I was trying to think of what might be the equivalent of this in another talent field....like tap-dancing. lol. Some dude just comes out randomly shuffling his feet and intermittedly stomping off time and shit.

that's the creative process of at least future and young thug (maybe more atlanteans) laid bare. you don't write. you pick a beat you like, get in the booth, and stumble your way through bad lines until something good comes up. then you rerecord the good lines and make a song out of it. or your producers (in future's case metro and esco) edit your lines into something coherent (future talks about it here: https://youtu.be/MzG3LOc7-q4?t=1m52s). it's unconventional but it's better at capturing the rapper's id than actually writing rhymes or jay z style fake "not writing" where you're constantly thinking of lines and editing them in your amazing memory to be assembled into a song at a later date. and it works (and may be absolutely necessary) in a market as competitive as atlanta where everyone is relentlessly releasing music and you need to keep recording while you can lest your wave die out and you fall out of favor
there is a lot of trash generated by this process. future's "nobu nobu nobu nobu nobu nobu" is probably the worst line in rap history. i hate that the amazing "jumpman" beat is sullied by that awful awful awful awful awful awful line. but when you're just winging it and going off a feeling you can come up with some amazing stuff that is actually in the moment (see: any of future's heartfelt ciara-related lines or thugger's more outlandish absurdist lines)
btw lil b is probably responsible for all of this. i don't think he gets the credit he deserves for really leaning into "based" rapping like he did and showing what could actually be done with true freestyle rapping
