"non new yorkers: what do you envision brooklyn to be like?"
Thu Jun-04-15 11:10 AM by bonamie

im curious about those especially not from the north east coast
and those from other countries
i had a funny yet not funny incident with a bnb guests
and everyone i know is cracking up about it because we live here and we know what BK is like
what's everyday to us, really rattled these people
like they complained that people rode motorcycles the wrong way on the street
and im like...welcome to thursdays *shrug*
i guess im...hardened?
LOL

BKers, what do your friends/family/visitors think about where you live?

part of the prob is that my grandmom's live around the corner from foxy

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

It's about the size of what's left of ChinaTown in New York.

It's super grimey - and every every corner there's an artisan pickle shop. Filled with the roughest toughs and the metro-i-est sex-uals.

This is my impression of Flushing Meadows in a GIF: http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/17o5dqrhv0cyegif/original.gif

It would look like a scene from the Warriors.

I stayed near the Barclays & was amazed at how big Brooklyn was. I walked from the hotel to Flatbush & that shit was eye opening! I went from sushi & ramen spots to some West Indian cat tryna sell me fake Beats headphones out of a liquor store bag.

I was blown away at how clean it was for that many people to be there & SAFE (relativily speaking). I got lost on the train & everyone i asked for directions was eager as hell to help, one person even walked me to the right train so that was wild.

The clubs were weak as shit though

Shit pops but its forced to be under the radar. Which means you gotta spend alot of energy keeping in the know to whats popping. Which means after a certain age most of us sit on bar stools in lounges whining about the above, being old as shit.

things have changed a lot in a short time
most people don't even leave BK on the weekends if they don't have to

then manhattan is better. but you have to deal with the crowds

if it's a weekend and i need to buy something to wear i always try and see if i can get it at uniqlo at atlantic terminal or urban outfitters or H&M or even Nordstrom Rack lol

where i live there's enough restaurants bars/spots w/ djs/clubs in the immediate vicinity to not have to go to manhattan

i get that if u lived there, even staying with friends or visiting friends

but in terms of just as a visitor to new york city, what does bk have to offer that manhattan doesnt?

im talking tourist, im talking this is my first time to new york, im not getting a bnb in bk, waste of time

bk has just never impressed me, ive given it SEVERAL tries at this point, i can find cool restaurants and bars in atlanta or ST louis for that matter

when i think of new york i think of skyscrappers and bustle and lights and thats what ill stick to now besides visiting friends

ppl get offended and im sorry for that but ppl shit on atlanta all the time, those are the breaks, it aint for everybody

but bk has

the flea
smorgasburg
various festivals throughout the summer that are specifically for young POC
best clubs in NYC right now are in Brooklyn depending on your scene

for a sightseeing type brooklyn definitely isn't where it's at but if you're a young person trying to have fun Manhattan really doesn't have all that much to offer

or cronuts lol

but ur right that is bk's appeal...that its the "cool" place to be, its the agreed upon idea that bk is cool and thats where the cool kids go lol

im grown enuff and secure enuff to know what i want out of my new york trip

last time i was in new york, went to the bk museum to see the kehinde wiley exhibit, it was awesome but it just happened to be in bk, i had great drinks at a place around the corner from my frat's place in williamsburg, i paid 15 dollars for an AMAZING sandwich at this deli/grocery across the street from his place, it was my third time visiting that particular shop since he's been living on that block. all thats well and good but that coulda happened in any city USA to be honest lol

but when i was taking the roosevelt island sky lift across and pumping thru manhattan i felt like i was actually somewhere different, somewhere completely unique and amazing. thats what i want

I think what makes BK awesome is cultural; there is so much to do in Brooklyn every weekend, and Brooklyn has such a strong young Black scene, that going elsewhere often seems pointless.

That said, if somebody doesn't get what others find appealing about a place, then it's just not for them. Although I know few young Black New Yorkers who would choose Manhattan over Brooklyn in 2015, I can totally see why Black people in Atlanta would prefer Harlem over Bed-Stuy. And at the end of the day, it's pretty dope that NYC offers both areas (plus others of course lol) to choose from.

I always thought it was that more black dominate neighborhood till this hipster white cat moved to my city from there and I was confused. He told me "Man brooklyn got too expensive, too many brokers and uppity white folk, so I sold my house and moved here." Now he lives in a predominately black/asian neighborhood filled with corner stores and coffee spots on the west coast.

we keep it moving,

i just thought BK would be the funniest place ever, that I would live for the low in BK, and Sex and The City it up in Manhattan on the weekends.

And essentially, that's what it was for me...then it became, living in an expensive ass apartment, eating brunch at a black owned establishment most of the time, partying in BK and only going to the city when I wanted to shop or if that's the "central location" for everyone.

so it's pretty much how I envisioned, except more expensive

Anything to do is at least a 20 minute train ride. And the shit isn't that great. I miss Harlem. Brooklyn is too spread out for me. I miss walking from 118th to 125th and back to 116th... In Brooklyn if I want to leave Peaches and head to Brooklyn Bowl or some shit? Fucking forget it.

you can take it all the way to wburg or to the G train
G to Nassau is actually almost the same distance to BK Bowl as the L to Bedford walking wise

BedStuy - Wburg can be a struggle at times (i live closer to Clinton Wash to it's actually much easier) but it's not terrible

its a different rhythm

harlem is literally one neighborhood

you are finding yourself wanting to do stuff in separate neighborhoods

its like you are trying to get to tribeca from harlem east on the weekend
its definitely bigger

>harlem is literally one neighborhood

if by one neighborhood you mean 110th to where the Bronx begins on the east side and Rucker Park or the Washington Heights border on the west side, then sure it's one neighborhood

it covers a ton of land on both sides of Manhattan, a neighborhood is Chelsea, Greenwich Village, Chinatown or Little Italy

where Jim Jones is from and where A$AP Rocky is from isnt even walking distance

In response to Reply # 0

Shit is weird because Brooklyn niggas known for grimey shit but it's gentrified now. Sidewalks is clean in the white areas and police are out 24/7 stop and frisking every black person with a pulse. Also, white people seem obnoxious as fuck and scarily slammable. The same can be said for landlords that push out black tenants.

In other words, I think it's the hunger games mixed with Elysium minus the technology. I'd HATE living in Brooklyn because of the police force, high rent, and seemingly rampant disgust for black people. Those three things should not be equal.

But as a whole, I always thought you would get robbed n mugged on any random street if it was night time, and you were solo, or with a date. Even in 07, I remember walking to a subway at night, and my dad was being paranoid, saying "this is NY, you can't just be walking around the city like that!"

fancy watch?
diamonds?
hard bottoms?

i.e. did you look rich? or had something someone else would want?

its weird
i still dress for the most part for style and not for wealth
but mostly above all i dress not to look like a target
meaning no heels and tight outfits
being able to run or fight

i got out of that in the 00's
but a lot of that is still in me when i see women on the L at 3am by themselves drunk
one too many things could go wrong with that situation

oh sorry to focus
its not about just being out at that time
but looking like a target at all times
you could get got mid day for your iPad
like...why would you have an iPad out mid day...

It was too cold to have a shirt and chain on. Well the night I went out, I probably did have on hard bottoms and a button up...but surely ain't look anything NEAR rich.

And yeah, I can get that. It's the same way anywhere...being solo and looking like a target makes you a target. But I assumed NY folks would just jack ANYBODY for anything they had. "Give me yo VR Troopers watch that you got from your Happy Meal, just because!" is what I think the perception says.

lets be honest though, if you are talking about downtown oakland then you have to admit that the white people didnt anything wrong but put money into it since downtown oakland was a total broken down hole up about 2005.

i envisioned it was gonna look like Sesame Street.

then when i went for the first time to visit my ex boyfriend, it didn't help that he lived in boerum hill so it actually did resemble sesame street w the brownstones.

i was under the impression that it was mad small, like maybe the area ranging from park slope to downtown to ft greene to bed stuy. like that mileage area, but with mad micro-neighborhoods fit into that that would encompass every BK stereotype i knew of, which would include brownsville hood to bensonhurst italians. i had NO idea it was so huge and spread out. i also only thought it had 1 bridge, the brooklyn bridge.

i did not realize it was a part of the island that is long island.

i did not realize that it had actual beaches u cld go to and get in the ocean. i did not understand coney island was a beach in brooklyn.

i didn't know it had so many races/ethnicities. i thought i would only see black, woody allen type jewish, and italian. spike lee movies contributed to this image.

after living in the ny area for 13 years, and brooklyn for 11, i love it so much dirt trash hard living gentrification expensiveness and all, but i'm forced to live in a different state now, AND don't think i cld gp back due to expensiveness, hard living, and harsh winters. i say me loving new york is a sickness. it's illogical for me to love it due to the hard way of life. but i can't help it. and yes i'm one of those non-natives who have moved elsewhere and can't stop talking about it and ppl r sick of me lol.

so this is my first year here and im still not getting the concept of "hard winter" in nyc

when i think of a hard winter i think of the midwest where it dips into sub zero temperatures regularly where folks who live there would come to a nyc winter and wear jorts and hunting boots because its not yet 40 below.
