"Windows 10."

Anyone upgrade yet?
I'm very impatiently waiting for the download to pop up.
My laptop died about 2 weeks ago. Just got a new one... preloaded with windows 8. Which is one of the worst OSs ever created. But knowing that 10 was a few days from release and free I went ahead and got the computer.
So has anyone upgraded yet? Thoughts so far?

Is it under a Gig? Gotta be crazy from a bandwidth standpoint from Microsoft's POV, but I suppose they have the shake things up from their perspective as well.

on his personal laptop

He's running it on a Dell Latitude, and it's pretty snappy.

It crashed when he tried to use Cortana, but I think it's just that it didn't recognize the mic hardware.

I have to update my son's laptop tonight. Hoping it's as painless.

asking random questions. Feels very futuristic.

Yeah I know Siri can do that but very different to do it without pushing a button and just speaking up in your home.

All that to say Cortana could be cool.

I recommend you switch to a wired network if you intend to really use this feature. Over my wireless connect, this was less than stellar.

It worked fine for me over wireless. it's clearly a bit compressed (closer to watching one of the GameDVR recordings) but I didn't have any issues with it, with both my Xbox and laptop on my 5G WiFi network.

I wasn't a huge critic of windows 8 like everyone else, I mean I kinda got used to metro after a while, but when I clicked that start menu it felt like eating a slice from a pizza joint you hadn't been to in a while, I mean it felt...right. Things you need are right there on hand on the start menu. The interface is crisper, I mean click on that calendar for god's sake, that 'task view' at the bottom that replaces alt-tab, it all looks crisp and professional.

I'm still puttering about it, but If anything, it's best selling point is how easy-like-a-sunday-morning it is compared to win 8.

In response to Reply # 16

was how you ended up with a lot of stuff split between metro/desktop UI.

and there was no real way around that.

I like 10 a lot, not sure if I understand why the WiFi bit is on by default, and I've had issues with getting snap to work the way I want but it's pretty good.

as with any OS, I'd advise anyone who is happy using what they're using to wait before upgrading.

and so it will mean that fanboys will talk up win 10 as the best thing since sliced bread, but if people don't give a fuck bout OS's like that then it won't really seem like that much of a transition.

I think this system was really meant to sop up the people still on win 7, and for them I think they should upgrade. It will be a more comfortable pair of shoes.

I set up win8 for 3 older people who could use Win7 perfectly fine who just couldn't figure out how to get around Win8 (people with touch screen monitors faired a little better).

Mainly because of need to switch back and forth between Metro and the Desktop and the settings were just scattered in so many different places.

Win10 seems to solve many of those problems.

but anyway, i understand what you're saying. i'm not nerdy enough to be into the Microsoft vs. Apple thing. i'm no MS fanboy though i prefer PCs. i understand it as a personal preference - i don't care that some other ppl prefer Apple while i prefer PCs. just like i don't care if other ppl dig Droids while i dig the iPhone. on the contrary - i think it's great that we have so much choice and that most of us can find hardware running w/the OS we prefer.

and yes, it was very much, if you don't have a touch screen, you got none of the benefits and just drawbacks.

win10 splits the difference a lot better.

to me the problem there wasn't win8 being bad (specifically) but it ending up on computers that weren't equipped to use it.

The xbox app works great and I can stream pretty much anything except for tv to my computer now. The games don't look half bad for being streamed. Of course it works so much better with Ethernet.

For me that's a big deal because I'd much rather stream to twitch while at my computer than to set everything up through my xbox.

Played around with a few settings, got that annoying long Cortana bar off and substituted it with a smaller button

I'll play around with it more today.

This allows you to install it early without waiting for the rollout

If you're upgrading from 7 or 8 just pick the 32 or 64 bit version depending on what you have now and it takes you through everything. Very simple and very quick.

My biggest problem with 8 was the start menu and having to split the screen between apps and the main desktop.

I've also been anti-Explorer for sometime now, but might start using Edge.

Much cleaner experience with this update.

Installed 10 and I kept getting internal_power_error. Apparently windows installed the wrong driver for my graphics card. So I followed the internet instructions and disabled my (amd) card and searched for the updated drivers. It was the most up to date one. So I updated the driver for the Intel one. Which worked. Until I got another unexpected restart. Accidentally uninstalled my amd card completely. But everything was running sooo slow. So I put the installation bundle on a USB and tried to reinstall 10 that way. A clean install I thought might work. But that failed. Haven't been able to get into windows at all. Trying to install from the usb again.

Can someone help me?

Looks like my graphics card is incompatible. I reinstalled it after I finally got windows up and running and went back to getting the internal_power_error. Disabled the card again. And now it disabled my trackpad. Downloading the driver for that right now.

I am beyond frustrated. I think I've got a windows 7 installation disc around here somewhere...

In response to Reply # 45

Not sure if you've tried it but I'd uninstall the card and then install again once the update is done.

Yesterday when I updated my resolution was jacked, I waited until everything loaded from the install then did a restart and it worked fine.

Like dude above me I'd run the auto detect after you install again and try getting your drivers that way.

First I've seen this issue and I'd have to see some logs to tell you anything else. Give it a shot though and keep us updated.

It seems this is a common problem. I found multiple entries about it in a google search and there's a reddit thread about it in r/windows.

I uninstalled the entire card, then installed Windows, then installed the latest driver on the amd website and then the error came back. So it seems there's just no fix yet.

And now I just realized that my function/playback control keys don't work. WTF. Reinstalled the driver for that...

Think I'll just update the bios, that should help, right?

It wouldn't hurt to update the bios but I'm thinking that may not be the problem.

If your issue with the card comes up after the drivers are installed then it may be on AMD's side and nothing you can do. I switched to Nvidia myself and couldn't be happier.

If we can find out exactly whats causing that error then maybe it just takes some configuring until the fix is released. I almost want to tell you to try installing an older driver to see what happens.

I see a name, thing or person while surfing the web and I was initially annoyed that I couldn't select, right click and send to search in a new browser windows like I would do in chrome.

However it did have a "Ask Cortana" in the right click menu and that did a search of sorts and a little information box popped up and was easy to get rid of. Actually eaiser than the right click search feature I loved.

Still should have right click search though but it did force me try this new feature.

Don't really understand why the sound panel isn't with the control panel, rather you have to right click on the speaker volume icon in the right hand corner. Beyond that, 10 is decent no complaints.

Unless you have an enterprise version of Win10, you can't disable Telemetry.

Even if you opt out of WiFi Sense M$ still states that, because Skype and Outlook.com are Microsoft products, they still have every right to peruse or collect your contacts at will.

and that's just a tiny amount of shit they're doing.

>
>You might as well go off the grid at this point.

I'm sticking to Win7 on my laptop and Vista on my Windows desktops. I also maintain Linux and OpenBSD desktops where anything like this would be caught and yanked out.

Older OSes still work just fine so I'll keep using them for my music and whatnot.

In response to Reply # 0

I think the way windows should justify it's existence is by being the homebase to all my computing. I don't fully trust the cloud. All the pictures I take on my phone, it's cool that they are uploaded to the cloud but I'd also like them to be backed up to my desktop as soon as I step foot into my home network. Same for music, documents etc. Besides, all that stop won't fit on a phone anyway.

Google is pissing me off by no longer apparently supporting Picasa and pushing all my desktop photos to the Google Photo. It's nice to have a cloud backup of all my photos but they aren't the same quality as what resides on my home computer. MS is shooting themselves in the foot if they don't put out a picasa killer.

And while I may upgrade my phone every 18 months, my desktop should be around for a few years given upgrades every now and then.

All that to say, man can not make it on cloud and mobile phones alone. There is still a need for a desktop (or laptop).
