I definitely think it's a trend that was kicked into high gear when Curren$y and Wiz Khalifa sparked off, they were/are always going on about other people's bitches. Or maybe it's Fabolous' fault, but I can't say that you really hear his influence in anyone other than maybe Big Sean, who's definitely out there stealing bitches. Trey Songz has also been calling himself Mr. Steal Yo Girl forever and made it a mainstay in pop-R&B.
but I mentioned 50 Cent because I can't believe that 50 never kicked a line about stealing somebody's girl and yet he acted so disappointed in the current scene for sinking to that level. I just couldn't build up the motivation to spend an hour or two listening to prime suspects in his catalog.

I even tried to start a tongue-in-cheek list about it where I'd overanalyze the motivations behind the lines, but i let it fall off for a long time and then when I tried to bring it back recently I just didn't have the writer's motivation to add many more and now it's starting to rot again.

truth be told I was wondering too. I think it's the genre's version of kicking sand in a guy's face knowing he won't do much and as a result look silly in front of any woman or women he might be with.

I have always thought it a strange feature of Hip-hop where we actively listen to music that talks down to us. Our favorite songs involve dudes telling us that they are richer than you and that they can pull more chicks than you, including your girl.

i always thought of it as rappers talking down to some imagined person of the herb persuasion. something like a non-corporeal and featureless avatar on which to shit upon so they feel better about themselves. or "you" is just a mechanism that rappers use to brag about the various things they do at a high skill level. or a combination of the two. i'm not really sure
you're not wrong btw. it's a really weird feature of rap that fans have been inoculated against. it just seems normal to us but i bet it's super off-putting to outsiders

Rap is boasting art form, and a part of boasting is comparing what you have or skills against others. it doesn't have to be someone specific. So when a rapper says i'm the nicest nigga in the game..he's not dissing others.

with you as a listener. most people listen to rappers in an aspirational light at the very least and as counterparts at best it's a major reason why women can listen to rappers talk about bitches and hoes and not feel like they're being talked about if your 'self of steam' is in order and you KNOW you're not what the rapper is talking about its very easy to over look the sentiment and enjoy the lyrics for what they are a rapper bragging about their lifestyle.
