I have never observed the Williams with their natural hair on public display. People tend to publically display the things they are proud of. As far as I know they aren't of a faith or culture that advocates public concealment of ones hair-- therefore draw whatever conclusion that seems fit.

and as a black woman with hair, i can tell you that sometimes its more about not wanting to think about it...wanting to have the least maintenance option possible so that time and attention can be paid to things that are more important (i.e., practicing for Grand Slams or rehearsing for a sold-out concert)

kinda like how i wore synthetic braids all the time as a new mom because i didn't want to spend time doing my hair every morning..time that needed to be spent with my new baby. it was for expedience and not a sense of shame about my hair

I mean, it's not like I really care....but it crosses my mind when I hear black woman say 'it would take so much maintenance'.....i wonder to myself 'well maybe that's just a continuation of the point....the natural hair isn't considered acceptable unless it's been so carefully prepared and maintained'. Meaning....it's still not really 'natural' per se if it takes that much work.

My SO struggles with this. I feel like she looks good when she gets out of bed with no combing, no maintenance. She thinks i'm crazy.

to wash and style my natural hair, for it look decent for two days that is IF weather permits it and I'm skilled enough to do the style right. Im not doing that once a week.

Plus if you're in the interview job/hunt process its better to keep hair as "conservative" as possible until you get the job.
