"Food franchises that you never tried, but when you did you were like......."

I had this experience when I moved to cali and found several burgers franchises that we would hear about in the northeast as being all of this and that, but not in your area. Those included in n out butger, jack in the box (for the cheesecake), ....and fatburger. I even found it with coffee.

Before I moved, it was finally seeing sonic and having my mind blown.

So, is there a franchise (food, drink or even just some type of service) that you experienced after years of hearing about them you either had your mibd blown or dream deflated?

Would you go back?

If you haven't had the experience yet, what do you think that it will be like?

people told you that was the standard???????

man, I grew up there and wouldnt dare tell anybody that. anytime that I had went to one I would always leave feeling guilty. You knew that a long camode on the toilet was inevitable, but yeah........the small burgers did taste flavorful and since they were so damn small u ate a lot of them.

that White Castle is the same as a Southern burger chain named Krystal or Krystals.

I've been raised in NYC for the majority of my life and I never dared to even think of pulling out my wallet to purchase anything White Castle related. The smell of the burgers alone was enough to keep me away. The closest I've been to White Castle is watching the first Harold and Kumar flick.

but I was pretty much raised in NYC. I *think* the dreaded smell I referenced in my prior response was from when I was a child. The sole White Castle I've seen here in NYC is the one on Utica Avenue that's been there since I was a little child. I think's I've seen it there for the last 20-25 years now, which I suppose counts for something.

My wife is from there and swears by them. Even gripes about how Krystal's doesn't stack up to WC. I tell her that both Krystal's and WC are not real burgers and aren't what they're hyped to be.

In response to Reply # 0

The first Cookout came here (ATL) about a year ago, and folks lost their minds. I knew they were big in the Carolinas and Virginia, so I was excited when they came here. First few months... lines out the door.

I waited until the hype died down, and they built another one on Ponce. Big let down...

Basically, it's just Zesto's (a nearly defunct ATL franchise) with better shake options.

Now Five Guys, on the other hand, was everything it was hyped up to be.

ive only been to Cookout once during a visit to ATL and I knew nothing of any hype about it. I liked the food.

Five Guys was hyped and I liked the food well enough but it didn't live up to the hype, imo. Kinda like In N Out in that regard.

fuck you.

Moe's - better than Chipotle at creating the SF burrito experience. We need more of them in this area. Well, really we need more SF-style taquerias, period. But I digress.

fuck you.

The shakes are pretty good, burger is just above average. Like you said, overhyped, a little overpriced and too many people.

their burgers are decent but sometimes sit a little weird. why is the floor slippery in every one i go to? there was one on chestnut street in philly where i saw several people fall and i almost ate shit more than once. maybe it's all the goddamn peanut grease. i could do without all the peanuts.

The sandwiches are so thin and pinner and nasty. I got food poisoning at a Panera in San Jose but I already had disliked it. The bread is good though, that Asiago loaf is great and when they had the prawn roll thing those rolls were great for lobster rolls. I fuck with the bread itself and the baked goods are OK, but the stuff off the menu is meager and full of cut corners.

The bakery part is like 3% of the space and the restaurant is all the rest. Their sandwiches got like three slices of prison cold cuts in 'em (I guess if they had four they would turn your stomach) and their soup is "soggy, fucked up, and watery" (c) MJG.

So, I was on vacation in Tampa, and spot one off the highway. I was incredibly excited....

The wings were hot, but I've had hotter. It definitely wasn't worth dragging my family in there, who really wanted something else.

22. "Whataburger, Jack In The Box, and Sonic"
In response to Reply # 0
Mon Oct-05-15 01:03 PM by PoppaGeorge

Whataburger - I was told they had great burgers, let my uncle tell it and they're better than everything. He ate a LOT of Whataburger when he lived in Dallas and the first thing he missed about it when he moved back to Michigan. The few times I had been to Dallas I never got around to going so when I moved to Phoenix and they had Whataburger it was on the schedule of things to try.

I get it... Whataburger is DAMNED good. Good enough that I intentionally limit going there otherwise I'll end up on "My 600lb Life".

Jack In The Box - A number of people told me Jack in the Crack was good. Some said it was really good. Most of those people were in the military and I should have figured that their taste buds had been destroyed by eating trash food during basic training. The very first burger I tried when I got to Phoenix was a Jumbo Jack... And I sat there in my car wondering what the fuck was going on... Obviously I shouldn't have started with something off the value menu, but goddammit this was some wretched ass shit. I actually ate half the thing out of utter disbelief wondering if the next bite was going to turn a corner and hit me with some sort of wonderful flavor. It was like chasing the dragon... Except I never got that first "high" from eating it and was only chasing some sort of flavor to begin with. I threw that thing out the window (no really, I rolled down the window and let the 118 degree heat in and threw the shit out the window), and within 2 minutes was in another JITB drive thru... These things are everywhere in Phoenix. I tried something more "upscale" if you will and got their Ultimate Cheeseburger... This time I didn't wait: I tossed that bitch out the window after two bites.

Lesson learned: Never trust someone in the military to give you advice on fast food.

Sonic - We had been living in Phoenix for 6 years when one day I left the office for lunch, the missus called and asked me to pick up something from a store near the office and I mentioned the store being next to a Sonic. She asked if that was where I was going to eat "Nah... I'm going to Whataburger a block over then I'll stop off by that store". She started rambling on about Sonic's food and I told her I had never eaten there. Shit was like an episode of Spongebob:

http://30.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ll949lhWsH1qhfmrto1_400.jpg

She talked me into going to Sonic instead. I forget what I ordered... And that's just it; Sonic's food is utterly forgettable. It's decent, not bad but not good in the sense that would make you skip over another fast food spot to go eat there (unless it was Hot N Now... Well maybe not Hot N Now but Burger Time for sure).

In response to Reply # 0

For years I had heard about Primanti Bros from Yinzers and thought it would be some good, old-time, traditional shit. It's fucking disgusting. I tried two different sandwiches. One tasted like scrapple, the other had no taste. Both were a weird mix of stale and soggy. It was atrocious. Most of the food in Pittsburgh was terrible (though there were notable exceptions).

Sonic for YEARS would inundated various markets with ads where they did not exist. I thought this was some anomaly limited to So Cal and the Central Coast, but then they did the same thing in Southeastern PA. There were even Facebook groups called "Oh, Sonic, where are thou?" and shit like that. Finally I tried on. GROSS. School cafeteria quality burgers dressed up with weird and nasty sauces. The drinks are as sugary as Dunkin' Donuts' drinks, which is alarming.

Steak N Shake more or less fulfilled expectations. I saw so many ads for it on League Pass that I had to stop in when I got the chance. It was a decent burger and a decent shake.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Primanti's is like a sacred institution to folks from Pittsburgh... kinda like cows are to Hindu's.

We've got a nice lil restaurant scene here, but none of the really good ones are downtown or in the strip (although Kaya and Meat and Potatoes don't suck)

In response to Reply # 0

specifically the one next to the freeway in Mobile, AL. It was just as divey as I thought it would be. My bud asked the waitress for a fork, and she handed it to him by the business end. She was in a pretty bad mood. Furthermore, when we asked for waters to drink, she basically threw the water-filled glasses at us, and somehow they landed upright on the table. Must have been a magic trick of sorts.

It was love at first bite for me. From my interaction with the young lady behind the bulletproof glass, to the delicious half chicken with mild and hot sauce. My GOD I could go for some right now.

I also remember the first time I went to Cali. I saw Jack In The Box and all I kept saying was "Jack In The Box they got the best cheesecake." I aint even want no damn cheesecake but I did get some grub after late night dancing. It was good for that but only that I think. Wild greasy curly fries if I remember correctly.

the chicken is not spicy but it should have plenty of flavor and be served hot as fuck. i have been to ones where it was kind of tepid and bland. maybe not so much the location but the timing, come to think of it. the waffles have a weird way of getting cold fast, i noticed that even with the frozen ones you can buy now (cooking them is much more of a challenge than an Eggo or something). but when the shit comes out right, it's really good IMO.

Everytime I have a layover in Houston that is two hours or more I go to the one there and usually get like a three-pound lobster. The Chilean bass is really good, I'll get both if I haven't eaten all day (usually the case). I was surprised to find they have one in Phoenix. I went a couple times during a work trip. I would definitely recommend it.

but everyone says it's good... and there is one right down the street from my house.

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

... Until I had a toasted sub.

That sub changed my world. Quiznos is my go to destination for gourmet subs.

some people are like "why go to quizno's and pay double for a sandwich as subway?" man, fuuuuuuuuck that. it's like five times the quality, though that speaks more to the nastiness of subway's plastic bread, rubber meats and band-aid cheese. i fuck with quizno's subs over most sub shops, though i noticed there are fewer locations and less variety now. i havent been to one in a while.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.
