"fellow atheist/ agnostic/ rational theologians: a logical heaven..."
Thu May-28-15 12:27 PM by Somnus

hypothetically speaking wouldn't a grand afterlife, hereafter, paradise be not unlike this existence. The full spectrum of experiences sans the downright dreadful ones (ie fear, pain etc). Like I mean, I've always heard heaven expressed as a place of neverending joy & bliss & spectacular shit but given enough time and repetition doesnt even that get old.

A true heaven as I see it would also be filled with the mundane, the nothing spots, the absolute emptiness of being...a profound void...

emphasis on profound.

wutchu think?

save for the heaven and hell we create for one another

paradise is a state of mind/perception, as is hell

you're absolutely right in determining that heaven cannot exist without hell to contrast it, thus, heaven and hell are literally the same thing. Which side of the spectrum you choose to dwell and focus on is entirely up to you

there are people on this planet that are content, happy, and in love with nature and one another, on the inverse of this experience, there are people whom live in fear, unhappy, and with hatred in their hearts

once again, hate cannot exist without love to contrast it, they are two sides of the same coin, just like life & death

you cannot have the foreground without the background and vice versa

i personally believe that the universe sprang into existence to facilitate life

according to the ancient philosophies, our time is limited so that we grasp the beauty of something that is essentially eternal, because as if we were always eternal, we would be disconnected from that very eternity as there would be nothing to contrast it (such as short life)

hence, comes in the universe, to offer a playground for life to explore itself on, if we are to take the big bang as fact, than the universe sprang into existence with any and every conceivable fragment of stuff, and on the brink of the universe, on the brink of a galaxy (where Earth is), where the mixtures of "stuff" and the patterns are more complex, you find life.

i believe consciousness is the looking glass for the universe itself, and if we are exploratory, life preserving, artistic, emotional, and adventurous beings, there is no reason to assume the universe is any different, as we were in fact, molded by it.

i'm basically saying, if you are black, you would be unable to tell you were black unless there were people who weren't black to contrast you.

someone or something that is eternal would be unable to know their eternity without short life to contrast it

one & the same w/ the universe, which is eternal, which in turn would make us eternal (in a sense, no?) but yet & still we also experience finality in the sense of a limited mortal lifespan which helps us to appreciate the beauty of an everlasting universe, yes?

>everlasting universe, yes?

nicely written, and yeah, that's exactly what i was trying to convey, but to add to it, our limited mortality also allows us to appreciate the beauty of all things in the universe, not just the eternal universe, but music, or art, or just about anything that we as humans get to do and explore, discover, or create. limitations lead to limitless ingenuity, and in this sense, limits and non-limits are the same thing too as they cannot exist without one another

to me, the purpose of existence is evident in nature, and if you look into at nature, you will see every living creature or plant striving to preserve its own life or species, thus, we can assume that the preservation of life is an innate quality all living things have, you could even call it a purpose

materialists will deny that there is anything such as purpose but i bet you all of them want to have sex and reproduce, and that is something that they cannot use reason to nullify, it happens without reason or ideas, people become aroused, and that leads to reproduction, it happens entirely outside the realm of thought

if you look at the great extinction event, which is the asteroid which wiped out almost all life, the next dominant being to emerge after the dinosaurs was the human being, and what are we all interested in? leaving the planet and spreading to other parts of the galaxy/universe. why? well, a practical reason would be to ensure that life would preserve itself in case another asteroid came. i see a logic and natural progression in that, to me, it shows that the universe is learning of itself, and that we are in essence tools of its own discovery, or of our selves, all great philosophical and spiritual traditions focus on the discovery of the "true self", even jesus said "the kingdom of god is in you", and "i am".

you lose track of time completely

8 hours go by, and you have no recollection of them as you do while you are awake

there is no reason to assume life and death is any different

you fall sleep, some time passes which you are not aware of, and you are reborn

there is an ancient axiom which states "as above, so below" and i think humanity has access to all experiences and eventualities through a fractal experience of them: sleeping and waking to living and dying, the only difference is their scale

you can visualize this with a mandelbrot zoom, scale changes, but the patterns remain the same

The problem is your applying logic, as we know it in this plane to a plane of existence that is utterly BEYOND anything we've experienced or could imagine.

without the contrast of bad

is good good?

probably not.

with the emphasis on kingdom and kingdoms need rulers, counsellors, and a host of other roles in order to be effectively run. The entire planet will be ruled by Christ and his followers will be the administrators of his government.

Also I'd imagine a few hundred years would be spent replenishing the earth after the numerous cataclysms that will herald the start of the new age.

I thought that one of the main points of atheism/agnosticism was accepting that nothing happens after death or that no one will ever have the answer (I tend to side with the latter). So, I would kind of find the whole idea of imagining a heaven utterly useless.

I posit, your mind would beg to differ.

I'm definitely not an atheist, but I'm not necessarily an agnostic. I just don't subscribe to western religion. I don't believe in subscribing to cosmologies that don't include me culturally. I'm more into developing a system of beliefs based on my own experiences with life and my culture. An afterlife really kind of falls to the wayside for me. Since I don't want my morality to be based on the fear of consequence or the promise of a reward, I don't really need a heaven or hell to motivate me. I'm more interested in doing what I can to make the best of the world I'm in.
