Id like to think they were just being short sighted on some 'hey, we move these companies to underserved neighborhoods and they will all get jobs'.

But realistically its more like, 'That unused patch with poor minorities, artists and queers? MOVE EM OUT'.

And the thing is that according to the docu one of the primary reasons the tech assholes moved there was cause San fran was 'cool'...how is that shit gonna still be cool with no artists, no women since IT is overwhelmingly male, no artists? Nightlife is gonn be a bunch of lounges playing DJ Snake with 20 dollar drinks and a bunch of assholes looking at each other awkwardly dancing.

But you're right, by the time its hit them that the cool shit they came for aint around they will be in full middle aged yuppie mode enjoying periodic visits to chain steakhouses like Morton's and pricy trips abroad.

4 races?

more in NYC: ricans, domincans, hatians, cubans, west indians, africans...

more in CA: filipinos, vietnamese, chinese, hmong, koreans, japanese, mexicans, nicoyas, salvadorians, hondurans, guatemalans, indians

if you're gonna lump all asians and latinos into 2 races...i'm gonna lump all africans into one race. is that fair? lol no snark. you compared a population of 10M to 40M

i dunno that the new tech-bro transplants are buying into the gay-friendly vibe as much. b/c the gays are also being pushed out w/this tech boom.

many of the artists and freaks and bohemians who created the city's character were gay...and relatively broke.

like this:

http://thinkprogress.org/lgbt/2014/10/20/3581941/san-francisco-lgbt-homeless/

and further, as y'all know, there are plenty SF residents who resent the gay-friendly vibe. and they can be virulently homophobic. one of them posts here. that SF dude who's always angry and tries to be cute w/those silly little blurbs in his sig all the time. he's a notorious homophobe and native San Franciscan. supablak! that's him.

fuck you.

But this sort of hoe schitt is typical of your clown ass.
You are clearly the "cutest" and most miserable bitch in all OkayPlayerdom.

F.Y.I.- I've been living this schitt and posting about this schitt for years, of course it makes me mad, you fucking imbecile.

But for you to label me a "homophobe", is your gay privilege, and once again you are loud and wrong.
So...
Eat the biggest bag of dicks in your fridge, hoe.
You don't fuckng know me, but I see you acting like a bitch again.

i've seen about half of the documentary, but can sum up the situation like this..

SF's essentially become a manifest tech-destiny where transplanted faux "progressives" come to self-actualize (see: bat kid) and jump start entrepreneurship (see: "my family's rich, so i can afford to fuck up and still stay above water).

said bro's and becky's ostensibly champion diversity, while secretly relishing in the cost prohibitiveness that keeps brown and black folk out of range.

which is why i felt like the people there were grossly underexposed to brown people or at best wanted them to be 2 dimensional tour guides to the "big city"

everybody has a story about how shit got ugly real quick

but, to be real about it, being there was really about playing peter pan.

drinking all day, smoking weed on the streets, eating real real good food and just chilling...man that shit was heaven

now in nyc eveybody is growing up (late bloomer style) and getting serious about things.

the most blatant fuck ups I knew in SF have tightened the fuck up in NYC

the folks i knew in SF put in time that was around a decade or so. some a bit less, some a bit more.

if you dont have roots there, i.e., a home or a family then why stay?

shit...even funnier is that I know people in NYC that I've known from SF and before that when I lived in Los Angeles years ago

assuming a landlord hasn't found a loophole to kick you out, you might be paying $1500/month still for a two-bedroom in the mission, while your new neighbors are dropping $4500/month for now.

anecdotally i have a friend who's still there for this reason alone.

my point is that not too many people wanna leave here if they're still paying old prices.

it's just casual curiosity.

but i certainly understand the portion of legacy folks wanting nothing to do with the new "culture" of SF, at the sacrifice of low rent.

Lyft and Uber are the most successful SF start ups within the past 5 years imo.

not related to uber, but related to gentrification...here is an example of fliers being posted in oakland:

Whites who gentrified Oakland are calling the police on innocent Black residents
Oct 16, 2015 12:48 PM by A.R. Shaw

East Oakland is one of the last locations in the Bay Area with reasonable prices for housing. The area, which is historically Black, is being gentrified by White residents. But like most cases of gentrification, the new White residents are viewing the existing Black residents as menaces to the neighborhood.

According to reports by East Bay Express, Whites are calling the police on innocent Blacks in Oakland at an alarming rate. Taking data from the website Nextdoor.com, Whites have called the police on Blacks for walking down the street, knocking on a door, and not picking up dog poop. The White residents have also called the police on Black salesmen and postal workers who were delivering items. White residents have also hired private officers to patrol the neighborhood.

Members of the Oakland Police Department have even shared that they are being forced to respond to baseless 911 calls. Police currently get over 700 calls per month on suspicious vehicles and people every month.

The response by White residents proves how racist attitudes are an essential part of the gentrification of Black neighborhoods. Along with the racial profiling, the gentrification has allowed some property owners to increase rent by as much as 120 percent due to a rise in value. It has forced some Black residents who can’t afford the increases to move.

The reverse of White flight is occurring across America. As a result, the racist biases will continue until there are legal repercussions for racial profiling by citizens.

A few years back I really started looking at this shit as some form of passive-aggressive power display that I wasn't up on, and now it *enrages* me. I've really resorted to walking down to middle of the sidewalk, making folks move and shoulder checking them if they want to act like they don't see the big black man walking. Douchebags won't make eye contact but will try to walk right in front of you.

These entitled folks have really turned me into a bully that's approaching 40.

But Genentech is expanding its campus. the city is also redeveloping downtown SSF which is causing rents to rise in the area. SSF's residential area near grand street is predominately working-class latino families. i refer to it as the "la mission nino"

19. "tech companies avoid $34M in city taxes (swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.sfgate.com/business/article/Companies-avoid-34M-in-city-taxes-thanks-to-6578396.php

Businesses in San Francisco’s Mid-Market district skirted nearly $34 million in city payroll taxes last year thanks to a controversial incentive program known as the “Twitter tax break” intended to keep tech firms from fleeing for Silicon Valley.

That sum, published in a report released Monday by the San Francisco Controller’s Office, increased by about $30 million from 2013 and is five times greater than the amount of taxes companies avoided in the two previous years combined.

The increase can be attributed, in part, to the fact that the city includes stock options in its payroll tax calculations, city officials said. Several Mid-Market companies have gone public since the incentive went into effect in 2012, including Twitter in 2013 and Zendesk last year. The 2013 figures didn’t include Twitter’s $25 billion initial public offering nor Zendesk’s $100 million IPO.

The incentive — a temporary exemption on the city’s 1.5 percent payroll tax for companies that moved into buildings in Mid-Market — was meant to attract rapidly developing tech companies and keep them from moving elsewhere.

It allowed businesses that chose to stay in the area, or move into the Mid-Market district, to cap payroll taxes at the amount they were paying when they finalized their agreement with the city for six years in an eight-year period. About 20 companies, primarily tech firms, have taken advantage of the break since its inception.

Last year, six companies qualified for the program — a drop from 11 in 2013.

Seeking to spur growth

The incentive operates under the premise that if the city can secure tenants like Twitter, other tech companies will follow suit and move into the area, spurring economic growth.

Supporters say that despite last year’s loss of $34 million in potential payroll tax, the city gained thousands of jobs, additional business tax revenue and general economic vitality that it would lose if companies like Twitter and Zendesk left town.

The report did not specify how much the city made in business tax revenue from Mid-Market companies in 2014, though Mayor Ed Lee issued a statement boasting the city’s “record revenues in business taxes.”

In 2013, the city tallied a net gain of $3.4 million from businesses in the tax-exempt zone.

Lee credited the tax break for helping the city “emerge from the Great Recession” and revitalizing the area.

“Our city is thriving with new jobs for businesses large and small, new investment, new housing and a renewed confidence in our future,” Lee said.

He called the Mid-Market area a center “of new job creation, affordable housing production and the arts in San Francisco, bringing millions of dollars in new revenue to fund vital city services.”

Program draws criticism

Critics have decried the program, saying the incentive panders to multibillion-dollar companies at the expense of small businesses and city residents who are increasingly being priced out of San Francisco.

“There needs to be a balance in the kind of investments that we’re making,” said Angelica Cabande, director of the South of Market Community Action Network. “Not only does this drive up rent and drive out small mom-and-pop businesses, it’s displacing working-class people who work in jobs that help the city run.”

Cabande also pointed to Twitter’s recent layoffs — about 240 people were fired from the tech giant’s San Francisco office in a worldwide restructuring that resulted in 336 lost jobs — as proof that the tech companies aren’t creating as many jobs as city officials claim.

In response to Reply # 0
