"Successful White GH Actress Trolls Viola Davis' Speech, then Apologizes"

i've watched Nancy Lee Grahn be AMAZING on GH and it was highly disappointing to see her say some shit like this...i really hope she learns from this.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/nancy-lee-grahn-viola-davis-emmy-speech_56000ba3e4b00310edf7ae62

General Hospital's Nancy Lee Grahn Apologizes After Criticizing Viola Davis' Emmys Acceptance Speech

Viola Davis made history at Sunday night's Emmy Awards when she became the first black woman to take home the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series trophy. Her acceptance speech, which touched upon the lack of opportunity for women of color, was poignant, emotional and empowering.

So it's a serious wonder why "General Hospital" actress Nancy Lee Grahn used that moment to criticize Davis.

"Im a f**king actress for 40 yrs. None of us get respect or opportunity we deserve. Emmys not venue 4 racial opportunity. ALL women belittled," she wrote in a since-deleted tweet captured by BuzzFeed.

She also took issue with Davis quoting Harriet Tubman ("In my dreams, I see a line. Over that line, I see green fields and lovely flowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me over that line, but I can't seem to get there no how, I can't seem to get over that line").

After receiving backlash for her comments, Grahn attempted to apologize and respond to her critics.

She wrote a lengthier response in an extended tweet:

I apologize for my earlier tweets and now realize I need to check my own privilege. My intention was not to take this historic and important moment from Viola Davis or other women of color but I realize that my intention doesn't matter here because that is what I ended up doing. I learned a lot tonight and I admit that there are still some things I don't understand but I am trying to and will let this be a learning experience for me.

Unfortunately, you never know who is sincere and what is PR spin.

Either way, she admitted she was wrong.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

While obviously sexism is Hollywood is a 98,281 ton nicotine smoking elephant in the room, belittling someones personal experiences racial bias as wrong and it's an issue for 'all women' is just fucking dumb and just showcases white entitlement, even if you are a woman.

The cynic in me wonders if she was merely parroting back some of the
criticism thrown her way, but I'm also heartened by her choosing to
make her accountability/ apology public.

That WAS a pretty shameful display of bitter boots.

she basically the lead actress on GH and has been for over 20 years and is VERY well paid for her steady, dependable job.

and it's not like she's tried to break away from soaps and failed...she done virtually no other projects for a long time..like not even indie films/projects which are so easy for any name actress to get

so what room does she have to complain at all?

The sexism in the entertainment industry is so blatantly obvious to anyone and I know that you know all this.....but women have to be beautiful to have a career. Good looking men have an advantage too....but let's face it, men like Phillip Seymour Hoffman can have a successful career without looking like a model. It's incredibly rare for a woman to do something like that in the equivalent. And even if they do (like Kathy Bates or someone like that) they have a pretty rigid ceiling in exactly how far they can go in terms of accolades and awards.

So she's a victim too. I think that she's made the mistake of neglecting intersectionality and her back-pedalling seemed to acknowledge that.

That means we got these motherfuckers in check. They can't say wild out of pocket shit without fear of repercussions. It's good stuff. Ppl will never stop putting their feet in their mouths in the public sphere but at least now they don't get away with it as often as they once did.

I think she was either reminded of or made aware of the intersectional discrimination that black woman face in the entertainment industry. So she reflected on her own struggle....and now sees that although she shares PART of that struggle with Viola Davis....there's another part that she doesn't share.

Doesn't sound worthless or trivial to me.

But as much as can be achieved by any exchange of ideas about racism and sexism....she seems to be more aware of intersectional discrimination after listening to other people's objections to her tweets. It doesnt' sound like she's apologizing for having an opinion. I think she's saying that her perspective has changed a bit. Which isn't a bad thing is it?

"I had a valid point but I expressed it badly. Ur right. I apologize"

She's backtracking but still believes the bulk of what she said.

To me, that renders the "apology" pretty much worthless.

This part sounds like it came from a publicist (a black one at that):

"I apologize for my earlier tweets and now realize I need to check my own privilege. My intention was not to take this historic and important moment from Viola Davis or other women of color but I realize that my intention doesn't matter here because that is what I ended up doing. I learned a lot tonight and I admit that there are still some things I don't understand but I am trying to and will let this be a learning experience for me."

Just say what you mean and stick by that shit. The hell with people on Twitter. Now if Viola Davis or any other black actress takes issue with it and it leads to a personal conversation between the two of them and amends being made, that's more genuine and I can rock with it.

But other than that, nah. Keep it. I don't clap for forced apologies.

I didn't know that could be said non sarcastically.

She isn't recognize as such because people assume her thoughts couldn't be useful beyond slavery. But she has speeches with concepts that are as present today as they where when she gave them about the human condition. People should be quoting her like they quote Lincoln or King...

No one would ever say, "don't go quoting Voltaire, you ain't in the enlightenment."

fighting against enslavement. I think people forget that she lived until 1913. Also, talking about slavery is "tacky?" I can't...that history is an integral part of the Black experience. No Black person should be shamed into not talking about it.

She should have known better.

I'm all for not caring about white tears, but you don't get to use a nuanced quote from a woman ONLY known for her involvement with slavery and compare it to being an actress. Its REALLY no comparison and its an insult to everyone. Take you and I being black away from this. Its cringe inducing.

And you do care about what white folks think. Your reply reeks of respectability politics. I'm glad Viola stayed true to her heritage.

The context in which she referenced the line spoke of sisterhood, in that she wasn't able to get "across the line" on her own, but her sisters have helped pull each other over the line. At least that's what it said to me.

That in and of itself is beautiful.

However, the reference of being where white people are as the measure of success, making it, and achieving a dream... makes me uncomfortable, although most of us have been guilty of it (including myself at times)

"I seemed to see a line, and on the other side of that line were green fields, and lovely flowers, and beautiful white ladies..."

Why are we not of the mindset that we should build up our side of "the line" so beautifully, strong, and appealing that those "beautiful white women" desire our arms to be outstretch to pull THEM over? In many ways they want to be us anyway.

So while I'm very happy for Viola, the fact that she's caught up in "slave mode" to a degree troubles me.

Very true. Tubman was never one to measure herself against white folk. She was all about shaming and holding up a mirror up to people that SEEMED like they would be on the side of black people. Tubman has many quotes like that...Like u said. She was the queen of shade....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....
