"my 'friend' bought me a puppy for my birthday"
Wed Aug-19-15 08:58 AM by MzOnyxVI

i've never had a pet before in my life

she's adorable and is an amazing companion

but if this thing don't stop pissing on my floors?!

LAWD.

i don't know what to do!

i put down pee pads, she tears them to shreds and then pees somewhere else

someone suggested in-home training; i'm leaning towards that but it's sooo expensive and this clearly wasn't a budgeted item seeing as how she was a complete and total surprise

any tips? suggestions? what do i dooooooooo?

she's a 3 mo old chihuahua. we named her Sassi.

EDIT - i mentioned wanting a puppy a while ago. i didn't think he would really do it. i asked for huaraches for my birthday. i got a chihuahua instead. lmao.

unless its already known that you wanted one.

Its like surprising someone with a child for their birthday.

potty training a dog is a real commitment, especially a young/small dog. You basically have to wait until you know its its time for her to go to the bathroom, putting her near her pad, and wait for her to so you can reward her/ or move her to the proper place. Waiting out a dog can take hours.

If you can't commit to training her I would highly recommend paying a professional.

We have a dog and the first few months were so tough. he's now properly trained and hasn't had an accident in months. Its improved our relationship and you'll adore the little one even more.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

You bout to be committed for the nest 7-15 years.

Now if you get the huaraches, you have to worry about them being chewed.

according to what I've read online.

She doesn't eliminate in her crate; she does really well with that.

I go home around 1130 to walk her and let her out, and then as soon as I get home from work we head out, and then she's out of her crate until it's time for bed.

She mustve been in a crate previously because she does really well there.

The only issue I'm having really is that she won't use her pee pads.

it sounds like you're doing everything correct!

the only thing i'd suggest is changing the feeding times & if all else
send him to a kennel to be trained

good luck

In response to Reply # 0

I can't stress a structured schedule enough when it comes to training dogs.

Eat and drink water at the same time every day, if possible. Go outside afterwards.

Every little snack or sip of water afterwards requires outside time again.

I've only had her for a few days now but I was allowing her to eat/drink at her leisure; that has since stopped.

I'm worried about what I'll find when I go home during lunch today; she has ALWAYS pooped during our morning walks - she didn't today.

In response to Reply # 0

First pee pad take the absorbent part and rub it in some of the dogs pee. So next accident soak up with the pad. Leave the pad out in the same area as the accident and let her smell it. When she uses it get the next one and rub it on the wet pad again. Also gradually move the pad to the location you want it to stay in. Keep scenting the pad until she starts to look for it. Each time she uses it praise her.

You can also keep her with you on a leash so that you can watch her. If she has free rein she's going to destroy your house and piss on it to solidify her dominance when she's finished.

If you're not actively playing with her keep her on a leash (6' to 7') with you or put her in the crate. Make sure she can reach the pee pad, has regular access to water and give her toys to play with. When she goes to pee pick her up and put her on the pad. If she goes to tear up something take it from her and give her one of her toys. Praise her for doing the right thing and avoid "no" as much as possible. When she's pad trained you can give her more free time.

If you get training ask them if they can commands like "drop it" "leave it" and "off" with the basic commands.

Good luck.

Thank you so much!

And that's literally what it seems like she's doing; peeing everywhere to establish her dominance.

I move a pad to where she's just finished urinating, she goes somewhere else.

Tell the dog what you want it to do instead of what you don't and use "no" sparingly. That's why you use commands like drop it, leave it, and off.

You can also add things like back and pillow (if they have a pillow). If you want them to do something give it a name. When you're saying no what is it that you really want them to do? Even "sit" is better than no. It's redirection as opposed to voiced frustration.

My youngest kid says no to my dog so much the dog thinks it's a part of her name. That's pretty indicative of what lots of dog owners do. Then they think the dog doesn't mind instead of realizing it's incompletely trained.

A dog will assign a meaning to "no" if you do not. That could be anything like run around, play, keep doing what i'm doing, get anxious and scared, etc.
Most people yell out no and the dog responds to the tone of voice, but eventually the get used to it and it becomes ineffective.
