"I don't fuck with NYC like that but it CRUSHES L.A. on the food front"

Why is every "L.A. institution" just a slightly above average place with a long line? Why does L.A. Live make the generally mortifying Times Square look like le Champs-Élysées?

Is someone going to come in here and tell me The Pantry is a decent place to eat? We may have to knuckle up. Apple Pan is just a regular-ass greasy spoon, I wouldn't call it a great burger if that Cali loud was screaming it in my ear. Philippe's was good 20 years ago, now it's just a schlock factory of cold beef and soggy bread. Diddy Reese's is a helluva long line for the edible version of Mrs Fields.

Obviously there are some great places to eat in L.A. but the overall quality is pretty suspect and they are extremely spread out by comparison. I could live in NYC for a year and try a new great place every day I would wager. The competition is fierce in both places but NYC is still more the culinary magnet and, I hate to say it, but it has more discerning consumers by a sizable margin.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

It's not a fancy dinner city.

It's a work lunch city. Which is why most of our institutions are greasy spoons. They're great greasy spoons.

Phillippe's and Apple Pan are still great too, fuck that noise.

LA food is wack, period, and expensive in relation to its mediocrity

all that LA is this or that, nah... as a collective of 88 smaller "cities" and really hella diverse under the hipster gentrification sprawl, food is mad mediocre out here

you put Jonathan Gold in any other city and he doesn't become Jonathan Gold.

same with Steph Cha. she's known almost as much for her Yelp account as she is for her novel. she too couldn't be from anywhere else but here.

the food scene here, the real one, is casual to the core, but hella diverse and distinct.

where else can a place like Dino's Chicken in Pico Union exist?

like, what the fuck is that place?

http://www.nileguide.com/destination/blog/los-angeles/files/2010/06/DINO_765.jpg

that's their specialty and it's incredible.

there are hundreds of weird places like that in the city. nah, we ain't got all the Michelin stars and Zagat ratings and hipster chefs with pop-up restaurants like the big Food Cities, but to say the scene here is wack is complete bullshit.

I spent 3 months in LA this winter and would generally have to agree with you....except a few exceptions...as I did have some amazing meals out there

Sugarfish - best sushi I've had outside of Japan

Mexican street food - I've had better tacos from a parking lot in LA than almost any place I've found in NYC

Mendocino Farms - When Liz Lemon said that all people want in life is to sit in peace and eat a sandwich, this is the type of sandwich she was talking about.

Quick n split, and Stout. I've had a lotta high end burgers, so they usually smash what In n out has. I agree that for their range, they're the best. But not overall at all. Even a franchise like Red Robin has some BOMB burgers on deck.

Hardees

Why would you ever go to LA Live?

You must buy big lotion bottles at Costco

.......

I did just have this convo with someone. LA has some awesome places to eat.. Umami shits on most burger spots (My other fav is Fuku) a lot of sushi spots and solid mexican. Places like the nickle diner are awesome greasy spoons

But it has no "great" middle tier. In NY you could just walk in a random Dominican spot and get solid to great chicharon w/o having to read yelp reviews first.

But that is LA in a nutshell a place where 'if you know' you will enjoy it and if your waiting for someone to tell you 'it sucks'

Lol... LA Live

NOBODY claims Pantry is good. Now, Serving spoon? Hell yeah. Pann's? Yep. Even The Flavor Table. AKA a lotta Black spots.

I live in the Blackest Black area in L.A., and it's plenty great spots by me. And it's a WHOOOOLE lot of great Mexican and Asian spots. And we have all the usual high end chains (although I know OKP hates chain restaurants, smh).

And the seafood??? Pleeeenty bomb spots, for "straight out the water + seasoning" seafood or Black/Cajun style.

I will agree that they're hella spread out, but the city itself is spread out as hell, so you might have to drive to Long Beach, or to Hollywood, or Santa Monica, or The South Bay, depending on taste.

something about the shipping ingredients aren't fresh
i know fresh fast food oxymoron
but cold burgers and fries are the norm

but yes if you think outside the box and take chances on places
very very pleasant surprises

Imho it's why our south American and southern food sucks..the base tastes are due to the freshness of the ingredients...collards ain't the same after they've been thrown into a refrigerated truck for a week until it gets here.

That said, in addition to the cultural melting pot there's a relationship ny'ers have with food that you don't find anywhere else. Probably because eating out is such a big part of the social aspect here (cause we too busy to cook and our kitchens are as big as closets)

i forgot what i was watching and apparently even in texas it adapted with whatever ingredients it could locally get and to local tastes

also explains folks putting nasty ass cumin in things

so glad its not truly mexican

but anyways the carts are awesome even knowing it very likely even better than those
i still haven't had carne asada sounds awesome

when ppl laud food scenes in various cities they're talking about places other than these types.

you went to tourist joints, homie. and they're fine for what they are. but when ppl praise Chicago's restaurant scene they're not including those places you used as examples.

they're talking places like these:

https://www.zagat.com/l/chicago/top-food-in-chicago

http://chicago.eater.com/maps/chicagos-michelin-starred-restaurants-mapped-2

yes, I'll go first:

-Cafe Brasil (the one on Washington, not Venice, only cause I aint ate at the one on Venice)
-The Boiling Crab (Koreatown)
-Mercado (Santa Monica) contemporary Mexican
-Merkato (Little Ethiopa)
-Ms. Coley (NoHo) Jamaican
-Ayara (off Speulveda near LAX) Thai
-Alibi or A-Frame (bof on Washington, and only for the beef tacos or short rib, yes Roy Choi shit. But really his restaurant at the Line aint shit to sneeze at)
-Ackee Bamboo (Lemeirt Park) Jamaican
Free Range LA Chicken Burgers (kinda "pricey" tho)

Chains:
Gyu Kaku
Cheesecake Factory
Yard House
Fat Burger
In & Out

LA has great food, whether its the taco truck or the top spots.

even the fruit stand situation is killing anything on the east coast.

eat a Umami burger and get your life, fam.

all of this looks crazy though https://instagram.com/losangeles_eats/

and one of the best meals I had in years was at Barton G in West Hollywood

Harold & Belles is better than any cajun/seafood place I know of in New York
