I love both shows. Jack Black is like a contemporary Tyrion. Rock is doin his thing. Mendez from New Black may have made the right call, leaving that show for this.

The acting feels a little like a lifetime special to me. I will give it another episode but the homophobia jokes make no sense, the characters are a little predictable and all the women are white or Latina... boring. I don't watch black themed shows without a black female lead.

But yes, the jokes veer into that territory often.

What strikes me is how composed Spencer is all the time, except the one time he absolutely needed to be. He's not the kind of HBO character that's initially presented as flawed. I'm more used to them. He actually seemed to have it together, outside of the unlicensed rep status, so it was weird to see him fall apart like that. But I guess there's a point.

They know how to raise the stakes whilst maintaining the laffs. I appreciate that line. It's why I wish there could be another Cabin in the Woods.
