"Samples that came from unexpected sources?"
Fri Dec-11-15 03:51 PM by Rjcc

aka the "You Gotta Listen To the WHOLE Song When Diggin'" post.

This post is dedicated to that corny 80's pop song that sourced a banger, or the huge vocal jazz artist who decided to do ONE deep funk song that one time.

My first submissions:

Bucks Fizz - My Camera Never Lies (actual loop for the sample is at 2:21, not the beginning)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fj1XJ0EeNJU

turned into Prodigy's - Click Clack

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQ8RIYm1sOM

i'll be back w/ more.

anybody deep into music enough to even imagine a way to sample anything by Phillip Glass is, IMO, a mad genius.

he was always just a weirdo that made music for other weirdos as far as I was concerned. I never thought to try sampling his material.

I didn't realize it was that crazy of a sample.

Executed perfectly but nothing to go crazy about.

I actually like the way he chopped the keys better.

I told her to guess the sample and she couldnt of course. When I told her she still couldnt get it. I spent like 30 minutes trying to hum it and piece it together for her and she couldnt hear it. That shit is genius.

I've always been a fan, but what made he different is wasn't what he sampled but the fact that he would sample & compose what something different or in a way nobody would've thought of doing; and then make it banging not experimental.

What also got my brain warped was when he sampled Janet Jackson's "Come Give Your Love To Me", a hard pop joint with basically no break or easy to loop parts but he takes guitar stabs and vocals and turns it into another piece. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=He-M8JsNUk4

After those joints, everybody had to up their chopping game or stay lazy cause it was no longer about finding the dopest loop, it was about how you find bits and turn it into a beat.

I don't know why everyone is awe over that sample when Pete Rock sampled it first as an interlude back in 1994 on the song "In The House" https://youtu.be/4QoUrxqoXes?t=4m28s

I will say J-Dilla used more of the sample but to me I always thought it was a loop when Pete first did it, this is the 4th time Jay found and sampled the same tune that Pete did and it ended up on a song, remember Que-D.'s "Rock Box"?

That shit low key blew my mind. If I went through Wynton's track for 5 hours on repeat to find something to chop, I still don't think I coulda caught that and made it into what they did with it. It's ridiculous.

i used to go about 45 seconds before the sample comes in and loop it so folks will be dancing then all of a sudden it's frenetic jazz and the sample comes in and folks go nuts

that's my favorite thing to do. for a second ppl are like 'wtf?!?' then go nuts

is this truly the reason?
what about before when sometimes albums were literally
composed of bits and pieces from other songs?!?!?!
so now is more expensive than before?

or maybe people are lazy to dig in the crates

in the late 80's and early 90's nobody was clearing (paying) for samples. They were just doing it. It all changed in 91 after Biz Markie was sued for sampling Alone Again for his song Alone Again. From then on artists were responsible for getting the okay for all samples used. But artists kept on doing it. They figured if they sampled obscure songs and only cleared the obvious and popular songs they would be fine. But even then it gets dangerous because if you are caught after the fact the price tag is definitely going to cost more than the original clearance fee would have been. Now with the internet it is definitely easier to get caught. Also prices have gone up. Before just some of the bigger names were expensive. I think Barry White was one of the most expensive at one time. But the big names. So find an obscure artist or group and you were good. Not anymore. Everyone is expensive. Record labels dont make money selling records anymore so gotta find other avenues or revenue.

Back inna day you really needed to have an ear for it an patience to chop up your samples right. Nowadays the shit chops it up for you.

If you've ever had to chop up a sample by ear -only- you know how difficult it can be to get it *jusssst right*. I used to have one of these samplers back inna day:

http://gsfanatic.com/aas_hirdetes_temp/pic/392219_roland_js-30.jpg

Getting my samples chopped up just right was hard as hell, but I managed and got pretty good at it but compared to this new shit???

https://media.giphy.com/media/3oEduK2QQN2yabnEd2/giphy.gif

I can sample anything and get it right every time.

As soon as I hear "what do we get for $10???" I knew exactly where that came from.

Even the rest of the song was pretty obvious to anyone that grew up through the funk era of the 70's/early 80's ("Firecracker" by Mass Production).
