they weren't enough to sustain the biz model in this area.
the joints had a lot of traffic at first...but it died out.
it's just tough wrapping one's mind around paying $4+ for a bowl when one can go buy a whole box for around that price, if not less. it won't become a regular thing - like getting a breakfast sandwich or coffee from McD's/Dunkin/Starbux/et al. a $4 bowl of cereal isn't filling enough to be a meal at lunchtime on a regular basis. if anything it's a snack. a $4 snack. a novelty.
i think the cereal bar thing is a good idea but it needs to be included in some joint that offers other, more attractive items that one would seek to purchase regularly. like if McD's or Dunkin or any other fast-foody breakfast joint had a cereal bar i can see that working out for them. but as a stand-alone biz? i dunno.
the joint failed here but seems to still be in biz in other locales. so maybe it failed here due to some logistical or internal issue. having been inside one of the stores (i didn't eat b/c of the cost) i don't see that model working out but it's been going for yrs now. maybe you're right.

quick search reveals price of a box of cereal is between 2 and 7 dollars
but then you could argue that a dozen eggs coast 3-5 dollars and its crazy that an egg sandwich is 3-5 dollars (i mean, sure with bread , labor and condiments)

a dozen eggs costs about $1.50.
a breakfast sandwich w/eggs has more going on that just the eggs - there are other ingredients (often bread, meat and cheese products) plus there is a fair amount of labor involved. i can justify paying $3 or $4 for a breakfast sandwich.
but a bowl of cereal where i'm putting in all of the labor and the only ingredients are the cereal(s), milk (it may be flavored, depending), and some toppings (various syrups, candies, fruit, et al)...i'm not paying $4+ (depending on toppings, milk and cereal a bowl can cost as much as $15, btw). other ppl seem willing to do so...not me. i dunno that there are enough ppl willing to pay those prices for a bowl of cereal on a regular basis to sustain that biz model on a wide scale. i can't tell if the joint is open anywhere but if so there's a location in the DFW Airport and in a hospital in Virginia. this is after the joints had been open in other places like here in Illinois and out in Cali, i think. so i dunno. i don't see it myself but the world is full of biz ideas i didn't see that have worked out great. *shrugs*

at these cereal bars, you still have to make your own bowl of cereal. sure you have more options but you still have to do it yourself. at the one in BK, you can get two cereals, your choice of milk, some toppings for $6. it comes in a box and then you put it all together to eat. and I mean, it makes sense, you dont' want them giving you a bowl of cereal with milk already in it but sheesh...I still gotta do all the work.
