Christie's answers in that exchange had more substance, and were more based in actual experience, but empty zingers always win out in these debates. He can say anything and it's like "you hugged him tho"

He's not intelligent enough to make that leap when put on the spot. He really should have made it a positive so that people would have made the leap that if he is willing to put partisan politics aside to make sure that the people of his state got what they needed after a disaster, he would do the same for Americans. But he's either not that smart, or he's afraid the Republican constituents are too dumb for that logic.

he knows he's suspect with the base, he's too chickenshit to try to explain how weight the of the situation, and what was needed was common sense to anyone with half a brain and half a heart. but this is the republican primary crowd we're talking about. Even if he explains his side, or that there were actual humans lives at stake, or that this is how actual leadership works, it's gonna be like "why did you have to hug him so much?"
