"okreaders: a) 8 Books everyone should read, by Neil deGrasse Tyson"

see below, i thought this was a nice list.

b) wanted to know what your reading goals are this year
e.g how many books are you hoping to read by end of
and also, whats on your reading list - doesnt have to be current
just books you want to finally get to

this year, i want to read all the man booker prize shortlisted books for 2013-2015 (and hopefully 2016 when the list comes out)
the books ive read from the list have never disappointed
brief history of 7 killings, bone clocks (d. mitchell)
The Narrow Road to the Deep North (flanaggan)
finkler question, room, parrot and olivier in america, wolf hall, sense of an ending, midnights children, half blood blues etc.
so why not. here's the list: http://themanbookerprize.com/sites/manbooker/files/file-uploads/ManBooker2015Booklet.pdf

Here's Neil deGrasse Tyson's list

https://www.brainpickings.org/2014/12/29/neil-degrasse-tyson-reading-list/?utm_content=buffer756e3&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer

The Bible (public library; free ebook), to learn that it’s easier to be told by others what to think and believe than it is to think for yourself

The System of the World (public library; free ebook) by Isaac Newton, to learn that the universe is a knowable place

On the Origin of Species (public library; free ebook) by Charles Darwin, to learn of our kinship with all other life on Earth

Gulliver’s Travels (public library; free ebook) by Jonathan Swift, to learn, among other satirical lessons, that most of the time humans are Yahoos

The Age of Reason (public library; free ebook) by Thomas Paine, to learn how the power of rational thought is the primary source of freedom in the world

The Wealth of Nations (public library; free ebook) by Adam Smith, to learn that capitalism is an economy of greed, a force of nature unto itself

The Art of War (public library; free ebook) by Sun Tzu, to learn that the act of killing fellow humans can be raised to an art

The Prince (public library; free ebook) by Machiavelli, to learn that people not in power will do all they can to acquire it, and people in power will do all they can to keep it

my list is well over a hundred deep

recently (as in the past months), I've finished The Toughest Indian in the World by Sherman Alexie. it's a collection of 9 short stories, three of which are as perfect as the short story form can get. I recommend anyone read anything by Alexie

and I also read Rankine's Citizen, which is INCREDIBLE. in terms of form, aesthetics, and content it's a work of brilliance. I prefer it over Between the World & Me, which I thought def deserved its hype.

I'm currently reading Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. it's dope as hell so far.

after that prob White Tiger by Adiga, maybe some Atwood, and a collection of essays/lectures by Foucault titled Society Must Be Defended

just know Citizen is classified as poetry, which I don't know if you read. BUT it's more than a book of poetry. For instance there is a brilliant essay about Serena in Citizen.

my friend was just telling me about that series, I've only read The Handmaid's Tale, which is in my personal canon. I got The Blind Assassin, so that's the one I'm'a read

I just read about specific matters within those subjects but for the most part your college education is supposed to give you the bases on what's covered in those books.

For example, my college education already covered evolution thus I don't need to read "On the Origin of Species". I just read articles or journals about the evolution of a specific species.

But then you have folks graduation from college after snoring through their science classes.

WHAT'S GOOD *****? What's REALLY good?!?!????!!! Ha HA!

I work in a research lab & I lose interest if I'm reading journal articles about topics that I'm already well-versed in unless they are pretty specific.

I'd say most PhD economists haven't even read The Wealth of Nations because there are much better treatments of the subject (and they aren't 1000 pages long).

I doubt physicists are studying Issac Newton's old work because they have been updated and improved upon. Same with Darwin.

I get why he chose these particular books. It's because they are well known books and well known authors. But if you were recommending a good book on the topics covered here, these probably aren't the best choices.

But they are his recos, not mine

These are what my AP English teacher would call seminal books

The ideas in these books flow down through time influencing history and literature alike.

I think the recommendations exists as they do to provide a framework for comprehension of the books you would replace them with.

Who has the time?

It's too dense and philosophical to get anything out of it. I get that it's historical and all, but you'd be much better off reading modern treatments of economics if you want to learn about capitalism.

I haven't read them, but I assume the same would be true for Darwin and Newton

The Merlin one is a great read for kids.

I had a record reading year n 2015. I started out the year all physical, but then back problems carrying around Liu then Stephenson hardcovers made be go back to ebooks. BTW its a crime that every hardbound purchase doesn't come with a free ebook. We really need to pressure the pubs on this.

No goals for 2016 except maybe reading more short stories. I don't even have that many anticipated releases going into this year. So may be a revisit type of year.

And several articles have come out in the last 2-3 years on this topic which has nothing to do with Neil idolizing white people to an obnoxious degree.

Have 3% - 5% Neanderthal DNA with the rest being homosapien. Africans have about 2% or none at all. So scientifically speaking Europeans from the west of the continent and Asians from the east of the same continent are actually a mixed race of human. But we all know race is really about skin color and hair texture.

NDG can make the argument that this is eurocentric world
and thus the books perceived to have shaped how the world looks today
(For better or worse)
are by white authors
and you need to read up on them to understand it
i buy that.

but since this is *not* the case you are making
who are the black authors?

I grew up reading the Bible while I was a pre-teen & I used to laugh at some of the "stories" so I don't know how an educated adults can take it seriously. But then kids (especially boys) are more likely to question authority & be inquisitive than most adults.

Some folks have been conditioned by nature/nurture to turn a blind eye so you aren't going to change their behavior by making them read words.

-Muphuckin' Ben Carson is a neurosurgeon & doesn't believe in evolution.
-The head of the NIH is a bible totting christian.
-Kobe read "The Art of War" but ended up in the most infamous power struggle in NBA history.

Just like Mike Tyson said: "Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth."

I work in basic science research & most books about science that I've run into are about astrophysics or a memoir about someone who worked in the medical field.

The "Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" is the most recent book that I know of being relevant to basic research.

EDIT: If you just want to nerd out then I would recommend the "Science Friday" podcast or the Scientific America website.

That is my plan for 2016 and I don't know where to start. It's daunting. It seems like a crap shoot since you aren't really targeting a particular subject of interest like non-fiction.

Do you just go off recommendations? Do you stay with particular authors?

In response to Reply # 38

I love stories, that's why I read fiction, and I'm also a writer, which is why I read fiction

I also feel there is this unspoken reality that "men" read history, theory, non-fic, while fiction is for the wimmins, but yeah...

anyways...

but depends on your interest in general. think of movies or tv shows you like/love, there is a fiction writer doing that or who wrote the books they're based off of.

I love short stories (George Saunders, literary / realist fiction (Toni Morrison), and sci-fi (Octavia Butler). i also don't feel any shame in not indulging the canon/classics though I have read some (Hemingway, Salinger, Faulkner).

and going by Akon's OG post read the novels that win the Pulitzer, Booker, or National Book awards. That's an easy way to compile a list

newish:

The Ecstatic - Victor LaValle (2002)
--your narrator is a schizophrenic who got kicked out of NYU. he goes back home to Queens and shit pops off. Me and a buddy call it the Black Little Miss Sunshine; (it was written five years before that movie). The book is very funny and lots of fun

sci-fi:

Parable of the Sower - Octavia Butler (1993)
--It's LA in the year 2024-26. your narrator is a young woman thinking of a plan to escape her suburb of Robledo as LA goes to shit. It's a giant metaphor for the LA Riots, race and class, desire, and Los Angeles in general

something old:

If He Hollers Let Him Go- Chester Himes (1945)
--he ended up a crime writer, but this is one of his early literary novels. It's basically about being Black in LA in the 1940s. ship yards, sex, psychology, and violence

As far as what I like, you have Malcolm Gladwell too but I've found out some folks don't care for him. The Art of War was already mentioned.

Christopher Hitchens is too philosophical & the millennial generation doesn't have the attention span.

Richard Dawkins isn't really "non-fiction"

But Orwell's work is really for everyone from high-school & up.

its all non-fiction
and really, none of the books from that list have steered me wrong, thus far
although i do think a brief wonderous life of oscar wau should've been on that list

nowadays i tend to first look for authors i have read before
and then i look at lists of books that have won awards
(i know thats pretentious, but there's so many books, often times this is the best way to get introduced to an author
e.g i would never have read emma donohue or david mitchell, for that matter
i also really like latin american authors
so... garcia marquez, mario vargas llosa (feast of the goat is excellent), allende
i need to read more of this genre

In response to Reply # 48

Contrary to popular conception, Hawking is generally considered a genius as a scientist, but not particularly skilled as a writer. It's all subjective, of course, but this is the common view among scientists.

I loved BHT when I read it as a kid, but in retrospect I didn't learn much from it. Like most people, I was more taken with the showmanship.

Better recommendations would include Einstein's Dreams by Alan Lightman (this was hugely influential to me), which is really just a novel and doesn't even pretend to be technical. Also, Kip Thorne's first general audience book, Black Holes and Time Warps, does much of what A Brief History of Time aspires to do, but much better (though I always have to apologize for the terrible title).

I read it too young and found it boring... rediscovered it a couple of years ago and it's so ON POINT.

Origin of Species is frustrating these days though. It's a great and important text, but we are better at explaining a lot of those ideas today.

The Bible, depending on which version you choose, is brill even if you don't believe the fairy stories word for word. It's a cliche, but the King James Bible is one of the best works in the English language.

In response to Reply # 0

most of those books are unnecessarily complex and long because apparently in the past, people thought that the bigger and more words you use to prove a point, the smarter you sound. I have read half of this list and honestly, I thought many of them were boring. I find that this list is somewhat pretentious...but his list is for "intelligent" people, not the average person.
I can't help but wonder what his list would look like if it was a list for the average person...how could he engage the average person on these ideals he presented.

Either way, his list matters less to me. I don't plan on reading any additional books off his list because I do believe it's pointless.

However, my goal is 30 books. I'm reading two right now. I have two I want to start soon...but those are research books. I need time alone to devote to those books.

2015, I read 116 books for a total of 38,759 pages.

https://www.goodreads.com/user/year_in_books/2015/33249234

2016 goals:

Moby Dick, Melville (561 pp)
Bleak House, Dickens (880 pp)
Rising Up and Rising Down (7 volume edition), Vollmann (3,298 pp)
The Man Without Qualities, Musil (1,774 pp)
The Recognitions, Gaddis (976 pp)
The Dying Grass, Vollmann (1,356 pp)
A Suitable Boy, Seth (1,474 pp)
2666, Bolano (898 pp)

That's 11,217 pages, or about 30 percent of what I read in 2015.

-Almanac of the Dead - Silko
-Infinite Jest - DFW
-5th Season - NK Jemisin

check Nova and Babel-17. space opera sci-fi from the mid 60s full of brown people in space. fucn cool.

I've also read The Tides of Lust by him, but I don't recommend if you don't read erotic / pornographic fiction. I mean that shit is WILD. that's all I'll say. it was an experience.

just next level

I agree most with the following excerpt from a review:

Adam Kirsch in Slate:

"2666 is an epic of whispers and details, full of buried structures and intuitions that seem too evanescent, or too terrible, to put into words. It demands from the reader a kind of abject submission—to its willful strangeness, its insistent grimness, even its occasional tedium—that only the greatest books dare to ask for or deserve."
