth.

not saying it will stop racism and harrassment but I dont think it's black and white.

People love to jump on sides and call someone a sell out or whatever when they're trying to improve situations.

I don't even like RZA like that and he has said his fair share of questionable shit including the song linked in this post.

But his point is correct. You have to be cautious of how you present yourself. Everyone does. It's how the world works regardless if we agree.

And the thing is, when people decide to dress a certain way, they know exactly what image they are trying to project. Back in the day when we rocked baggy clothes and timbs we wanted to look "hard" and project the image of "don't fuck with me"

When you get older you realize you can't do that if you want to get ahead in life.

Just how it works.

It also seems to be the experience of most black professional cats I know.

To be fair there is an age range when this is less true (roughly 16-25) but as an adult it's more true.

But you never had the experience that once cops figure out that you are not some kid from the hood that doesn't know their rights, they ease up on you?

Listen I am not on some Lawrence Otis Graham (see article below),
but how you present absolutely affects how cop approach you in most scenarios.

It also wasn't the experience of the brother I just represented in a bond hearing or the young lady I just represented. The brother is not hood and has a politically connected family - he's sitting in jail today. The sister is a college student. Not hood. In jail.

It's not about dressing white so I don't know why dressing like a skater bum would help. It's about making the cops aware that you aren't a person they can easily fuck with.

No way dressing a sort of way makes you bullet proof, and won't protect you from the loco asshole cop, but as a person who has gotten into many confrontations with cops, it definitely makes a difference.

while dressing differently sometimes does save us.
Of course it shouldn't be like that, and we shouldn't accept it.
But sending your kids out to get slaughtered in baggy jeans and a hoodie
ain't the way to fight it.

People who take the extreme road in fighting respectability politics
seem to think we're saying that we should just forever accept that
white folks treat us differently. Nah, never... just protect yourselves
and your children while the fight is fought... if you plan on fighting.
I mean, if yall find a place where white supremacy ain't taken over
that we can go, let me know. Other than that, the previous statement stands.

By no means is ANY white man subjected to the treatment of minorities in this country.

But there is definitely assumptions and various reactions based on how ANY person dresses.

You think if a teenage white kid dressed like a homeless skateboarder is around some country club white folks they're not judging him?

They're probably not threatened by him but they're definitely judging him and treating him differently.

People are solely focusing this conversation about police brutality because that is the context in which RZA made his statement. And if you take the discussion at face value, sure...you can say that racist police and racist people will be racist regardless of how you dress. That is true.

But if you widen the discussion and intelligently break down the topic, you get to the issue of "how you dress does directly impact how your are viewed".

There 0 argument against that. And it's best for people to understand that to place themselves in the best situation and capitalize on opportunities. It's as simple as that. This goes beyond just police brutality.

We actually have a grown man in here saying that part of being an adult is dressing however the fuck you want".

Do you know how fucking dumb that statement is?

not to argue with.

The level of respect that white folks receive from law enforcement
based on their manner of dress is pretty normal in terms of normal
human judgment. To fight against the treatment white folks get
based on appearance, you start with fighting human judgment.
To fight the way Black folks are treated, you start with racism.
Plain and simple.

We all see that it isn't cut and dry, but yall get way better treatment
than we do in America, and there's no denying that.

That must be frustrating.

My internal struggle here is that if I told you about your tell(s) you'd stop doing it and providing me and everyone so much unintentional entertainment. So I'm good. I'll let you be you. And thank you for that, for being you.

You think I give a fuck about you? Take this place serious? You're on here posting about you drug and health issues. Go get some real help and get your life together. No on here gives a fuck about you man. This is a place for topics to be discussed. Not for you to find pity and friends. Lol @ me taking this shit serious. I have a real life with real life friends and family and real life issues that I take serious. I don't take shit on this site serious.

This is a place to get away and have discussions. Problem is, people aren't here for discussion. There here to be ignorant. That's the new cool. People like you.

and your attempt to play the white card is just proof of your brain capacity.

The key word is "threatened," and it makes a huge difference in how people treat each other. A well-dressed black man is still viewed as a threat to many. Everyone gets judged by their appearance, but it just *feels* much more polarized as a black person.

There's many layers to this shit and the reason I even posted was because people were trying to minimize the issue and it iritates me when that happens.

The train of thought goes: "dressing professionally doesn't stop police brutality so dress however the fuck you want" and I find that incredible ignorant.

Yes, dressing professionally doesn't stop police brutality but we definitely can't push the message of dress however the fuck you want.

i'm a service employee and i'm hired to represent and advocate for ppl who are criminally charged. their cases are not about me. if i waste time picking fights w/judges and other lawyers and possibly my clients about what i wear then i'm doing my clients a disservice. so i don't bother w/that and i tend to acquiesce on the point and dress traditionally. some lawyers choose otherwise and tend to dress non-traditionally.

If Im dressed as stereotypical blood member #4 in a hood movie and my twin is dressed as investment banker, obviously I am going to get the nightstick to head first.

The problem with police brutality is investment banker reggie is still going to get a nightstick to the head first when there's Sons of Anarchy Extra #2 or white rapper #3.

Once we start going down that path, it just supports the cops story that they are just looking for people that look 'suspicious'.

Are folks really telling their kids their appearance don't matter and that people will see the inner them and treat them accordingly?

to prevent police harassment. as i've told my little cousins, mentees, clients and neighbors, i would tell my kid to dress appropriately for certain situations (at church, at work, at school, at trial, among others) but i wouldn't tell them to dress in any particular manner to avoid police harassment.

of course, i would advise them to behave in certain ways to minimize the likelihood the police will mistreat them. i'd also tell them some police will act badly w/o regard for how the kid acts or dresses and that they shouldn't allow those bad cops to limit their choices too much considering the fact the kid has a bad-ass motherfucking lawyer as a father who is more than prepared to defend the kid in court (or elsewhere) against any bad cop or any criminal charge resulting from a bad cop's misconduct.

That was part of the point of well-dressed/well-behaved ppl placing themselves in situations where they would likely be arrested for conduct that shouldn't have been criminal. They knew that they needed 'perfect' victims bc too many ppl believe the lie you've swallowed.

they were exposing the lie you and RZA believe - that dressing up can save us from police harassment. also they understood that in order to win public support for their effort they needed to present 'perfect victims' b/c too many members of the public think the way YOU think. too many members of the public tend to place blame on victims of police misconduct for ___, ___, or ___ instead of focusing on the police and their misconduct. CRM leaders and the NOI tend to have their ppl dress up and all that jazz in an attempt to focus attention on the right things b/c they understand too many ppl like you will focus on the wrong things otherwise. it mostly worked.

You continue to try to mischaracterize folks points which really doesn't work when folks exact points and clarifications are in this very post. SMH.

Anyway, I get your point now. It depends on who is making the point whether they are exposing the lie or buying into the concept of respectability politics.

Sooo when you dress up to represent your clients are you exposing the lie that black men are criminals or are you buying into the notion that lawyers need to look a certain way?

the CRM was about doing both - exposing the lie and understanding that too many ppl like you buy into the respectability politics bullshit and they needed ppl like you to buy into the CRM so they understood their audience and catered public presentation to persuade ppl like you. they picked their battles, in other words.

Of People buying into respectability politics versus people playing along with respectability politics because they know everyone else buys into it.

Fact is you have no evidence that Nation of Islam or MLK and other civil rights leaders would much rather be dressed some other sort of way rather than well dressed but were doing so to game or satisfy the system.

Everything I have ever heard about both organizations tells me they saw an inherent value in presenting themselves a certain way.

For example, here is what I found on the subject from a 5 minute search. Does that sound like folks just doing it because they buy into respectability politics or are they doing it because they don't believe in the value dressing a certain way but do it to because the system requires it??

"We must strive to look clean, neat, well-pressed and well-tailored each and every day. Not just for special occasions. For when we appear in public, they (the public) do not look at us merely as individuals but rather, they see us as representatives of The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam. You will hear them say daily, "there's one of them Muslim sisters, you know the Muhammad followers." As Muslim sisters, we must give a good impression of Islam and our leader and teacher, whenever we leave our home."

By Touré August 22, 2014

Touré, a co-host of “The Cycle” on MSNBC, is the author of “Who’s Afraid of Post-Blackness?: What It Means to Be Black Now.”

An information war is being waged in Ferguson, Mo., each salvo meant to shape public perceptions of Michael Brown and Darren Wilson.

Through this war we’ve learned that the 18-year-old Brown had marijuana in his system when he was killed, suggesting he was of poor character, and that police officer Wilson shot Brown six times, a use of force that could seem reckless or excessive. We’ve been told that Brown was a “gentle giant” who would have started attending classes at a technical college this month, but we’ve also seen a grainy convenience-store video in which he does not look gentle. We have seen a video of Wilson receiving an award, looking professional and happy, but we’ve also heard about him cursing at a Ferguson woman who had been maced, weeks before the town began to smolder.

Such snippets and images are efforts to shape public opinion about these men. They could influence St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch as he weighs whether to bring charges against Wilson. They could also influence the potential jury pool, showing prejudicial evidence that may not be admissible at trial.

In an information war, the news media is deployed as a weapon, our collective mind becomes a battlefield, and biases are land mines waiting to explode.

I feel confident stating that neither Brown nor Wilson is an angel — because no one is. But that doesn’t matter, because the two men have been reduced to symbols. Information wars suggest that character is destiny and that character is knowable, as if a handful of snapshots or tweets constitute an autopsy of the soul. They are waged in all kinds of legal battles, from civil suits to contract negotiations to public divorces.

But when there’s a black victim involved, the information takes a different and predictable turn: The victim becomes thuggified. This is an easy leap for many minds, given the widespread expectation of black criminality. If you become nervous when you see a young black male approaching on the street, it is not hard to convince you that a kid who was shot was not one of the “good ones,” that he was scary and maybe did something to deserve it. Information wars thrive on America’s empathy gap — the way some people struggle to see any kinship or shared humanity with strangers who don’t look like them.

So after 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was killed in Sanford, Fla., on Feb. 26, 2012, people were told that he had been suspended from school, that he had written graffiti, that he had smoked marijuana. As a result, many saw him as a thug — even though many non-thugs have been suspended from school or gotten high, and those are not violent acts. More important, none of that sheds any light on what happened the night George Zimmerman shot him.

In 2009, after 22-year-old Oscar Grant was fatally shot by a police officer named Johannes Mehserle while he was restrained at a BART station in Oakland, Calif., we learned that, three years earlier, Grant ran from officers after a traffic stop. Similarly, in 1991, after Rodney King was beaten by several Los Angeles police officers, we came to know that 63 days earlier, he was paroled after a robbery conviction.

Did such facts justify Grant’s death or King’s pain? Of course not. But they subtly signal that these guys aren’t good guys. It’s as if a black person must be a perfect victim to escape being thuggified, an angel with an unblemished history in order to warrant justice. The burden of the perfect victim suggests that only impeccable résumés may qualify for protection under the law and the support of the community.

We all remember Rosa Parks and how she earned sainthood status within America’s civil rights mythology: On Dec. 1, 1955, Parks refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Ala., and became an icon. But Parks was not the first to defy the rules. Nine months earlier, 15-year-old Claudette Colvin refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus. In an interview last year with Democracy Now, Colvin said that when the cops arrived and ordered her to get up, “it felt like Sojourner Truth’s hands were pushing me down on one shoulder and Harriet Tubman’s hands were pushing me down on another shoulder, and I could not move.”

So they pulled her up and jailed her. Colvin sued and became one of the five plaintiffs in Browder v. Gayle, a desegregation case that would reach the Supreme Court. In November 1956, the court ordered the end of bus segregation in Alabama. Parks was not involved in that suit.

But Colvin did not become an icon of the civil rights movement. In a March 2009 interview, she told NPR that civil rights leaders at the time thought Parks would be a better symbol for the movement. Parks “was an adult,” Colvin said. “They didn’t think teenagers would be reliable.” She also speculated that Parks had the right look for the part. “Her skin texture was the kind that people associate with the middle class. She fit that profile.” By “texture,” she meant color, politely tapping into deep and painful associations between light-colored skin and acceptability.

Also, shortly after her arrest, Colvin became pregnant. She gave birth the same month as Parks’s historic arrest. It’s clear why the civil rights leaders did not want to coalesce around an unmarried teen mother. She was not a perfect victim. Her life and image could have distracted from the message. I understand that there was a movement to shepherd and that the wrong standard-bearer could have kneecapped it.

But when individuals arrive in the court of public opinion, or in a court of law, the burden of being a perfect victim in order to receive justice is impossibly heavy. It doesn’t allow for human fallibility. Is there any information from your past that could make you look bad? Any photo that, taken out of context, could portray you as someone you don’t recognize?

Most of us have something in our pasts we would not want revealed. And for black Americans, those facts too often are used to suggest that victims of injustice don’t deserve justice, because they weren’t some sort of credit to their race. In a nation where police often approach black communities with a dragnet, stopping and frisking everyone, marking as many black men as possible with a record, it would be hard to find a black male who looks like an angel.

But it doesn’t matter whether Brown was an angel. He was young and growing and human, and he made mistakes. That’s okay. The real question is not: Was Brown a good kid? The real question is: How are police officers supposed to treat citizens? California Attorney General Kamala Harris, a former prosecutor, has put it well: “Our penal code was not created just to protect Snow White.”

Michael Brown was not perfect. But few of us are. And that does not speak to whether we deserve to die.

fuck you.

...as well as respect within the group. An idea that's apparently lost on folks nowadays.

People that dress like slobs look like they aren't doing shit, which is a negative in the black community (shiftlessness). Dressing well makes people feel better, which helps them to do better. The folks in the NOI knew this.

There is an idea that was around from the beginning of the teachings which is "The Nation Of Islam is 100% right and exact." That extends to your dress as well.

dressing up was to present a startling optic of "respectable" folks getting whupped by cops. The 60s folks KNEW the cops were going to beat the ever living sh*t out of them..."Sunday best" and all.

Some people are only concerned with pushing an agenda and others are actually concerns with discussing the actual issue at hand...which has many layers.

But of course snarky remarks and linking memes is a wonderful way to mask the fact people don't have shit to say.

...anyway. i said yesterday that folks got dressed up for BCRM demonstrations IN PART b/c they wanted to expose the fact that Blacks got mistreated even when they were dressed well and otherwise presentable. that's also a reason why the leaders were selective about who they promoted as the various faces of the Movement. like that's why Rosa Parks was the face of the Montgomery Bus Boycott as opposed to Claudette Colvin - Colvin was a dark-skinned pregnant teen and the leaders expected they'd have more trouble rallying folks around Colvin than they would w/Parks (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claudette_Colvin#Bus_incident). my point here is the leaders of the BCRM wanted folks who participated in the various demonstrations to look, be and act a certain way to counter the argument that Blacks were treated as 2nd class citizens for factors unrelated to race. and that's part of why folks dressed as they did.

fuck you.

And like it has been discussed ad nasuem in this post, It was an explicit part of the strategy of the early CRM to dress up while protesting.

His suggestion could be that the movement would be more effective if current protesters adopted the same strategy as the CRM.

I personally think it would be very effective.

Cops look like assholes harassing well dressed disciplined protesters. It was part of the success of the CRM.

But I also allow that the current movement is also about having the right to NOT have to get dressed up to not be harassed by police. It is the evolutionary next step in the CRM in a way.

But you miss all that and dumb it down when your only observation is

>people just don't dress like that anymore
>

It's that simple. Yes dressing a certain way may affect how you are treated in relation to other black people i.e. possibly dodging a situation that will ultimately end up affecting someone else who is black so in the end it is still wrong.

Policing is what needs to change.

Better training, not hiring exclusively from a pool of failed high school athletes with chips on their shoulders and racist mindsets, etc.

I mean these are all generalities of course but the point is, of course, that blaming the victims is defeatist and ignorant.

In your opinion, is there always only one option to improve conditions?

also, while training and higher police accountability is a must, it's not going to solve the racism either.

There are so many layers to this issue as well as the various side issues that arise that there is no one fix.

The issue with the headline is that is basically spins the conversation into; "RZA says dress better and police won't harass you".

That's not really what he said, nor do I believe it was his point. But you then in turn get all of the people who only read headlines and then jump to conclusions turning it into something it's not.

I'm pretty sure RZA would agree that law enforcement need to be better trained. But he can think that and also think that the way a person dresses projects a specific image.

It is possible to understand both these issues in isolation and see how they connect.
