A person doesn't have to be my representative for me to find a way to defend their actions.

I'm not a Republican but I might be able to defend a Republican's actions if they're doing the right thing according to my views.

Just IMO though.

Do they represent all of the faith? No, but they do have significant influence over a good number of the faithful, and for them to publicly meet with and possibly endorse any candidate in this manner isn't a good look. IMO, and pastor endorsing a political candidate, or even allowing one to speak from their pulpit at a service, is doing a disservice to the parishioners.

By the way, my godfather was Rev. William H. Gray, former Majority Whip of the house of Representatives. We had a couple of conversations about this and other such topics that I perceived as "conflicts of interest".

or endorsing him...

But if so then sure, I see your point. Well, thats if they only let Trump in and lock out the ither candidates

However, if they are meeting with Trump this week and Clinton 2 weeks from now then its not a problem IMO.

I definitely think politics should stay outside of the pulpit but thats not how it works and while I'm a Dem I think if you let ine side in you need to let the other in as well.

I also dont think these people are all sheep. Thats crazy talk. Some blindly follow others but can be said about people of all faiths or no faith at all.

I'm not saying Trump in particular but candidates in general. But I'm pretty sure that he's not meeting with them to gauge the climate of the ghetto...he wants their endorsement.

Agreed, but in the eyes of many, the pastors is almost pope-like infallible. If they can coax people to give huge amounts of money that they can't afford to the church, they can sway votes "in the name of the lord"

Isn't the same as asking someone if something is consistent with your race IMO.

There are set rules for one that are adhered to as part of one's volition. Race is not the same to me at all on that basis.

Just IMO though.

13 “Go in through the narrow gate,+ because broad is the gate and spacious is the road leading off into destruction, and many are going in through it; 14 whereas narrow is the gate and cramped the road leading off into life, and few are finding it.+ 15 “Be on the watch for the false prophets+ who come to you in sheep’s covering,+ but inside they are ravenous wolves.+ 16 By their fruits you will recognize them. Never do people gather grapes from thorns or figs from thistles, do they?+ 17 Likewise, every good tree produces fine fruit, but every rotten tree produces worthless fruit.+ 18 A good tree cannot bear worthless fruit, nor can a rotten tree produce fine fruit.+ 19 Every tree not producing fine fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.+ 20 Really, then, by their fruits you will recognize those men.+ 21 “Not everyone saying to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the Kingdom of the heavens, but only the one doing the will of my Father who is in the heavens will.+ 22 Many will say to me in that day: ‘Lord, Lord,+ did we not prophesy in your name, and expel demons in your name, and perform many powerful works in your name?’+ 23 And then I will declare to them: ‘I never knew you! Get away from me, you workers of lawlessness!’

You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

This is true, but it is also quite obvious that endorsement is Trump's objective. Also, it isn't beyond many christian pastors (including some listed here) to accept "charitable contributions" in exchange for a good word from the pulpit.

most black Christians probably wouldnt side with Donald Trump (thus my inference that pastors rolling with him leans towards indefensible)

but it's not remotely the same as likening Muslims to terrorists

No.

Asking if someone can defend something as consistent with their faith isn't the same as saying all of a group of people are to be criticised because of a small group self-proclaimed radicals.

Got a friend who's a cop. Sometimes the police do things I don't agree with. I have no issue asking if that's consistent with how he feels police should act or whether it's good policy, and he doesn't take offense as if I'm lumping him in with the rest of them.

Just IMO though.

There is no one reading of Islam or Christianity that makes any action consistent with the faith. In fact, it's the religious extremist who insist that there is only one reading of their religion.

Both religions are based on 1000 year old texts that people can interpret in the mordern context any number of ways.

None of what you said contradicts what I said. I said "their" faith, not "the" faith. A person''s faith is personal, so a person can say whether an act is consistent with it or not, or say they need more information.

Asking a personal question isn't the same as universal condemnation. A point you didn't address.

Just IMO though.

For all I know they just grabbed a bunch of names and tossed them out there. Also, there could have already been a totally non-related clergy leadership even scheduled at Trump Towers and Trump decided to seek an audience. It all looks a bit shady and half-assed. But I don't see the harm in meeting with Trump and even praying for him. We are taught to pray for our enemies and friends. However, I would take a serious issue if anyone in their right mind decided to endorse this joker.

In response to Reply # 0

and most preachers on the list say he is a bold face liar...lol.

This dude Trump is hilarious. What is scary is CNN and other stations throw this endorsement line out there and by the time they follow up, people believe it to be true.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/11/28/black-pastors-to-trump-our-meeting-is-not-an-endorsement.html

Several members of a group of prominent African American ministers scheduled to meet with Donald Trump Monday are making clear that they have made no commitments to endorse the real estate magnate. Their public declarations of non-endorsement come after a press release from the Trump campaign announced a coalition of 100 African American religious leaders will appear with the real estate mogul shortly after the meeting to endorse him.

Bishop Clarence McClendon, a Los Angeles-based minister who was invited to the Monday meeting with clergy, posted to Facebook after the Trump campaign announced the coming endorsements.

“I am not officially endorsing ANY candidate and when I do you will NOT need to hear it from pulpitting courtjesters who suffer from intellectual and spiritual myopia,” he wrote.

Bishop Corletta Vaughn, the Senior Pastor of the Holy Spirit Cathedral of Faith in Detroit, posted a message on Facebook after she said her inbox was “blowing up with inquiries” after her name was included on a list of pastors meeting Trump.

“Let me be clear,” she wrote. “I was invited to attend a gathering of clergy to listen to Mr. Trump on Monday November 30. I respectively (Sic.) declined as I do not support nor will endorse Donald Trump.”

“I was asked 2 meet with Mr Trump too but I refused because until he learns how to respect people you can’t represent me thru my endorsement,” Bishop Paul Morton, a prominent pastor in Atlanta tweeted on Friday.

“The 100 pastors they say are endorsing Donald Trump? I don’t know where those 100 are coming from,” said Rev. Jamal Bryant, a prominent AME pastor based in Baltimore.

The Trump campaign did not respond to questions about which ministers will endorse him on Monday.

In fact, of the pastors scheduled to meet with Trump earlier in the day, so far only one, Pastor Darrell Scott, has said he will attend the press conference to endorse Trump.

In an interview with the Daily Beast on Friday, Scott said that he had organized Monday’s meeting between Trump and black clergy, but that his invitation was for them to meet with Trump, not to endorse him.

This shit is crazy.....At least now the pastors r balking at Trump's blatant hubris....

And there are even some preachers that got together to write a letter to the preachers scheduled to meet with Trump this Monday....I'm glad they r putting it out there....Fuck it. Put 'em on blast.....

---

Excerpt from the clergy Letter from Ebony:

"We write to you as fellow clergy, community organizers, scholars, socially aware Christians, and/or concerned voters who are deeply confounded by your decision to participate in an upcoming telecast meeting with Presidential contender Donald Trump.
Mr. Trump routinely uses overtly divisive and racist language on the campaign trail. Most recently, he admitted his supporters were justified for punching and kicking a Black protester who had attended a Trump rally with the intent to remind the crowd
that “Black Lives Matter.”

Trump followed this action by tweeting inaccurate statistics about crime prevalence rates in Black communities — insinuating that Black people are more violent than other groups. Those statistics did not reflect the fact that most crimes are intraracial, meaning that most people do harm to people of their own race. They also did not speak to the crime of neoliberalism, capitalism, and white supremacy which kill thousands of black and nonblack people each day.

Trump’s racially inaccurate, insensitive and incendiary rhetoric should give those charged with the care of the spirits and souls of Black people great pause. As people of God, you are surely aware of the emotional, spiritual, and physical toll continued structural and state violence takes on Black people. Being continually reminded of reckless police disregard for Black life through the circulation of videos that show them murdering our young people, like 12-year old Tamir Rice, 7-year old Ayanna Stanley Jones, and 17-year old Laquan McDonald are both heartbreaking and stress-inducing.
Moreover as people of God, you know that our theology shapes our politics, and politics are a great indicator of our theology. What theology do you believe Mr. Trump possesses when his politics are so clearly anti-Black?"
