While they blame it on EDM on some we 'muricans have bad jingoistic tastes (which we do) its just the rise of electronic production and trap in general that has put grime back on the map.
When grime first hit the scene US rap producers could still somewhat afford sampling. Stripped down bass heavy production was rare outside of your neptunes and your timbos. That said, down south the've been on slow rumbling sinister beats for a minute; it just didn't break through yet. I remember reading Dizzy praise UGK when he first came out practically begging them for collaborations.
Now that US production has caught up to what they were doing a decade ago because of easy/cheap electronic production it makes sense now. But I don't see it as a natural extention of mainstream white peopl's love of EDM like the white girl in the article says as opposed to the rap world finally embracing southern hip-hop sample free production.

I liked when rappers used to rhyme on Jungle, cats like Cockni O'Dire. Shit was pretty big in LA, they even had a store called Ragga in LA (for Ragga Jungle)
And I remember dudes telling me Dizzee Raskal and all that grime from back then was gonna be the next big thing.
This quote was good:

Those 3 genres are dope even though by most accounts they are "dead" I love how uk funky is so Caribbean influenced and has more Afrobeat rhythms 2 step and garage are more like Craig David "can you fill me in" I'm sur they all kinda blend into the each other after awhile because I've heard Some mixes that have grime in them
But they're all uptempo This is my fav uk funky mix its gotten through a lot of road trips
firstly this beat is ridiculous. secondly there is boundless verve and massive weight behind stormzy's delivery on this song. it's kind of incredible. this version blows ghetts' original version out of the water imo
also this post has made me realize that "man" is probably my favorite slang term of the past 5 years. i wonder if it will ever make it over here
