"Is there such a thing as an acquired taste?"

It has been my lifelong belief that there is not. There are just things that taste bad and you force yourself to like them.

Kids have expectations for chocolate. Here's what they look like when it's dark.

I hated diet soda as a child, now I can't drink regular. Is there a thing you now love that you once hated? Or are the faithful caviar fans fulla roe?

That doesn't sound like it started to empirically taste better, so much as you came to accept the bad flavor and maybe mix it with better flavors, but your tongue is aware that it would not choose alcohol without the perks.

Much like exercise, we do it for a reason. But in and of itself, it is not rewarding. If you didn't see any results from it, you'd probably stop.

ie i started drinking henny, jack with coke, then eventually used less coke. then no coke. then no ice.

Similarly with beer i could only drink light stuff, but eventually the light stuff was too weak. It had nothing to do with buzz/taste because i like the taste of liquor.

No amount of peer pressure or status symbolism or deferred gratification is gonna make a kid eat nasty shit.

Dark chocolate.

Brussel sprouts.

Okra.

Ambergris.

Lemons.

Their response is objective. OURS is influenced by culture. Therefore, cultured peoples pretend ambergris should fetch a premium. It's whale puke. Plain and simple.

Most kids these days are eating a ton of processed and really sweet food. So yeah, if they are used to eating sweet milk chocolate then dark chocolate will taste bitter to them. But their taste buds are completely thrown off because of what they are used to eating.

It's just a moment of "WTF??!!" Then like a second of almost pain. And then they look at their parent like "wtf did you just give me, asshole??"

Every single time.

That's not from bias. That's pure input/feedback.

But maybe we get desensitized until we forget that strong citrus is actually painful to the salivary glands. You can feel them dessicate and tug the nerves in your mandibular plexus.

They're not objective, they've already been programmed by the culture of their mom.

If you are trying something new and it doesn't taste like anything you are used to eating, then it will taste "bad" to you at that time. If you get used to it and start to appreciate the taste, it's not that you forced yourself to like something bad, it's just that you have grown to appreciate something that was once foreign to you.

A kid's reaction to quality dark chocolate when they are used to super sweet milk chocolate is pretty similar to an adult's reaction to a quality single malt scotch when they have only been drinking sweet mixed drinks. Their sense of taste has been clouded by drinking a ton of sugar, and until they have trained their palate to appreciate more subtle tastes then food/drinks that aren't sweet will taste "bad".

I think the acquired taste comes in with stronger tastes. There might be a strong taste thats hard to handle at first but there's elements of it you like. AFter a while, you become desensitized to the 'strongness' of it.

In addition to what you said about the taste buds, I read a book about two months ago titled Gut that mentions that the active bacteria in your small intestines actually change according to what foods you normally eat. I would imagine diet along with ones location and environment would change what one's small intestinal bacteria consists of.

I used to love hot, spicy stuff but now (at 33) my tongue can't even handle "medium" hot wings. It burns and my tongue will actually hurt for an extended time well-after I've eaten the food.

On the flip side, unlike when I was younger, I love dark chocolate. Extra-dark even better. Hoppy beer. Like, even comically over-the-top hoppy stuff I get down with. Coffee I used to hate, but now I can drink with minimal cream or sugar.

my childhood knee jerk flavor responses never change. So that leads me to believe that's my real tongue. Just like my childhood ears were my real ears and I'll never have them back.

babies who are breast fed by mothers who eat a wide variety of foods - which changes the flavor of the breast milk - are going to be more accepting of different tastes than babies who are formula fed when they start solids

and people's taste change over time

i dunno why that's difficult to believe

US kids are pushed to eat sweet things and pushed onto cereals/milk/sugared foods from a young age. Other countries have completely different pediatric nutrition guides and kids eat different foods. Some foods I'm not sure people even like necessarily because of the taste as in the flavor of the food itself but the salt/sugar content on top of the taste of whatever it is they are eating and how it's prepared.

as an aside -- i think most people who don't like brussel sprouts haven't ever cooked them properly. brussel sprouts shouldn't be soggy and waterlogged, as most of us probably first tasted them growing up.

Tasted like what I imagine licking an armpit would taste like when I first tried them roughly five or so years ago. Now I eat them 5-6 times a week.

41. "coffee...black or otherwise WITHOUT sugar."
In response to Reply # 0

I used to find the taste of unsweetened coffee utterly repulsive. I couldn't understand how so many folks willingly drank the stuff black. My joe needed have at least two teaspoons of sugar added before I even considered it palatable.

sometime over the last couple of months though, I started to get fascinated with the technical/geeky/artisan side of coffee culture. particularly home brew methods that called the use of whole beans, and required close attention to water quality and brewing times. real nerd sh/t.

was fascinating to read discussions where peeps swooned over the natural tastes of exotic coffees, and exchanged brewing methods that didn't have a mention of sugar in sight.

curious to find out for myself, I bought a grinder, press, some whole beans, and started doing coffee experiments in my kitchen.
over the past 6 months or so, I've gained a real appreciation for the natural taste of coffee...minus sugar. I do add cream from time to time, though. but I'm amazed at how good coffee can tastes on its own. highly doubt that I'll go back to adding sugar like I used to, it's just unnecessary.

it's crazy how we disregard natural flavors, and add sugar to many foods in an effort to satisfy our immature taste buds. this is mostly an American thing, right?

Hated the nuggets, barely touched the fries, insisted we stop and get a Happy Meal at McD's for her instead.

so when I was a kid I HATED McDonalds because they put mustard on the cheeseburger.

I always made them order a cheeseburger without mustard and it used to take forever for them to make that shit.
