"The last time you felt discrimination taking place."

please note the word felt allows for the chance that I could be looking at this wrong, though I doubt it

also please note Im not cheap or opposed to spending money to be in a public coffee shop

but this morning I was in a Starbucks in a nice part of town also crawling with sketchy people, I was told I had to make a purchase to sit down (and use their wifi/charge my phone). that was the first out of however many hundred times I've been in a Starbucks where that happened.

I didnt trip, I bought something. My immediate assumption wasn't racial discrimination, it may have been a classism thing (see my previous mention of a nice part of town crawling with sketchy people)

P.S. try not be a bamma with your replies, if you're wondering if Im talking about you the chances are high.

that certain employees at each store either give a fuck or don't to enforce. Just because one store emloyee doesnt care doesn't mean its not a store policy.

Racism is there by default; it's the base case, not the exception. It happens via _unconscious_ processes in all of us, including black people

The question is to what degree.

aren't aimed at individuals. it's the policy an entire store adopts because it's in a "bad" neighborhood.

these are the same spots with either locks on the bathroom doors or they set it up so you gotta be buzzed in.

it's not the person, it's anybody that walks into that location. cuz if you go into another one of their stores a mile away you don't have none of that...

Ftr, I've never knowingly been to a Starbucks that gave a shit... to the point that I
didn't even know this was a policy. I don't frequent Starbucks tho.

and it's happened hundreds of times...? they like greet you with that? if so, why do you even give them your money? who cares if it's discriminatory. that's rude. they would not get my money.

now if you sat down and opened your laptop without buying anything then that's sensible for them to assume you might just be there for the free wifi and say something. that doesn't mean it's not discriminatory. it just means it's not so cut and dry fucked up.

if they want to make it a policy they can change the wificode daily and put it on receipts or hand it out with purchase.

I get the bathroom rule, but people go to coffee shops all the time just to get shit done

A hot Eastern European blonde was talking to some fat older white guy in front of her window. They must have struck a deal because he reached to open the door to go in. Just then two African guys roll up, one about 6'4", super skinny with a gold grill. He slammed 100 Euro up against the class and the white dude made a deferential gesture. I just heard the chick scream "No, NO!" before she yanked the white dude inside.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

If that were said to me, and there was nothing but white & asian faces behind the counter...yeah i'd feel some kinda way....

If it was a white person that said it within earshot of multiple Black employees...i'd probably just brush it off...after feeling some kinda way initially....

If it was a white person that said it within earshot of multiple black employees....i'd feel some kinda way..

If it was a B/black employee that said it....i'd probably joke around with them and feel out the situation.

i'm walking around my hood, I see a "for rent, one bedroom apt $1200" and I think "thats a great price, i better call"

i call and the landlord is on site he says "im here now, you want to see the place?"

I say "for sure!"

i walk up to the door and when the dude opens the door he looks at me, waits a beat and says "whats your credit score?"

no "hey, great day! tell me about yourself....."

i wasnt exactly about that life right then and there, this was more of a speculative look at an apartment. Now, I hear that its competitive and if you are ready to look you should have all files on hand and I do understand that asking that question cuts through the bullshit and saves you time but...

I do wonder if the interaction would have gone down differently if I were not a black man.

in that black people have a high ratio of poor individuals in the group

and you want to make sure you don't get a bum renter

BUT this is NYC, you don't know how deep a persons pockets are

actually this is why that article about racist tenants fucked with me because it pointed out that peoples irrational hate for brown will trump their love of green.

I'm in a fucked position where I earn pretty well but my credit is in repair mode

I've never ever been late with rent so I have a very great rental history just bad credit history (student loans of which I am cleaning up the mess)

So I am going to have to be ready to pony up a few stacks up front to get in the door

I'm also going to create a well designed leave-behind packet with relevant information, bio and landlord reviews

47. "as far as the Starbucks policy"
In response to Reply # 0

there was a Starbucks downtown in Austin where the store posted a sign asking patrons to buy something to use the bathroom.

The reason for that was due to the store being near a hangout for homeless people.

But there has been a trend by coffee shops to crack down on people sitting in the coffeeshop and sponging their wi-fi. Usually those people are habitually in the coffee shop and only buying a single coffee and using wi-fi all day.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/you-ordered-that-latte-two-hours-ago-think-about-leaving-the-coffee-shop/2015/07/08/caa597bc-19ef-11e5-bd7f-4611a60dd8e5_story.html

It sounds in your case that they might have profiled you because of your appearance.

As far as personal experience, a buyer of my sister's (roommate) condo profiled me. Took a photo and everything. She later came back to the condo and apologized tho. Very honorable of her to do so. But being profiled is horrible. No reason for that.

In response to Reply # 47

I worked down the block from there for about 5 years, the employees would tell me the horror stories surrounding homeless people using the restroom. The funniest one was when they had some dude in there who wouldn't come out, so they finally opened it up and he was eating a can of tuna while sitting on the toilet. He had the can opener laying on the floor and had dumped the tuna-water in the trash.

I've been in there when some homeless young white couple was asking for free water and the barista gave them grande sized cups of water and the vagrants yelled at them for not giving it to them in the largest cups. Dragworm/downtown young Austin homeless are like some Mad Max motherfuckers.

In response to Reply # 0

We were at the mall, in different shops, and I went to her in the Disney store.

I saw a store employee hovering a couple yards behind her and my daughter. He pretending to check the racks and shelves along her path, following as she walked. I hung back for a minute just to be sure I wasn't just tripping.

So I come up behind him and ask him if there's a reason he's been following my wife. He asked if he cpuld help me with anything, and I said he could help by not following my wife and kid around the store.

He said he was there in case she needed assistance. I asked if it's store policy to follow around all customers until they need help, or if there was something special about my wife that she deserved such personal attention.

He gave the same answer, and my wife caught on to what was happening and came to his defense. She said he was just doing his job. I asked if he'd asked her if she needed help and she agan said he was just doing his job. I was baffled but I just let it go because she gets pissed when I do shit like this.

The prick didn't stop followikng so i just went to a tact I'm not particularly lroud of...but he left us alone after that, eso fuck him.

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/opinion-morales-starbucks-racial-equality_us_5ad7abe1e4b0e4d0715ce283

Though dramatic and absurd, the Starbucks incident in downtown Philadelphia was following a script. Four weeks earlier, black teenagers at an IHOP in Maine were asked to pay before they received food. In both cases, and in many more that go unseen because there aren’t enough moral whites uploading videos, black customers have to authenticate their existence.

To receive ordinary services and respect in white spaces, they need permission. They have to have perfect behavior and follow the “rules.” And even then, they must convince the gatekeepers of white privilege they are special enough to share space.

Social theorist and academic W.E.B. DuBois conceived a century ago “The Talented Tenth.” He was referring to exceptional black people as the solution to oppression; they would rescue the others who were struggling. However, whites have used the Talented Tenth model in various ways to restrict mostly everyone they didn’t approve of. People of color were now faced with the steepest of all hurdles: equality, but as an option.

Navigating and negotiating the white world comes with a litmus test. Outside of the exceptional brown-skinned person, everyone else will have to convince someone. In white spaces, people of color are visitors. At any moment, they can have their visitor card ripped out their hands. It is one more complication of equality. People of color have to prove they belong before they are accepted. Whites have to prove they don’t belong before they are rejected.

But here is the problem with having to prove your humanity: It takes a fact and turns it into a question. “You are a decent human being” suddenly becomes “Are you a decent human being? Show me.” It is performance art, a dance, with the person of color having to prove their worth.

Black people must convince the gatekeepers of white privilege they are special enough to share space.

In March, a group of teenagers in Maine went to an IHOP to grab a meal. They were seated and gave their order to the waitress, who politely asked them to pay before they were served. No one else in the restaurant had to pay first, only them. Before the teens could justify their existence, customers overheard the conversation and objected, and then posted the encounter on Facebook.

The IHOP manager, Melvin Escobar, apologized and said it was the first time an incident like that had ever happened. He rationalized the behavior of the waitress by saying teenagers had run out on their checks before.

Therein is the solemn consequence of racism. We evaluate people of color by the worst of their group, not the best. The teens were guilty because they were teens. The teens were guilty because they were black.

When Zora Neale Hurston wrote of herself “I am not tragically colored,” she could have been writing about the two men in Starbucks. They behaved proudly and were targeted and shamed. Their calm temperament wasn’t enough to receive a benefit from white privilege.

After being denied bathroom rights while waiting for a colleague, they refused to leave when they were told to, even when pressured by police authority. The paradox of their commitment is that they were behaving appropriately and yet they paid a price for it. It’s the balancing act people of color have to face in white spaces. Be woke but receive your punishment.

Dear white people: Equality is not optional. It is not a preference nor a benefit. It is also not a transaction you can use to absolve yourselves of racial bias by recording incidents and becoming white saviors. Fixing racism in America isn’t about recording and then pressing send.

Four friends were out for lunch in Southern California and were stunned when their server at Saint Marc in Huntington Beach asked for “proof of residency.” One of the friends, Diana Carrillo, a Latina business analyst, complained to the manager, then wrote about the encounter on Facebook. The waiter acted as if he had the authority to demand citizenship documentation in his zeal to protect his white space from women of color.

In 2017, the number of Americans who considered racism a major problem increased by 8 percentage points over the previous two years. Fifty-eight percent viewed racism as a big problem, according to the Pew Research Center study. Twenty-nine percent of the respondents said it was “somewhat of a problem,” and 12 percent thought racism was a small problem or not a problem at all. Two years earlier, only 50 percent of the population said it was a big problem, and in 2011 that number was as low as 28 percent.

That year, Barack Obama was still the president and bestowed upon the country a false sense of racial calm. The country had to be equal because the president was black. But because the president was black, he affirmed the DuBois “Talented Tenth” exception. Once Obama left office, heightened racial anxiety resurfaced, in a big way.

An eight-hour training session for Starbucks employees cannot reroute a 400-year system of preferences, advantages and racial biases
Social media has the tendency to take the worst of humanity and entertain us with the horror, like watching a car accident with mouths agape. Pretty quickly, everyone gets over it and it is business as usual. Starbucks continues to serve customers. IHOP continues to flip pancakes.

The CEO of Starbucks, Kevin Johnson, met with the two men the police handcuffed and said, “I will fix this.” Starbucks is closing thousands of stores to train employees on issues regarding racial discrimination. It is estimated to cost the company near $6 million.

Johnson is serious and overconfident at the same time. Starbucks may be successful in advising employees that you don’t call the police because a black person is waiting inside the store for a colleague. But an eight-hour training session cannot reroute a 400-year system of preferences, advantages and racial biases just because Johnson has good intentions.

Racism begins in the heart and in the mind. Its antidote is believing all people are equal and that equality is not a benefit for the few.

Racism begins in the heart and in the mind. Its antidote begins with a belief: All people are equal. But even then, even with good people, an imbalance exists because so much of racism is ingrained and accepted, and goes unnoticed. That is what keeps in place a system of privilege where white women call the police and black men are handcuffed for

In response to Reply # 0

I'm mexican american, don't speak spanish, but look like everyone there just 6 inches taller...she's afrocaribbean (with a white jewish mother) with natural hair but speaks fluent spanish. my coworker's from Cameroon via london.

we were going to take a trip up to hierve el agua (beautiful btw) & needed to rent a car. i let them go handle picking it up (since my girl speaks spanish) while I was getting supplies for the trip.

now, my girl had been experiencing microaggressions the whole trip (airline staff being extra rude, folks staring, people talking about her, etc.) but this was a step further - the guy working there started arguing with her over something with the reservation & it escalated. the guy's lucky I wasn't there because I'm not as cool under pressure as her...basically he's trying to overcharge her, being rude, saying nasty things to his coworkers in spanish, etc.

Until she tells him in spanish, "I am an american woman here on business & I demand you let me speak to your supervisor." he still has attitude, probably thinking "you're black...none of that shit matters." until she gets on the phone with his supervisor & in her best jewish mother voice calmly tells the dude on the phone how she's been treated, how it's unacceptable, how her & her company will gladly take their business elsewhere, etc. she hands the phone back to the worker & according to her, he looked like Theon Greyjoy when ramsay broke him...she got her car no problem after that.
