I am leaning turrible.

Spike doesn't do "hood" very well. His comedy as of late has been hit or miss.

But I still pull for the dude to get a W.

This is the first narrative piece he wrote that wasn't set in Brooklyn, other than School Daze.

The trailer makes me wonder how long he was actually in Chicago. A week? Two weeks?

Chicago and what's happening there is largely about youth.
I see Wesley Snipes, Dave Chappelle, Jennifer Hudson, Nick Cannon...
Where the youth?

If your movie is about the violence in Chicago, like the name of it seems to imply, then make it about the violence in Chicago.

I guess realism wasn't necessarily what Spike is going for, but I think "Chiraq" is serious enough that it deserves realism.

i don't think realism is needed.

i'm not bothered that he didn't use a bunch of teens and 20somethings to depict the perpetrators and victims of the violence in Chicago.

If any of you are holding a camera, he's your Daddy...show him some respect, dammit. He told you 30 years ago what he was doing: Making Black Film.

It doesn't have to be perfection. It gives you something to best.

He got Jennifer Hudson to agree to recreate some PERSONAL ass trauma on screen. He got Sam Jackson. He got John Cusack He got Nick Cannon. It looks like we getting School Daze type musical numbers. What the fuck else does he have to do for you to pay to see it??!?!?

Even if it's a fail, it'll be an ambitious noble fail. I'm curious as to what Jennifer Hudson's story is in this film considering what really happened to her family.

Im not going to bitch about it not exuding the essence of the Chi....But the actual way that Chi gang culture is depicted from the actual clip, whether its an over the top drama/comedy/musical (blue bandanas???), is strange...

Also the violence in the Chi hits a little too close to home for me. Dont know if Im ready to go all fantasy land on the subject just yet...Gonna give Spike a chance because it DOES look intriguing....

this just might be a good return to form

i slightly wish this was shot on film, the digital hd aesthetic is working but its a bit distracting

1) it's Spike Lee. Everything after 25th Hour has been booboo (I dont count Inside Man, it's hard to mess up a straightforward storyline)

2) "women stop fucking and men will put down guns" from a black male director, that's an abomination of a plot

this might wind up worse than She Hate Me

This army of blue ballin chicks concept is almost insulting.

I'mma support and give spike the benefit of the doubt though, I hope that ain't the main thing.

Also, seems like cusack is kinda playing pfleger.....given that spike set up shop at st sabinas first, I wonder what his portrayal will be like

I still want to know what was in his mind to make a movie who's plot was split between the timely and important discussion on corporate greed and nutso plot point of a dude fucking lesbians (who loved every minute of the hetero dick) porno style to get side cash.

They filmed for this in my literal backyard along with other locations in legit Englewood...so I admired the fact he was willing to take his crew DIRECTLY into the heart of the jungle.

But I wanted some gripping drama shit...some gritty down to the core shit....

This fantasy shit and some of those lines makes me cringe. Like...LEGIT cringe.

I will TRY to reserve this judgment but this is my city and if he fucks this up? I'm done with Spike unless its a documentary.

Greek tragicomedy by Aristophanes, where the women of Greece withheld sex from the husbands to end the Peloponnesian War.

Because if the strongest depiction of women is the "put your guns down or no pussy" story line, they are going to let him have it.

44. "RHYMEFEST TO SPIKE LEE: ‘YOU OWE CHICAGO AN APOLOGY’"

RHYMEFEST TO SPIKE LEE: ‘YOU OWE CHICAGO AN APOLOGY’
MIRIAM DI NUNZIO on November 4, 2015

Chicago rapper Rhymefest — a k a Cheland Smith — does not mince words when it comes to Spike Lee’s upcoming film “Chi-Raq.” He took to Twitter on Wednesday with this message: “Spike Lee exploited poor people.”

SpikeLee exploited poor people https://t.co/pI2XhxR45E

— Rhymefest (@RHYMEFEST) November 4, 2015

Rhymefest had plenty to say about the trailer for the controversial film opening Dec. 4, as well as the celebrated filmmaker, during an interview late Wednesday afternoon.

“I’d say , you owe Chicago an apology. And you owe Chicago your presence to repair the damage. I would like you to come to Chicago and speak to more community leaders and Father Pfleger . Get with the people who have programs in the community that are effective, and support those programs.”

The singer said his tweet was sparked by his reaction to the film’s trailer, released earlier this week, and to a script of the movie he received from a Chicago actor, whom he would not identify, who was asked to be in the film and then booted in favor of an out-of-towner. Whether the script was the final shooting version, Rhymefest did not know, but said the trailer supported pretty much what he read in the script he received.

“I saw the trailer. It looks just like the script I read, and it verified everything I thought. I was more shocked when I saw the trailer than when I was reading the script. I grieved for the 9-year-old little boy who was shot , and now a comedy is being made about death in Chicago.”

The film, whose star-studded cast includes Samuel L. Jackson, Jennifer Hudson, Angela Bassett and Wesley Snipes, among others, is directed by Lee and co-written by Lee and Kevin Willmott. The satire puts a contemporary spin on the mythological Greek comedic tale of Lysistrata, who gets the women of ancient Greece to withhold sex from their husbands and boyfriends as a way to end the Peloponnesian War. The trailer depicts a group of African-American women joining forces to do just that in Chicago’s toughest and most crime-ridden neighborhoods as a means of ending the violence.

“THAT’S how we want to depict our community? THAT’S the answer?” Rhymefest said.

Rhymefest said the idea of the violence in Chicago being compared to a war — hence the film’s title — angers him perhaps most of all.

“Spike Lee should have used Chicago writers. None of them were from Chicago. This movie is not about a war. This is not a war. Wars are fought for a reason generally. People fight over land, over money. . . . That’s not what’s happening on Chicago’s South Side . . . . People like to say its gangs fighting over turf. That’s not it. It’s senseless violence. People feel disrespected and not validated. They’re poor. Guns are cheap. Drugs are cheap. Because guns and drugs are cheap senseless violence happens. The guns and drugs get into the hands of children. . . . You can pick up the story of this film and drop it into any . Chicago was used because of the media’s portrayal of the violence and it was used as a way for to sell tickets. We were used. We were exploited. This story is not specific to Chicago.”

But Rhymefest also said the crime stems from the disintegration of the family unit that’s prevalent in society.

“Where do we start ? With our families. No doubt with our families. If the family can’t be healed then we cannot begin to quell the violence. . We have to begin by finding the fathers, the mothers, because some of these children don’t have mothers either. We need to find foster parenting. . . . The mayor is blaming police for not cracking down enough for fear of losing their jobs or being sued. Gov. Rauner cuts off funding to after school programs and free mental health clinics. Preachers are losing their congregations — that’s the best movie I’ve never seen.”

Rhymefest, who refers to Pfleger as “my brother, my mentor,” said he and the priest/community activist do not see eye-to-eye on Lee’s film, which Pfleger has openly supported.

“I love Father Pfleger,” Rhymefest said. “I speak to him once a week. But my brother, my friend, my mentor was used . I told him that. . . . We’re still on good terms. You can disagree with a friend. . . . It’s unfortunate that someone as revered as Spike Lee used his reputation to come in and act like he was gonna help the community and then just leave with the money. I hope he’ll come back and make good on the community. But the money can’t take back the mockery. It can’t take back opportunity that was missed” by Lee to create a film that truly reflects the violence plaguing Chicago.

“If I were to go to Brooklyn and grab one community leader and say I’m gonna make a movie called ‘Blacks Kill Blacks All Day in Brooklyn,’ and this movie is written by somebody from Chicago, I don’t think Spike Lee would like that. At the end of the day, I take issue with the name ‘Chi-Raq.’ The way the film was made in secrecy, and then Lee tells us to just trust him. That’s the story of Chicago. Everything’s done in Chicago in secrecy. That’s the politics of Chicago.

“He learned Chicago politics quick,” he said with a laugh.

“I just want to say I’m a fan of Spike Lee, and also fan of some of the films he has made,” Rhymefest continued. “But this is a perfect example of somebody not from Chicago who comes to Chicago and exploits the violence and the situation without leaving anything sustainable in its place.”

Rhymefest said he plans to see the film, and, if it’s “better than what’s in the script or the trailer,” he’s “willing to shake Spike Lee’s hand and apologize.”

http://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/nov/26/spike-lee-female-students-should-go-on-sex-strike-to-combat-campus

Spike Lee has said a sex strike by women could help prevent sexual harassment on US college campuses.

“I think a sex strike could really work on college campuses where there’s an abundance of sexual harassment or date rapes,” Lee told Stephen Colbert on The Late Show on US television. “Second semester it’s going to happen. Once people coming back from Christmas and some stuff jumps off, there’s going to be sex strikes in universities and college campuses across this country.”

A recent survey of US college campuses found that nearly a quarter of female students had experienced some form of unwanted sexual advance. More than 10% of respondents said they had been physically assaulted or threatened with physical assault by men in pursuit of sex.

The director was discussing his new film Chi-Raq with Colbert. Based on Lysistrata, a satire by Aristophanes, the film follows a group of women on the south side of Chicago who decide to fight gun crime by withholding sex from their men. In real life, the film has reportedly inspired a group of 37 women to follow suit.

Lee was criticised by Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel earlier this year for appropriating Chi-Raq – a rap slang term used to compare the violence in Chicago’s Englewood neighbourhood to that seen in the Iraq war zone – as his film’s title. In the interview, Colbert cited statistics that showed that since 2001 more Americans had died in Chicago than in Iraq and Afghanistan combined.

Lee also commented on the killing of Laquan McDonald, a 17-year-old black Chicago resident who was killed by Jason Van Dyke, a white police officer who has since been charged with McDonald’s murder. The director praised the decision to release police dashcam footage of McDonald’s killing, despite fears that it would prompt violent protest.

“They’re worried because they think black folks in Chicago are going to run amok,” Lee said. “I think there’s a way to have peaceful demonstrations without tearing stuff up. I’m glad the tape was released. This is democracy. I sometimes think we pick and choose what America should see”.

Demonstrations in Chicago in the wake of McDonald’s death have been largely non-violent, with President Obama praising “the people of his hometown for keeping protests peaceful”.

“Like many Americans, I was deeply disturbed by the footage of the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald,” he wrote on Facebook. “This Thanksgiving, I ask everybody to keep those who’ve suffered tragic loss in our thoughts and prayers, and to be thankful for the overwhelming majority of men and women in uniform who protect our communities with honor.”

47. "Chicago woman calls for a sex strike to stop gun violence (swipe)"

Similar to the premise of "Chi-Raq," April Lawson from the South Side of Chicago, wants both married and single women to join her in a sex strike until the violence in their city ends.

"In a patriarchal society, a problem will not be addressed until it directly affects men," Lawson wrote in Change.org petition she created for the strike.

Lawson is calling for all women to abstain from sex with men, amid the recent killings of 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee and 20-year-old aspiring model Kaylyn Pryor. She expressed in her petition that men in her community remain "apathetic" to the gun violence and murders in Chicago.

According to data from the Chicago Tribune, in 2015 there have been 2,689 shooting victims in the city thus far.

Lawson is not the first to call on other women to join such a strike.

Women activists have notably led sex strikes to end violence, including Liberian Nobel Peace Prize winner Leymah Gbowee, women activists in Kenya in 2009 and women in the Philippines in 2011.

Spike Lee's new satirical film "Chi-Raq," takes a look at gang and gun-related violence in Chicago through a sex strike organized by the women of the community -- a spin on ancient Greek comedy "Lysistrata".

Lee posted a picture on Instagram yesterday that reads "warning no intercourse," recognizing Lawson's real-life "Chi-Raq" efforts.

without seeing the film.

These same people were not nearly as vocal when drill rappers were calling Chicago 'Chiraq' in their songs. Shit....Nicki Minaj put out a song called Chiraq and she ain't even from Chicago. I don't get it. I thought it was obvious why Spike decided to name the film Chiraq.

Having said that, I hope Spike continues operating in his ministry of making all the right people fifty shades of mad.

If the film doesn't make someone mad.....Spike Lee didn't make it.

I can't help but thinking of that movie 'Life is Beautiful' (a comedy with a backdrop of the holocaust). I suppose it could be argued that the time lapse is a factor in legitimizing one and not the other. But this is what artists do. I'm not on board with the 'can't make a comedy about something so tragic' line....but of course, the execution is vital and it's certainly a risk when an artist attempts something like this.

I hope it's good....it has the potential to be really bad and offensive....but Spike has some benefit of the doubt with me.
