NEW YORK — Is Opus the Penguin back after a quarter-century?
In any case, the popular cartoon character from Bloom County has made an unexpected comeback in a comic strip posted Monday on Facebook by creator Berkeley Breathed. In the strip, Opus awakens after what he discovers was a 25-year nap.
Separately, a posted photo of Breathed shows him at his computer with the caption "A return after 25 years. Feels like going home."
Left unsaid: Whether the revival is a one-off, or, instead, Bloom County is back for an indefinite stay.
The whimsical strip, which viewed politics and culture through the lens of a small town in Middle America, began in 1980, appearing in newspapers daily. But in 1989, Breathed called a halt until now — at least, for one day.
Huffington Post reported that one Facebook commenter noted that Bloom County was returning just as Donald Trump, a frequent target of the strip's satire, is running for president.
"This creator can't precisely deny that the chap you mention had nothing to do with it," Breathed wrote in response.
In one story arc near the end of the strip's run, Trump's brain was implanted into Bill the Cat's head
"Where was the peace when we were getting shot? Where's the peace when we were getting laid out? Where is the peace when we are in the back of ambulances? Where is the peace then? They don't want to call for peace then.
I think I'm blending Bloom County and Outland together, 'cause I was a fan of both of them.

Breathed saw the future.

I'm pretty sure he hated the daily grind part of it before, and that won't get easier. He tried the weekly a few times, first with "Outland" and then just "Opus", but it never took.
But yeah, I always loved it. I was disheartened when I excitedly told my wife about it's possible return, and she told me she never read it. What a difference four years makes.
