"Recommend a Good DJ Controller for Me, folks....."
Mon Jan-11-16 01:53 PM by WarriorPoet415

I have no real interest in becoming a real DJ. Although I did dj a bit in college and had my own radio show....

Anyways...I just want something where I can take my itunes and Amazon mp3's and make mixes for extended drives, hikes, workouts etc. Something simple that will work with a mid-level HP laptop.

I saw this and like it, but the reviews said it might not be intuitive for beginners: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZFF1wCIgTU

I'm thinking something simplified but similar for hopefully under $350 is out there.

Any suggestions? Will I have to buy some DJ'ing software seperately?

http://www.akaipro.com/product/amx

it comes with serato dj which is honestly getting pretty bomb right now. i don't think it comes w/ the expansion stuff but you really don't need it unless you're planning to get crazy creative

and it doubles as a mixer if you did want to connect it to some turntables or cdjs or something

the knobs double as cue buttons too but you could by this additional piece for a whole controller setup

https://store.djtechtools.com/products/akai-afx

the one thing i've heard is that it's not reliable as gigging hardware but i know folks who use it and haven't had any disasters (though the shit has gotten buggy/crashed)

software is important

and you don't want to rely on midi mapping to use an app that doesn't directly support the hardware you use because midi doesn't always map properly/as expected

i have no idea what that software is like. it may work fine for what you want to do but software like that probably won't last or be supported for long. less likely for there to be real support too if you're having an issue

Like I just wanna mix songs together to make mixes, and maybe loop the favorite parts of songs I like together to make extended mixes of one song.

Maybe i'd use a few more features to be creative, but that's all I really want to do. I'm not playing anyone's parties or at a bar. Strictly personal tomfoolery.

which is why i suggested the option i did b/c you can record without needing anything extra

if you use a serato dj compatible controller you shouldn't have an issue recording but i doubt whatever intro version that's being offered will allow you to record without coming off $ for a full version

your laptop may also dictate if you can record too. i used that AMX once w/ my mac, one that no longer has an input line through the headphone jack, and i was able to record with no issue and recall my loops using the knobs. i seriously want that thing lol

Not trying to do much else?

Get a Hercules RMX. Comes with Virtual DJ. Built in soundcard (you can hook it up to your stereo), built like a frigging tank and should be pretty cheap now.

I actually use traktor for all my mixes on soundcloud. You do need a separate sound card if you want to crossfade properly.

Ableton doesn't need a 2nd sound card and it seems to work well. I never personally used it but a lot of dj friends swear by it.
