6. "The music sounds so milquetoast to me" In response to Reply # 0 Sat Jul-04-15 07:59 PM by Boogie Stimuli
It's as if it were Will Downing album tracks with Aaliyah era Timbaland triple-kick drums and rapping over them... with nice trumpet work thrown in.
The musicianship and musicality of the album is awesome, but the songs are very weak for the most part, imo. There are maybe 2 or 3 songs that I felt were more than advanced noodling and that I'd POSSIBLY listen to again. The vast majority of this sounds like songs that should have been left on the cutting room floor. Let me reiterate that's not referring to the quality of the songs but the strength of them.
This album says to me "Look at us! We have awesome musicians, great singers, great engineers, but no songs". The songs don't compliment the talent present here. Mind you, I'm not mad at them for this, because they're young with a LOT of talent at their disposal and that makes it easy to be all over the place and think what you're doing is awesome just because you're doing so MUCH. I think they'll get better the more albums they make. Ultimately, displaying this kind of musicality in this era is a huge positive.
It'd be a great kids album. Not because of the content but the actual sound of the music. Ol' Lion King meets Class of 3000 sounding joint lol.
