"Digital artists: what's your process?"

I needed to draw something last night. I sketched it in light pencil. Traced over that in marker. Scanned that. Then ended up redoing nearly every line in paint/photoshop.

Is there an easier way?

http://www.fiftythree.com/pencil

it's on sale at target for $39.99 and works with many other apps (no just the pencil app from the maker.

you could go straight to sketching on the computer.

it really depends on what tools you have and what you're trying to accomplish.

if you have a digital drawing tablet, sketching right into photoshop might be easier, but i personally think its always best to start from a hard copy scan unless you are a master illustrator.

as for me, i use a lot of photo references and draw/sketch right into photoshop. i also use illustrator.

I got the tiniest one but still. I don't even know what paper feels like any more.

Before that, I'd sketch in blue pencil, ink, scan then separate the black lines in Photoshop.

I might be missing a step or two. It's been a while. But definitely start with blue pencil.

its an old animator/illustrator trick when photography was used so you wouldn't have to erase. or if you did, it was a color that just wouldn't show up.
its still used because visually its much lighter than the final black line

because you don't have to go through all that
you can undo/redo
add layer masks
and already have the linework on a transparent layer

i livestream my process sometimes.

I have a bamboo tablet that I've used since 2009. I've only recently stated sketching with it. Mainly I use it to magic lasso and brush.

i kinda wen't back and forth with it myself so i feel where you're comin from.

i was super frustrated with it until i realized that digital is just a different medium and it just feels and looks different. its still kinda jarring going from paper to tablet and i've been doing it for years.

my process irl is much different than what i do digitally

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

https://www.google.com/search?q=wacom&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

they're pressure sensitive
and with all of the unique brushes out here
you can make a piece look like it was drawn in a sketchpad

the cintiq modelallows you to draw directly on the screen
meanwhile the bamboo and intuos are plugged in
via usb it takes a while getting used to the orientation but its dope

ive been using mines for at least 8yrs now
