Like their fam is from that area or state but parents moved. I ran into that more often than not.
Example you meet a lady at Bowie St fron Seattle and you are like how the kcuf did you find out about this school? Then she tells you her fam is from VA, a relative or 2 went to the school, pops got out of the military in the Seattle area and her parents decided to stay.
But you do have some folks who wing it with no connection to the state or neighboring states at all.

from Africa as at Howard and Morehouse, but a WHOLE WHOLE lot from the Caribbeans at FAMU. We had a few Blacks from Japan, usually from Military bases.

and the furthest away I can recall is any of the many islands. I clearly remember it snowing and the first year students from Trinidad had never seen snow before. So all of them were super excited but super cold...later I told one of them that Burlington Coat factory was the way to go (there use to be one in the shopping center across from MSU) and they were good. But it was hilarious because while I knew they weren't from the US I had assumed they had been here before but many of them hadn't.

I spent my freshman year at MSU (1996-97) that shopping center used to be my spot. there was a record shop over there and eventually they put a Shoe City there. years later we bought our first home not too far from that area and used to hit up the Chinese joint over there.
