Hopsin - No Words

Hot New Hip Hop – Hopsin continues to roll out new videos in support of his latest album Pound Syndrome. Last month, he dropped off the official video for his Dizzy Wright-featured cut “Fort Collins,” and now today he’s back with another one for “No Words.”

Serving as a skit, the brief 1:38-minute clip finds Hopsin, aka Hash Brown, mocking rappers in the game who be stuntin in their videos with things like Lambo’s, double cups, jewelry, and guns among other things. It’s a hysterical and on point video to say the least, check it out.

I admit this isn’t a great look for modern hip hop that a guy rapping actual gibberish could make a song that’s as good as 99% of the music you’d hear out on any given night with a music video covering every cliché imaginable. And I’m sure a lot of the hip hop fans who miss when the music meant a cultural movement with real significance will go “SEE THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT WE’RE SAYING.”

But hip hop becoming this vanilla and predictable as a part of society actually means we’ve come a long way in just a few decades. A couple of weeks ago I watched the documentary The Search for General Tso on Netflix and assumed it was only about the mysterious origins of the chicken that’s in every Chinese place across the land. But it was really about cultural assimilation in America and how the General Tso chicken we eat here is really the result of decades of Chinese people coming here, initially being ostracized from their new communities, and learning how to fit in with American culture. The original version of General Tso’s was brought over in the 1970s with flavors more like the region its creator was from in Hunan and was super spicy and not at all in line with the American pallet. So they added sugar to it, dumbed it down, made it more of a traditional American experience and it blew up to the point where now, a few decades later, you can find that watered down, sugary American version of it in any mall across the country.

That’s what hip hop is now. It’s not this amazing movement like it was originating in the South Bronx when people had a point to make about urban decay. It’s not even storytelling like Notorious BIG used to do. It’s autotuned guys in sunglasses yelling about owning things and/or being competent at packaging drugs. It’s pop music, same as a Taylor Swift or anything else you’d hear on Spotify’s top 100 list. A pale white kid in Idaho will listen to it just like a kid wearing jeans below his asshole will. But that’s what it means to be a part of America. It means you’ve made it.

Also shouldn’t a parody have some sort of actual parody in it? Like that car was sick and this chick is as hot as any other I’ve ever seen a guy pour champagne on while watching BET, it undercuts the message a bit is all I’m saying:

He's been around for a good 4-5 years I figure, and has never made anything like this before. His series of songs "Ill mind of Hopsin" is dope.

I only learned about him because he performed on my stage at Paid Dues, and I had to study him just to know what his crowd might be into. And I realized he was basically like a baby Tech N9ne...similar inflections and flow. Not my cup of tea to where I'm playing his shit, but I surely recognize his skill, personality, and his great stage presence.

Its not horseshit. You ain't gotta like it. Thats what these sanctimonious born-again-sounding spectrum man-children never understand.

Popular does not mean "bad"

Complaining about the mainstream in the age of the internet makes you a bigger idiot than any other criticism of the art form itself you could ever develop.

He's mad at the next man instead of creating shit people want to hear. We're not dumb...your shit just sucks.

You think you're less of a person because some types of music doesn't appeal to you because its less popular.

You're so attached to whatever identity you've drawn around yourself that you think if its not on Top 40 radio that it means not just your taste, but you as a person are flawed and theres something wrong with how you choose to align yourself creatively.

You're scared of being an outcast.

That "low-hanging fruit" happens to be his brothers and sisters.
It'd benefit him to speak to them (and their fans) in a much less condescending way.

attacking a popular rap sound. it's a real 90's have-nots vs haves (shoutout to 15) mentality. he's harboring that same seething resentment as technically proficient but otherwise uninteresting rapper #14,345 on some middling underground label like abb or goodvibes, which isn't a good look for hopsin because while i can't stand his content he can really rap well. idk. i don't get a "funny" vibe from this. just bitterness

Nah, man... you're getting it all wrong!
YOU'RE the bitter, mad, and emotional one for not digging it!
You understand now?
lol

I feel you tho. That much is pretty obvious. Sure, dude can rap but can't be an
interesting guy for the life of him for some reason, which is unfortunate.
It's really funny that so many people in here never heard of the kid until he
parodies rappers who manage to generate interest.

In response to Reply # 0

This is the problem with 99% of so-called conscious music.
They don't do anything but whine about mainstream tropes.

You need to have your own world that you draw people into.
Rap about the shit that interests you and how you spend you time.
That's what the other guys do... and that's why they draw people in.
They're obsessed with drugs and alcohol while you're obsessed with THEM.
Who looks like the bigger loser here?

I rock with alotta different types of rap, but my favorite conscious songs are when
emcees tackle important subject matter like Immortal Technique's "Peruvian Cocaine",
Skipp Coon's "Ruremarm", Wise Intelligent's "Globe Holders" or "Rocket Launcher",
the list goes on and on.

He could have made a catchy song with that same damn beat, rapping about his usual
shit and GAINED some fans instead of being a stuck-up purist. He's long been unnecessarily
critical of other rappers in his interviews tho. He calls it "being real" but all your honesty
ain't necessary, and he's prime example.

I'm smarter than like 90% of anyone who has been a popular rapper. I know this. Its just true.

These guys ARE NOT that bright, and even the bright ones don't make that sort of "enlightened" music because its not advantageous to do so if you care about selling shit.

On top of that, if I want to learn something i've got more sources of information that 4 minutes of a song/chorus/bridge combination.

In response to Reply # 0
Thu Oct-08-15 12:51 AM by illEskoBar221

at the time when that video came out
did you guys feel that all of cliche things 90's
that the roots were mocking in that video
were wack?

or did you guys feel how alot ppl; feel about this
Hopsin vid "he's beating a dead horse"

whats interesting about that what they do vid
is all of the visuals that roots bashed are the things
that cats now say "are whats missing from the game"
and they want that "vintage 90s sound back"

i guess what im saying is hip hop fans are worst yo
like the fucking worst

niggas dont know what they want

and then my homies who like all of the Preemo boombap beats
(which are amazing sounds in their own right) are the most closed minded fucks ever

"hip has to sound like THIS"
"they have to rap like THIS"
"that aint hip hop"

but a cat who likes mainstream rap seems to be
more open and inclined to try to listen to
some classic rap...but you cant get high and mighty nigga to
step out of his range

man fuck that

niggas got stuck in one era thats what killed the sound
rap been violent (the infamous?? hnic??)
rap been drugged out (congratultions rae lets celebrate and sniff an 8th)

but now niggas want to get mad

it baffles me.
Rap has always been the voice of the youth
and all flavors of rap have existed at the same time

What a time to be alive

we live in an era where we can easily find and hear
the sounds of rap we want...we have thriving indie cats
gaining steam if their fans
you go on itunes and see indie guys music right beside the major cats

there are more than enough outlets for music now

if you dont like the shit dont listen to it
its cool to have an opinion
but man this lets bash whats hot routine is getting old man

i dont like all of the shit that is out right now
but i know where to find who makes the type of rap I enjoy

The Roots made a great song. They didn't make some preachy bullshit that didn't go beyond the tip of their noses.

The message always comes after the stuff that makes people want to listen. If you care so much about a message, go write a book or start a podcast.

Music is about...music. All that "listen to my lyrics" crap is for people who suck at doing the very thing they're trying to pretend they're good at.

It reminds me of when hip-hop really started crossing over and you would see these not horrible, but extremely generic MC's getting gigs like televised NBA half time shows.

Or basically LL Cool J's career from 92 on.

outside of the fact you like what he's saying. These guys dropped fantastic examples of wordplay, introspective thinking, and literally pushed to artform forward (or honed it's strengths) in 2015

Kendrick Lamar
Vince Staples
Earl Sweatshirt
Guilty Simpson
Run The Jewels

even your more underground cats like

Joey Bada$$ (who I can't stand)
Your Old Droog

proved that even among the backpacker set the force is still strong/

etc
Despite Future and Young Thug being popular it's not the jiggy /jeezy-trap era; we don't have to support Electric Circus Common just because he's the only one who's trying to rap, lol. There are plenty of great MC's out there, he's just not one of them.

But if you think this guy is dope, what can I tell you...get out more, lol.

Well and MC and a rapper are two different things and you know this. Only one of the artist you named is a MC and that would be K Lamar. But Hop does have crazy bars and flow. I'm not going to take that away. I have heard in this post that he knows how to move a crowd, but I haven't seen ti for myself.

Still, I can't call a dude boring when I can see that he's got nice skills and presence.

I never said he was wack, i just said he was boring.

YOU said that it was a stretch to call him boring.

I said that compared to many popular mc's today that are rightfully comparing buzz he's not up to snuff, gave examples.

YOU said that most of those mc's are just 'rappers'

I said nope, they have stage presence, skills, and something to say, something that hopskin should have...but doesn't. Ive consistently backed my points up with songs/articles, etc. You've been caping for a nigga where, like everyone in the post said, his best song is a fucking parody where he's NOT ACTUALLY RAPPING, lol.

You just caping for him cause he's got a 'message' and can string a basic bar together but in 2015 that ain't that rare (EVEN ON THE RAP CHARTS) even with dudes like future and young thug being popular. A song where he says literally nonsense. Ive proved my points, you just are kinda going 'nah nah nah nah nah'. Imma sit here, put in my 'rapper' Vince Staples tape, and smile.

Hat dance triplet flow, so they're interchangeable in a way. But people will say Future first just because he's by far the biggest in the pack.

This here is Thug more than Future bc Thug'a voice goes everywhere on the track, and he's way more high strung. Future has than lean, syzzurp'd out lazy dry voice more than anything else.

People brought up What They Do a few times in this.

The point in this isn't whether or not Hopsin is corny, whether or not he can rap, or how much you like him or don't. It's the statement he's making (which on a 1:38 skit, isn't a huge statement). He's calling out mumble rappers, that same flow that snoop called out, and a lack of lyricism. People here complain about all of those damn things. Why is it so bad when someone else does it?

And when the fuck did hip-hop lose its sense of humor? Shit doesn't have to be so damn serious. I didn't hear anyone complaining when Hannibal Burress did damn near the same thing.

Did Snoop or Hannibal Burress call their fans dumbasses?
This kind of shit should let you know it's not what he's saying but him and how he's saying it.
He's damn near crying that people would rather listen to that stuff than his cheap
Eminem knockoffs. It's more than just criticism with him.

He didn't call *his* fans dumbasses. He called fans of the ignorant bullshit that he's calling out dumbasses.

If that makes you defensive then that's on you and maybe you should check your emotions.

I can't believe people are this mad over a minute and a half parody.

It's not that serious.

The people in here that are upset don't even understand that your reaction is more telling about you and is exactly what he probably wanted.

*edit* and I've never even heard a Hopsin song and nor does this song make me want to. Just calling it like I see it. You and Game Theory (among others) are up in there post on some dumb shit.

You always do this stupid shit.
This will serve as my last halfway respectful reply to your insane ass.

>He didn't call *his* fans dumbasses. He called fans of the
>ignorant bullshit that he's calling out dumbasses.

When I said "their" I MEANT the fans of the artists they were talking
about, so all that 3rd grade childish ass name calling and insulting you
did was for naught.

>If that makes you defensive then that's on you and maybe you
>should check your emotions.

Yeah, like I just said, that's not even what I was saying.

>I can't believe people are this mad over a minute and a half
>parody.
>
>It's not that serious.

If it's not that serious why are you the one in here calling folks
emotional and all that stupid shit instead of having a discussion like I
was TRYING to do before your silly ass replied.

>The people in here that are upset don't even understand that
>your reaction is more telling about you and is exactly what he
>probably wanted.

I really don't give a shit what he wants. I'm giving my thoughts on the
situation, and unlike your pompous and unjustifiably arrogant ass, I can
see the art in more than one kind of rap. YOU are the one who seems
pretty "emotional" about that, considering you came in here insulting
people unprovoked.

certain things will never change in hip-hop...

MCs will always call out wack shit and

Underground MCs will always talk shit about the majority of the mainstream

That's just the way it is. I think it more than fair to say that the masses that listen to mainstream music don't know or give a fuck about what is considered "real" hip-hop.

And that is not exclusive to hip-hop either. Movies, books, art period have always suffered from that dynamic.

It's just funny to see the people who are usually calling others "haters" for not liking what's popular, in this post upset because some bullshit they like is being made fun of.

And as far as Kendrick goes...he is actually the anomaly in the mainstream. Mainstream always makes room for ONE respectable artist and right now it's his time. Everything else is pure 100% terrible forms of music.

There is no way to argue that the shit on your local Hot whatever station is playing music that is well crafted with respectable lyrics. It's just not. And people who like it either refuse to admit that they like bullshit or they really have no frame of reference when it comes to the art.

Some people think music is art. Others think it's entertainment. That's where the difference lies and 9.99 times out of 10, popular music is entertainment because the majority sees it that way.

This ain't like the late 90s when you had an overtly commercial and underground dichotomy. Rap is probably as diverse as it has been since the early 90s, which is why authenticity policing like this falls flat in 2015.

I hear people say this all the time.

And yes, I agree 100% that hip-hop is more diverse than ever and if you're a fan of the genre there is a ton out there to research and listen to. The Internet has afforded us that opportunity and you and I and many people we interact with in our personal circles and on this site access that diversity.

However, when you look at the majority of fans that make up the consensus, they don't seek and find that diversity. They resort to listening to whatever is popular based on what Hot whatever plays and what records are played in the club. When you look at it in that sense, there is less diversity than ever.

Back in the day, hip-hop was not as big as it is today and you had popular records from East, West, North, and South that all had their own identity. That was possible because the genre was still growing and the powers that be weren't as heavily mandating a specific sound in order to back it because the enter genre was just growing.

Now, records from every region sound the same. Everything in the mainstream has the same exact vibe and basic elements.

So yes, in my eyes, hip-hop is as diverse as ever. But that's because I seek and found out all different styles of hip-hop that I appreciate. But I deal with enough people in my personal life, at work (kids from 17-24) and on here to know that the majority still rely on what is being fed to them to dictate their tastes.

That's how it is and always will be and not just in hip-hop.

Their tastes are more diverse than they've been in almost twenty years, far as I can tell. I'll grant you that regional styles are less distinct than they used to be, but there's more individuality than there's been in a long time.

This reminds me of that last Combat Jack episode with Kweli and 9th. There will always be a counter culture pushing against what is popular. Popular will never mean good ( Vanilla Ice, Hammer and Kenny G were popular) Not all of it of course. It's funny that some people believe that we sould all love the same shit.Especially now that there's very little variety in terms of what's offered. Hopsin. The only people I know that listen and hype him around me are all white. Mostly because he affiliate himself to Insane Clown Posse and their jugaloo festival, which pretty much translate to Not for me. Tech9 is the other one in that category. I don't think they're wack though. Just not my cup of tea.

I agree with him - the autotune/strangled voice thing is fucking awful.

We all have the right to dig bullshit....Young Thug is utter bullshit. Future has gone back and forth between dropping some really clever shit and to dropping remedial level fuckery....

But here's the rub: When you know you are listening to bullshit don't get mad when people point out that beyond the club or riding around in the whip with the MUMBLE RAP blasting full tilt, a lot of that shit is pretty much wack....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

How is it "wack" or "bullshit" if you dig it?

Young Thug as an artist is pretty bad as far as percentages go, imo, but "Danny Glover"
is heat, and no amount of calling me 'dumbass' or 'emotional' or whatever is gonna
make me think otherwise. The melody/cadence is brilliance... whatever about the lyrics, b/c
so-called 'heads' praise the same kind of content from Biggie. The Young Thug song
has plenty of similes and imagery nonetheless.

I don't claim to like a whole lot of music from Future, but "I Serve The Bass" is dope.
"My" is dope. Chief Keef killed it with "John Madden" etc etc etc with many artists
that I don't necessarily listen to a lot of music from.

I can appreciate the art they make just like I appreciate any other art. Do we really
not wanna call it art because they come from low income backgrounds? That's the
same classist (and racist, in alotta cases) them other folks be on. We have alotta
brilliance in our community that hasn't seen any "formal" musical education.
Far be it from me to deny that or look down on my folks.
