Didn't like Straight Outta Compton or Niggaz4Life now or then (granted I was only like 5 years old then)

But Cube's and Easy's solo albums go.

Hell I got a lot of respect for Ren. Love Cube and respect Dre. I love Easy's solo stuff. I can't say I'm a fan of NWA and for most people in NY we never got on board with it. It was just too outlandish for folks on the East Coast.

The misogyny and homophobia and promotion of gang violence in their group and solo work put me off. As did their real world antics. So I didn't buy their albums but I heard all of them. Their music was the soundtrack of my teen rebellion - for example I was 16 years old when The Chronic dropped. The older I got and the more I learned in school and about the world and myself the less patience I had for their b/s.

fuck you.

I didn't because I wasn't all for the cursing and shooting and hoes and busters etc that Nggz4life threw down. I liked "We Want Easy" and I liked the 1st Album because it was actually about something. The first record. Everything after was too far gone for my tastes.

I was an ICE CUBE GUY ALL DAY with Death Certificate. Lethal Injection was cool then I kinda moved on from him also. I was a big Ren guy because he was lyrical.

The D.O.C. was by faaar and away my favorite out of that camp. Far and away!

Nobody does it better was my shit. I don't even think I bought NFL. By that time I was much more into Native Tongues stuff. But the 100 miles and running ep was my fave release from them and the go to breaking song of it's day.

I can't condone that shit now and I feel like I'm kinda just processing that recently. I hadn't really dusted any of that shit off in a long time and revisiting it makes me realized how much I've changed. I now realize that I over-intellectualized that shit in a lame attempt to appease my moral standards with the visceral appreciation I had of the music. I had a bunch of bullshit arguments about them subversively making a political statement. Nah, for the most part they were selling glorified street life shit to dweebs who thought gangbanging was cool from afar. That's really how they made most of their money.

sake of my pubescent living, who allowed this to be the very first fuckin song on the album?

I had just bought it, unwrapped it and was about to put it in my ever handy walkman (i'm lying it was some GPX portable tape player with just a stop, ffw, and play button but back then we called 'em all WALKMANs)...Anyway, my moms (younger but white friend) says " go head and put it in the car stereo....

Next thing I know " You see the mailman's dicks way down your wifes throat" is blastin through the speakers and my mom and her friends are driving and crying in laughter.

we finally get back home and my moms friend asks me to "dub" her a copy of the tape.

And so began my love affair with Slick Rick.

When I first heard Eazy I didn't get it but I eventually started to get it

I was a fan when straight outta Compton dropped but I've always had a sort of love / hate relationship with it with periods of disavowing it

So I can appreciate them now but its bittersweet because I was sincerely hopeful when conscious hip hop got popular and we were wearing medallions.

When the Chronic dropped all of that was over, but nothin but a g thing was the jam tho.

aunt in Upper Marlboro, MD. I had my own room in her house with cable - The Jukebox network would play "Straight Outta Compton" like every hour. I persuaded my great aunt to buy me the NWA tape. Funny enough, K Mart only sold "clean" versions, so I was disappointed to find that Fuck Tha Police wasnt on my tape.
When I got back to Bmore, I walked to the record store and bought the explicit version.

I didnt listen to efil4zaggin until much later, like about 5 years ago. The shit was horrible. I'll agree, Dre's production was on point and Ren stepped his bars up. But shit like 'findem fuckem flee" and "automobile" and "niggas 4 life" were unlistenable.

I fucked with Dre and Cube's solo shit though. And really, I only messed with "we want eazy" and "Radio" of Eazy's joint.

Channel 37 on United Artists Cable. That was really what got me into hip hop as a kid. Rap still wasn't played a lot on radio (at least in Baltimore) in the late 80s. My older sister once ran up a huge cable bill ordering "Hey Young World" about 10 times.

I went to see SOC this weekend and was trying to explain to a younger date about it and how I knew the songs, and she kept shouting me down that there was only "The Box" which was its mid 90s successor.

Streets won't let me chill.

and then discovered NWA through Ice Cube as a point of entry. So I liked the NWA stuff that included Ice Cube and rode with TeamCube when it was Cube v. NWA.

It's kind of interesting though because I feel like there was a strong OKP contingency who were very vocally against misogynist hip-hop. I even feel like Biggie got a cold reception here in the early days of OKP.

It's a position that come to be seen as corny over time (I remember Mos Def and them running away form the conscious label) and that contingency doesn't seem to be around OKP like it was back in the day for better for worst.

Both in terms of quality and in terms of impact, because yes you had things moving in a direction that heightened awareness but did it do it in the right way? I am still not sure. It seems like this film is a good opportunity to watch it, listen to their stuff and reevaluate now all these years later. Maybe I will. But their stuff never really moved me and of course sounds pretty dated now.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I liked them better with Ice Cube, who I listened to a whole lot more in that time.

But I fucked HEAVILY with MC Ren's "Kizz My Black Azz" EP

i was a stone cold east coast hip hop head and real provincial back then. So all my hip hop experience revolved around LL, PE, Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, EPMD and such. Plus they didn't get any significant radio play on my radio so the exposure was limited to seeing them on an occasional video.

They were "those cats" and i couldn't really get into anything that wasn't east coast back then.

But i was definitely a Cube and Dre fan, when they broke off from the group.

The Deep Cover joint was the first west coast song i really loved. And The Chronic and Death Certificate stayed on repeat.

But knew all the history by 93-94 once Real Muthaphukkin G'z came out. I didn't listen to the entire debut album start to finish until 2007, and I felt it was completely underrated. We always talked about Chronic and Doggystyle, and I felt this album was damn near as good, just that it was older and sounded older.

I didn't even hear "Alwayz into somethin" til like High School, 2000-2001. You just never heard those songs on L.A. Radio after I started listening, although we heard songs like "Pay ya dues" alll the time

That album was THE SHIT when it dropped.

the production, cussing, slang... totally new to us.

People in here either too young, lying or revising history cause they don't want to admit they liked this misogynistic RAP music when it dropped

Their second album is almost unlistenable even though the beats are amazing. Their "solo" albums are cemented their legacy more effectively than their actual albums tbh.

"They used to call me Baby Luke....but now? The whole damn 2 Liiiive Crew."

I was with my older cousin and was like damm which one should I get?
the one with the dude pointing a gun and a explicit lyrics sticker
or the one with 2 dudes dancing one wearing a shirt with 2 and the other with Hype?

Like I said I was 12 so it wasn't that hard to decide
got home, put the tape in my walkman and it was a wrap. I'd never heard that much cursing, gunshots, and anti-drug message before.

To this day I've never heard 2 Hype

they were clean, corny and fun but those songs were funky as shit.

Full Force laced those dudes with some nice dance shit. I loved that whole Heavy D, Kid n Play R&B ish shit.
