"How'd you pick your therapist?"

I have resigned myself to the fact that I NEED to talk to someone.

Right now, I'm using the behavioral health provider search that my health insurance has.

Do you find it easier to speak with someone of the opposite sex?

Can you tell me what your preliminary session was about? Did you dive right in or did you just kind of build a rapport?

I've scheduled an appointment with someone, we'll see how it goes.

How many different people did you see before you found the right fit?

Also, how long does one generally stay in therapy?

I got lucky and the first one assigned to me was perfect. Saw her for a few years and she helped me worked though so many issues. And the thing I loved most she didnt hesitate to let me know when she felt I was done and didnt need her any more. She didnt try to keep me on the hook.

and as far as I know, you don't need any kind of advanced degree to call yourself a life coach.

i only met one in some IT cert course I was taking years back, they brought in a life coach an hour a week. First time I had even heard of that. The first week she was mad inspiring, and everyone loved her. By the 3rd time, she just became kind of annoying. Then it got to a point where she was getting pissy and kind of lashing out a bit at people who weren't fawning all over her. Telling us about how celebrities pay thousands of dollars for her advice, and that we should be grateful for her.

So I maybe unfairly judge all life coaches based on her. They seem to be walking self-help books. What ever works for people though.

but there's still a LOT of bias there that would likely make the relationship not as therapeutic as one may need.

a good friend is great for processing and working through some things, but if you feel the need for therapy, then you need a trained professional, imo.

problems/issues. therapists are trained not to do that. a friend is too personal, they may take it on themselves because they care about you on a personal level.

their issues tend to stay with you
you worry about them
and there is bias there
because they know you
because they may have been there themselves

the exact reason why i went to therapy is because i was in a crisis and i couldnt keep crying to my friends about it expecting to see me through

of course they were there but they were being friends
encouraging me
distracting me with outings

and the therapist was there to help me through the feelings constructively

can a friend do that? possibly
but it's not ideal
they have their own shit and anyone with the best intentions can mess things up

.... some shit is just above a muhfukka's paygrade. Going to a therapist and confiding in a friend are not mutually exclusive. If you got some shit with you (and you KNOW when you do), friends simply cannot be a substitute for professional help.

therapy takes time
there is no complication of a personal relationship
therapists don't necessarily give advice, or at least in the way one would expect or the way a friend typically does

as i knew she was in therapy
she gave me one, i met with dude and he told me that he thought a colleague with his own practice would be a better fit and he was 100% right

i was upset. i didn't need meds and i didn't have a diagnosed disorder
i just needed to talk to someone

he referred me to a great therapist who does individual and group and i've been going ever since

i am no where near in the state i was in when i first started going (non stop tears)

i basically go and talk about stuff happening and work on communicating my feelings to myself and to folks in my life i need to address about certain things
