In response to Reply # 0

But mainly he's treating "conscious" like it's a gimmick rather than an actual concern
for his projected image as a Black man and how his actions influence other folks with
dark brown skin.
(But he IS only half Black, so maybe that's to be expected? ionno)
On top of having that mindset, he's bragging about it. lol.
His level of not "getting it" is astronomical. So oblivious.
This is the biggest problem with dude for me.
It's all about playing roles to him. As in "I could play the conscious role, but I
played the pop role". But most people are just being who they are, and that's
something that dude can't fathom. And candidly speaking, the repulsion from
that oozing of insincerity is the very thing that separates his fans from his non-fans.
He can write good songs, but he can't be genuine, and some people can see through
him no matter how much he tries to show how vulnerable and open he can be by
mentioning family issues or crushes on Nicki.

Are fake deep imo. At least the ones that are mainstream. That was one of the criticisms I kept hearing about the Kendrick album. Sure didn't help when he hopped on that Taylor Swift song afterwards. And as corny as Drake is one thing I can't say about him is that he hasn't been genuine. Dude has no qualms about being a cornball. Might in some weird way be the realest in the game actually. Real doesn't necessarily have to mean gangster/street shit.

I purposely said absolutely nothing about gangster or street shit, but I wholeheartedly
agree with that above statement. Kendrick ain't gangster. Hell De La Soul wasn't
gangster. Kwame wasn't gangster... but they just came across as genuine people.
I don't know how much clearer I can be about genuineness not being a role you play.
Like I said, he spelled out, right there in the clip, why he isn't a genuine guy. It's all
about playing a role... being fake-nice to build a network (that's behind his beef with
Kendrick, actually), the silly letter to Aaliyah. I care not that the dude is soft. Alotta
my favorite rappers throughout the history of rap have been soft.

I still don't see that as being fake. I mean hes spoken/rapped about it pretty honestly. Having to pretend to be cool with other rappers he don't fuck with. That's basically industry politics and business politics in general. That's why Tyga called him fake and not genuine too because Drake did him like that. But they was never fam and just got thrown together in that young money clique so Drake had to fake like he was cool with him for the sake of the image and brand. As far as music Drake has never had me believe he wasn't being nothing but his genuine corny self. Can't believe I'm in here defending this dude

I don't particularly like Drake either but you don't have to blatantly lie to criticize the dude. He's an easy target. As someone else already said, all rappers are actors...or at the very least are playing bit parts in one way or another.

And you don't have to accuse me of "blatantly lying" to disagree.
"All rappers are actors" is the blatant generalization (and lie) here.
Y'all are thinking in terms of every word they say being true.
We knew special Ed was making up shit in "I Got It Made"
just like we knew The Time was in "Cool".
That ain't what this is.
I done explained it enough by now tho.
All I can say is "real recognize real" (and see through fake) at this point.
His defenders are gonna believe what they want to.
That "shit" is well documented lol.

for singing about himself.

Imagine "Just hold on WE'RE going home" as Drake singing about himself.

like most singers, Drake sings about love/relationships/relationship dynamics - the stuff lot's of singers are known for.

edit: yes some of his RAPS are about women and relationships too ("take care" with Rihanna)

lol @ the idea that singers are bound to only addressing themselves and the relationships they're in.

every artist is entitled to speak their own truth and he seems generally honest in that regard. but i find him very self-absorbed. his work doesn't resonate with me personally (discounting a few joints where he is legitimately rappity-rap-rapping well).

It's nice to make up your own claim to LOL at.

I never said singers are BOUND to do anything.

but...

they usually CHOOSE to sing about love and relationships in most of the POPULAR MUSIC since probably all time.

me: drake for the most part only raps about himself
you: most pop singers sing mostly about relationships

yes, that tangential point may have relevance if
a) this wasn't a discussion about him as a rapper
b) in the context of a post where he is whining about the perceived lack of respect he gets because of his rap style

if your point is that he should be regarded solely as a pop artist, and only judged as such, then sure.

bottom line, in my opinion, he can rap but he is vapid and probably insecure about that (this is made increasingly apparent when he juxtaposes himself with kendrick for putting out "conscious shit")

>the part about Jay Z being jealous of Nas

Come on now...Dude didn't pull that statement out of his ass....lol....It's been said many times....Beyond this site...

When an artist worth over $500 million feels like he has to rap about fucking a lesser means rival's baby mama next to said rival's baby's car seat AFTER getting ridiculed for being ETHERED, then how else r people going to look at it...?

The comparisons can easily be made...Jay (at the time) was the most successful, trend setting MC on the planet...And yet he still felt the need to go at Nas for whatever reason (well, we know the reason, don't we?)....Now Drake is seemingly doing the same thing on a much more sneakier manner....

Jay (during his beef with Nas) and Drake remind me of the kid who seems to have it ALL, but wonders why he continues to be disrespected as he (or she) stews over the fact that the other guy (Nas, Lamar), who has taken a more blue collar, man-of-the-people path, gets all "love"....

It's very obvious, no?....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

Nas had been firing shots since 1998 ("they claim to be New York's king, it aint about that" on We Will Survive)

Jay was very comfortable winning, Prodigy responded to "New York's been soft ever since Snoop came through..." and he responded on The Takeover. The Nas verse was added after Nas responded to Bleek's "What You Think Of That" dissing Jay

if anything, Nas was jealous of Jay-Z at that point. Bringing up Super Ugly as a response to Ether is moot

How is THAT a shot?

Jay indeed was very comfortable....But Jay also got VERY emotional after he got smashed by "Ether"....To the point where even his mama called him out on it....That was hilarious, by the way...

I cant take anyone serious who thinks Ether was good in any regard, from the beat to the lyrics. people just wanted a response from the underdog and they got one.

cause and effect. takeover ----> ether -----> super ugly (which wasn't even a song, just raps over "Bad Intentions") but none of that had anything to do with Jay Z being jealous. He'll say to this day that Ether was trash and his pride was hurt by the city standing behind it

It's happening because people see the parallels between Jay/Drake vs. Nas/K. Lamar....It's a very natural jumping off point...

The irony is Jay was a VERY worthy adversary when it came to his battle with Nas....

With Drake and Lamar, the more this shit gets extended (Drizzy seems to be the only one still salty about the whole thing) the more petty and small Drake looks...

At least Jay didn't stay sneak dissing....He said what he had to say and let the chips fall like a man....Unfortunately, Jay got a little bitchy at the end....

I lived in New York in 1996, Reasonable Doubt was discussed more than It Was Written
Vol. 1 really had the city riding with Jay-Z
Vol. 2 he had the whole world on his side
I Am, Nastradamus and Vol. 3 came out the same year
Then came Dynasty
Then came Blueprint and Stillmatic which dropped the same year

see where Im going here? Jay-Z sprinted ahead of the race

You are building a case for why Jay had no reason to really even think about Nas during that time. He was on top of the world (which is what everyone else is saying here). However, he was thinking about Nas. He was thinking about why Nas didn't want to be on Reasonable Doubt. He was thinking about why Nas baby moms liked Jay enough to sleep with him (which is kinda weird but whatever). We all know Nas was in the gutter with his position in the game. He was selling records but his respect was declining fast. Even with all of that happening Jay thought it was a good idea to send a clear shot at the boy. Something that he would regret.

So sure the difference between K Lamar and Nas is Jay came at Nas directly and during a time when his career was on the decline. Kendrick is still good. Otherwise, Murph already made it plain.

You may not like Ether. That's your right to do so. However, there is one line that is truth. Jay was a fan of Nas. Nas never asked Jay to get on a record with him before the Def Jam deal. Jay can't say the same.

2 million people didn't buy IWW for one song. You could easily buy singles back then and RD didn't get anywhere near the praise from critics that illmatic or RtD received. It was a dope album but he wasn't considered the next coming like Nas and Biggie off his debut release.

If you think "I Gave You Power" or "Live Nigga Rap" had that album moving units as opposed to the woman from "Killing Me Softly" (The Score went 7x platinum in 18 months), there's nothing left to say here

I guess "Hate Me Now" propelled I Am... to double plat status due to Puff's involvement too then. It's cool if you don't want to give Nasir his props. "If I Ruled the World" def helped IWW but you're not going to convince me that many people bought it to get that one song. Nas was a top tier rapper and second most popular next to BIG in the city.

Reasonable Doubt was a just a borderline underground NYC record at the time. A superb one at that, but NOBODY was putting Jay on Nas & BIG's level back then.

Across the country? Sure....But in New York City (which is what 13Rose is talking about) Jay Z was gaining major buzz off of RD....Enough so to be viewed as an up and coming dude that Nas had to worry about....

I think some of y'all don't understand what it means to be HUGE in NYC verses just being huge commercially....Nas was indeed the bigger star at that point....But Jay was being viewed as the hot new nigga who was quickly gaining on Nasir in NEW YORK.....

THE STREETS (which still mattered at that point with mix tapes being HUGE) was riding with Jay VERY heavy......I remember being in college when RD came out....The students outside of NY "heard" about RD....But we didn't think it was the end all to be all like say Mobb Deep's The Infamous, that first 'Kast album, or Only Built 4 Cuban Linx....

But the heads from New York? They were making Jay-Z out to be like the best (and coolest) MC on the East Coast at that moment....That NYC contingent was riding HARD for Jay early on.....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

No prob......

Looking back it was baffling to me....I dug certain joints off of RD....But I smelled a whiff of HOMERISM at the praise Jay was getting from the NY heads....It wasn't until I heard more from Jay on various mixtapes that I brought into the hype....

I'll give you that because I'm from Atlanta. All I can go by is the publications I read and none of them, including The Source (which mattered at the time), touted Jay like he was the next coming but like you said, in the streets of NYC it's a different thing. I can't speak on that. You're talking about atruhead though. Not 13rose, right?

Nas baby mother and used her to get at him. Also fact. Jay was a huge fan of Nas, another fact. We're not even going to get into subs and hearsay.
Jay having the clubs on smash doesn't automatically make him feel better about those truths. Maybe Nas was really being an asshole to Jay back in the early 90s lol.... who knows. It's totally fine to like Takeover better than Ether. But to say Jay didn't hold a grudge against Nas is outlandish. People in Jay's camp have come forward and said they felt that "Ether" was a strong blow based off how the song sounded, not the city's response to it. Let's not try to rewrite history.

Let my love slide in and never slip out

>Lamar should just take the high road and make 'em mad...

TPAB shows that Kendrick is concerned with something altogether different. Drake being still salty behind one verse that was more a call to action than an actual diss looks petty, at best.

I'm still trying to figure out when Drake has ever been conscious. His content, or lack thereof, is one of the main reasons I've never rocked with dude. He's clever, but never really put anything out that resonated with me. He's got millions of fans, though. So, he can do without my fandom.

It just doesn't resonate with me. Something about it just seems...shallow. I know he's a good songwriter and I like some of his stuff. I'm not on the Drake sucks train; I just couldn't see myself being more than a casual listener.

That's not a biggie. I mean, not everybody does social commentary. He's got other lanes, but it's filtered through a middle class lens, that just doesn't resonate with me.

it doesn't take away from his ability. Like I said, not everybody has to do that. It's cool that that's not his lane, but don't sit up and act like there's this mountain of evidence of him spitting social commentary (usually what people mean when they say conscious) and there just isn't. I'm not hating on dude at all. He has his lane. It just doesn't resonate with me. I'm one man vs his millions of other fans. I don't have to be converted. I'm cool being a casual listener.

Kendrick also hosted him on one of his most popular songs.

Drake, like him or not, is probably one of the most popular, and particularly, most influential rappers of now.

he's basically the new Jay-Z. he don't need to be mad at anyone.

why is he mad at Kendrick?

(note: this is not a Drake defense post, I'm asking, why does he feel the need to "sneak diss" Kendrick?)

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

Kendrick was the moses delivering us while Drake was just another rapper that made extremely catchy music. Not enough money in the world to take away that sting.

I will be the first to admit that some of the Drake criticism goes too far....But at least in THIS thread, the complaints have nothing to do with Drake being popular and making money...

Nothing at all....

you love McDonalds

Whole Foods says "We're competing and trying to take McDonalds customers"

McDonalds replies "We could have healthy eaters if we stayed on some conscious shit"

in what world is that not obnoxious?

1) to reply indirectly

2) to publicly say "making money is more important than making a positive difference in the world"

pretend we aren't talking about rappers from Canada and Compton here

in 2011. But to do it for entire verses is their thing, and it's actually an exhausting style to pull off. Like, it's basically impossible to freestyle rap with that flow because there's zero room for error, and the words gotta fit perfectly.

be more obscene. Actually, it's worse just off of the sheer volume of rap artists who do whole songs using that flow. Maybe it doesn't hurt them as much from a commercial standpoint, but Migos have way more biters.

In response to Reply # 0

I always figured that there was more to it than just the Control verse. My half-baked idea was that Drake was frustrated that Kendrick didn't fall under his wing.

The Jay/Nas comparison is pretty apt, actually. As is whoever pointed out that Kendrick's not even concerned about him (although I do like imagining that You Ain't Gotta Lie is in some shape about Drake)

The memorable classic disses dudes were naming names. Throwing subliminals years down the line is corny. If you really got a problem with dude, say it.

Niggas were dissing over baby's on album covers. Ghostface talked greasy to 50 over a doctored up voice and a alias. Hardly anybody actually said names and that was what was great about it because niggas had to get their inspector gadget on to figure out who was catching them darts. Wasn't no twitter back then and no gossip sites. Anyway this is pretty mundane for the uproar it's causing. Well on here at least because I've yet to see anybody really give a fuck about this anywhere else.

All of them shits you mentioned aren't memorable. You're naming skits too. Nothing classic or memorable about them. I'm talking "The Bridge Is Over", "No Vaseline", "Takeover", "Ether", etc. Or even when Beans and Jada were going back n forth. Those are the memorable joints. That subliminal stuff always has and always will be corny. Especially if you're doing it for years.

In response to Reply # 172

Lets rewind to a yr ago
Kast played coachella and Andre visibly sucked
You know it I know it everyone saw it
By the time he hit governors ball he was back in form
I know it because I went to the gov ball last yr as well
So I expect most acts who are on these summer runs
To work out most of the kinks in their live show by June

Not taking up for him but has drake ever played coachella before?
I'd expect a sorry show. The thing about him is
He has so many hits you don't know which songs will work best

He gave a balanced set tho. He didn't do anything older
Than take care given the crowds age
he should've done Marvin's room
But the ppl went crazy for all of the consecutive hits he's had in the last yr
A few of which weren't even album cuts
0-100 we made it trophies

I had to give him respect after this show tho

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*
