Pass The Popcorn: Common Will Square Off Against Keanu Reeves As The Lead Villain Of ‘John Wick 2’

BY SCOTT HEINS

Having already more than proven his acumen in recording booths and on stages, Common is now continuing his foray into film acting. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed at the Chicago MC will play the lead villain in Jon Wick 2, the upcoming sequel to Keanu Reeves‘s wildly successful (and hyper-violent) 2014 action film.

For those unfamiliar with the first Jon Wick, the plot centers around Reeves’s status as an almost-retired hit man, one whose house is broken into not long after his wife has passed away. Burglars beat him and viciously kill his dog, which sets him off on a return-to-form rampage. Jon Wick was essentially a clinic in straightforward vendetta-quest action filmmaking, with the titular protagonist proving all-but-invincible. Perhaps he’ll meet his match, though, in Common?

As THR notes, “plot details for the new one are being kept muzzled but Common will be the movies’ chief villain, a head of security for a female crime lord.” Jon Wick 2 will be directed by Chad Stahelski and is slated to begin filming this week. The casting announcement follows up Common’s recent landing of a super-villain role in the upcoming Warner Bros. Suicide Squad film (alongside Will Smith and Jared Leto, no less), as well as his role opposite Liam Neeson in Run All Night. Common will also appear in The Wiz Live!, NBC’s live recreation of the classic 1975 musical, later this year.

For someone who couldnt get radio play or much recognition for his music. But now he is doing voice work in commercials, TV shows, movies, an oscar, a golden globe, hosting a furniture making show. I am not even mad. Make that money with your stiff acting.

so it's irrelevant. Common probably shows up to set on time, is pleasant to work with, takes direction well, and is professional.

People underestimate how far the above will get you in the entertainment business...being a "good actor" has very little to do with it most of the time...unless you value awards, of course.

But if you have no desire for acting awards, you can still be successful and work all the time...

how many no name up and coming actors who are as bad as him at their craft are getting jobs because they are pleasant to work with? You think someone from Wyoming who has dreamed of being a star their whole lives and cant act for shit shows uo to an audition and gets the part? Nope.

alot more than you think.

>being a star their whole lives and cant act for shit shows uo

Nope. But conversely actors that are great at what they do but are unbearable and unprofessional on set don't keep getting the huge paychecks either.

point being, name matters, yes. acting skills matter yes. but work ethic is JUST as important, if not more, once you've made a name for yourself.

Directors LOVE working with Meryl Streep..she is widely considered one of the nicest and most professional actors...you hear directors and producers say that about her alot and it means something...her career has been what it is in large part because of that. she has gotten the meaty roles she has in large part because of that.

you are trying to say Meryl Streep's work ethic is equally responsible for her success as her acting ability. You know damn well that aint true. Sure work ethic and on set demeanor plays a factor in your success in Hollywood. BUT there are far to many assholes that are successful in Hollywood for me to believe it is equally as important as acting ability. When it all comes down to a role if an actor has chops but is a complete dick chances are that actor will still get the role because of his/her ability.

And/or their careers don't last as long as hers.

* ESPECIALLY WOMEN (and anyone who isn't a white man too). If Streep were difficult on set she likely wouldn't have had so many chances to prove herself.

fuck you.

He did a great job with the physical choreography involved in the fight scenes in the first John Wick flick. It wasn't a role that necessarily required a ton of emotional diversity, which suited Keanu Reaves perfectly IMO.

http://blogs.indiewire.com/shadowandact/common-inks-2-year-first-look-deal-with-hbo-20151027

A day after the rapper-turned-actor joined the cast of the sequel to "John Wick" to play the movie's main villain, Common has now inked a two-year first-look TV deal with premium cabler HBO, which will see him develop and produce projects for the network through his Freedom Road Productions shingle.

Certainly premium cable is likely the most ideal home for any content creator wanting a certain kind of creative freedom, and I'm curious to see what Common has in mind. He's already serving behind the camera as a producer on Lena Waithe's Chicago-set Showtime drama project, which just got a pilot order at the network.

Beyond that, he's busy, and will next be seen on the big screen in the ensemble cast "Suicide Squad," as well as "Barbershop 3" and, on the small screen in "The Wiz Live!," a live television production of the 1975 musical "The Wiz."

Deadline was first to report the news of the HBO deal.

If Common is the main villain, it could mean he'll have to do more actual acting versus doing a ton of physical acting since for the most part, main villains don't typically do a ton of heavy lifting in terms of actual physical fighting outside of facing the protagonist in the final scenes of the movie. I wouldn't be wary if Common was a hired henchman to face Keanu, similar to the role he played in the flick with Liam Neeson, but this could be risky. I hope Common isn't the sole reason this sequel stinks since the first John Wick movie was so great.

angle for stars that factored into their success (not just acting skills).

That went up exponentially once hip-hop artists got in the film arena.

Young people just liked seeing certain hip-hoppers in film, skills regardless.

Plus, when you like someone, seeing them struggle a bit almost increases your appreciation they are "trying".

Plus, a lot of people don't value acting that much and they just want very little out of movies in the first place.

So.....

Some folks like to see their "man" or "woman" struggle a bit and eventually "make it" in an arena like film.

Com's been doing that for a while.

Pass The Popcorn: Common To Play Lead Role In “Black Samurai” TV Series

By ELIJAH C. WATSON

In recent years, Common has seemed to focus more on his acting career than music career (his last full length album was 2014’s Nobody’s Smiling), showing us another side to his multi-talented self. He starred in 2014’s Selma as Civil Rights Movement leaderJames Bevel (he won both the 2015 Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song and the 2015 Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Glory,” the film’s theme song); 2015’s Run All Night; and will be in this year’s DC Extended Universe extravaganza, Suicide Squad.

With all of that in play, the Chicago artist may have finally found his perfect role — he’s set to star in a television adaptation of Black Samurai.

As Variety reports, the TV project is currently in development and will feature Common in the show’s leading role. The Wu-Tang Clan‘s RZA is attached as an executive producer.

Based on Marc Olden‘s 1974 book series (which inspired the 1977 film of the same name), the forthcoming TV adaptation follows the story of Robert Sand (Common) who is rescued by a Japanese samurai master and trained for several years. However, upon witnessing his teacher and fellow samurai killed by terrorists, Sand seeks vengeance against the people that killed his friends.

“Robert Sand is like black Jason Bourne. Black Samurai is one of the most unique, timely and fun experiences I’ve ever read, while at the same time tackling some serious subjects around race and diversity,” Andre Gaines, Black Samurai‘s producer, toldVariety. “With John Wick 2 and Suicide Squad coming up, Common was an obvious choice for the role, and I’m thrilled to have him on board. I believe he’s the next great American actor.”

Gaines and other producers attached to the show are currently shopping the project. Once a network signs on the search for a director and writer will begin. But considering Common and RZA will be participating in it (the latter is a known lover of martial arts and samurai films, having contributed to projects such as Afro Samurai and his own The Man With The Iron Fists), hopefully we’ll be seeing Black Samurai on our TV screens soon.

Y'all can debate over if that's a justifiable reason to be like "fuck common" but there shouldn't be a mystery. Fuck common

On top of that shit, he is aggressively bad at acting though. people talk about bad actors, he's bad at acting. Anything he leads in is automatically lowered in potential quality, Imo.

Maybe y'all favorite show was hell on wheels and y'all love just wright, iono

...is hating? You're right. We couldn't possibly think his acting is stiff. That's impossible. We have to be jealous of his success somehow. Even with any other time we praise other actors, some who get paid even more than Common, for their work, we're somehow jealous of Common. Ok, bruh.

Renee Zellweger, Common Join Sarah Jessica Parker Romantic Drama ‘Best Day Of My Life’

Entertainment Now Variety

Renee Zellweger, Common, Isabella Rossellini, Simon Baker, Taylor Kinney, and Gus Birney have joined the cast of Sarah Jessica Parker’s romantic drama “Best Day of My Life.”

Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi’s Ambi Group is producing. Parker portrays a jazz vocalist in New York City after she receives a diagnosis that shatters her world and jolts her to her core as she prepare for an upcoming world tour.

Fabien Constant is directing the film from a screenplay written by Laura Eason. Parker will also serve as producer alongside Alison Benson, Iervolino and Bacardi. The movie is being executive produced by Phil Hunt and Compton Ross of Head Gear Films, who are co-financing the film.

Principal photography will begin this week in New York City. Ambi Distribution is handles worldwide sales. CAA is co-repping the film’s domestic sale.

“Best Day of My Life” is the second collaboration between Ambi and Parker, following the romantic comedy “All Roads Lead to Rome” in 2014.

“Sarah Jessica’s intense passion for this film is contagious, and enabled us to bring together such an extraordinary cast,” Iervolino said. “We’re very happy to be doing another movie with her, especially one as layered and poignant as this.”

Zellweger, Common and Baker are represented by CAA. Rossellini is represented by APA. Kinney is represented by Principal Talent. Birney is represented by CESD.

Made sense.

he's a way better rapper than an actor in terms of the range of things he can express. Way better. But since the music business is drying up, more power to him for getting those Hollywood dollars, especially since he appears to be such a limited actor.

To Common's credit, he did a good job with the action scenes in the flick. I'm sure to a degree, a stunt double did some of the heavy lifting in this more involved aspects, but I don't remember Common being a weak link when the action started, especially that CQC scene in the subway car.

Common To Topline Starz’s ‘Black Samurai’ Reboot From RZA, Jerry Bruckheimer

Movies & TV

Lesley Goldberg | August 22, 2017

Starz is ready to get its samurai on.

The premium cable network is teaming with Common, RZA and Jerry Bruckheimer to develop Marc Olden’s book series Black Samurai as a scripted TV series. Common is attached to star, while RZA and Bruckheimer will executive produce.

The drama follows Robert Sand (Common), a highly trained American Army Ranger whose life is transformed when he meets a legendary Japanese master who invites him to train as a samurai. After his beloved sensei and samurai brothers are killed by mercenaries, Sand is thrust on a worldwide journey of both revenge and self-discovery.

Starz notes that the potential series will be updated from the original novels and subsequent 1977 blaxploitation film that starred Jim Kelly. The drama will be a mashup of the spy and martial arts genres and infused with the heart, soul and music of Common and the Wu-Tang Clan, creating a modern-day international action star.

Common (Selma) will executive produce via his Freedom Road Productions banner. Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA (American Gangster, Fox’s short-lived drama Gang Related) and Mitchell Diggs will also executive produce for Wu Films. Bruckheimer and his JBTV banner’s Jonathan Littman, James Oh and KristieAnne Reed will exec produce. Freedom Road’s Derek Dudley, Shelby Stone (The Chi) and Diane Crafford as well as Cinemation’s Andre Gaines (Bill Nye: Science Guy) will also exec produce. Cormac and Marianne Wibberley (National Treasure, Bad Boys II) will pen the script and serve as showrunners should the project move forward. Starz will retain all global distribution and home entertainment rights to the series.

“We cannot wait for the world to meet Robert Sand — part Jason Bourne, part James Bond, and 100 percent the hero we need today.

Black Samurai promises to be an action-packed ride and with the Bruckheimer team, Common, RZA and Andre at the helm, we can feel certain this will be exceptional storytelling,” Starz president of programming Carmi Zlotnik said.

Black Samurai marks Common’s return to the small screen following his leading role on AMC Western Hell on Wheels, which he exited during its fourth season in 2014.

“I’m beyond excited about Black Samurai. This is a unique and special project that offers something rarely seen in art and culture today,” Common said. “It’s an honor to play the character of Robert Sand and to have my production company, Freedom Road Productions partnering with Jerry Bruckheimer Productions, RZA and Starz to deliver something fresh and new to people. I can’t wait to dig into this character and the martial arts worlds of gun fu, kung fu, jujitsu and more. Look out world, Black Samurai is coming!”

RZA most recently starred in Fox’s Gang Related. He also directed an episode of Marvel’s Netflix drama Iron Fist and guest-starred in Fox’s 1980s cocaine drama Snowfall.

“I’ve been a fan of the Robert Sand character since I was a kid, Black Samurai being one of the films that got me into the martial art genre. A chance to combine with Jerry Bruckheimer, Common and Andre Gaines to reintroduce this character to a new generation makes myself and my partner Mitchell Diggs at Wu Films super stoked. With the Wibbs leading the writing team and Starz as our outlet, I’m certain the series will find its fan base,” RZA said.

Should Black Samurai move forward, it would join a Bruckheimer TV roster that also includes CBS’ The Amazing Race and Fox’s Lucifer.
“We are absolutely thrilled to partner with Starz, Common, RZA and Andre Gaines on Black Samurai,” Bruckheimer said. “This incredible creative team will combine all of their talents and experience to bring the classic book series to brand-new life with cutting-edge artistry, music and imagery.”

Bruckheimer, Common, Littman and Wu Films are repped by CAA. Gaines is with Ethan Cohan, Todd Weinstein and Gordon Bobb at Del Shaw. The Wibberleys are with UTA.

Starz has found success with scripted originals that target underrepresented viewership. The cable network’s roster includes Survivor’s Remorse, Power, Outlander, American Gods and Ash vs. Evil Dead, among others.

Watch Lena Waithe, Common's New Trailer for 'The Chi'

Showtime's "timely coming-of-age story" to premiere in January

'Master of None' Emmy winner Lena Waithe and Common co-executive produce Showtime's 'The Chi.'

By Althea Legaspi

Master of None Emmy winner Lena Waithe returns to her hometown for new series The Chi, which she created and executive produced. Co-executive produced by fellow Chicago native and rapper Common along with Elwood Reid, the show's first season was entirely shot in its namesake city and its new trailer features vivid street scenes and introduces its ensemble cast.

In addition to serving as an executive producer, Common is also a costar. The cast includes Alex Hibbert (Moonlight), Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton), Jacob Latimore (Sleight), Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine (Treme, Queen of Katwe), Yolanda Ross (Treme, The Get Down), Armando Riesco (Bull) and Tiffany Boone (The Following).

The show is billed as a "timely coming-of-age story centering on a group of residents on the South Side of Chicago who become linked by coincidence, but bonded by the need for connection and redemption." Set to another city resident's song, Chance the Rapper's "All We Got," the first clip offers a peek into the character's lives. It showcases a wide range emotions they experience, from mourning a death to a humorous exchange between a mother (Ross) busting her son Emmett (Latimore) for hiding a girlfriend under his bed and then inviting her to breakfast.
The Chi premieres on Showtime January 7th.

Common Is Stepping Into The Shoes Of A Doctor In New TV Series

Movies & TV Stacy-Ann Ellis @stassi_x | August 30, 2018 - 1:17 pm

It’s always interesting to watch seasoned entertainers continue to develop different legs of their craft as the years pass. For Common, we’ve seen the Chicago native blossom from hip-hop to TV/film t0 social activism seamlessly. Although his music has a healing effect on it’s own, now he’s gearing up to take on a new role that is responsible for saving lives in the most literal way.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Common will star in the Saturday Night Knife & Gun Club TV series, which finds him taking on the role of a doctor in the emergency room. Common’s character, “a street-smart ER doctor with a troubled past,” works at an inner-city hospital and has to lead his staff against trying work conditions and corporate greed to save lives. The drama—which is based on author B.P. Reiter’s novel of the same name—is the first development in Common’s Lionsgate TV overall deal.

Eric Eisner optioned the rights to the book, and will executive produce the potential series alongside Common’s Freedom Road Productions and Lionsgate TV. The series does not yet have a network.

“I’m thrilled to partner with Lionsgate and Freedom Road to develop this exciting new TV series based on this engrossing book,” Eisner said. “We have a great script and a strong team in place, and I look forward to bringing the series to life.”

Congrats to Common on the big news.
