"Pay your tickets"
Fri May-22-15 11:53 AM by John Forte

I got pulled over for a bullshit ticket in bumfuck VA that I wanted to fight, but wasn't willing to travel to bumfuck VA to fight the ticket, so I decided not to pay it. Couple months later I got a letter for PA (where I'm licensed) telling me they'd suspend my license if I don't get right with VA. I paid my fine and sent them proof, and everything was cool.

A couple weeks ago, I got a letter reminding me that it was time to renew my license, but wouldn't be able to since Virginia suspended my right to drive. Turns out that I have to pay VA $140 to re-instate my right to drive in VA, even though I paid my fine and I'M NOT LICENSED THERE. I paid that shit, and repeatedly tried to renew my license online, only to receive an error message telling me I had to renew in person.

I finally make my way to the DMV on Weds (my license expires tomorrow) and they tell me I can't renew because MA has suspended my privileges. I'm livid because at no point while I lived in Boston did I receive a single ticket. They gave me a number in MA to clear it up, but I was on hold until 5pm, when the office closed. I called Thurs morning and was told by the automated system that the call volume was so high, I'd have to do a scheduled call back, THE NEXT DAY.

Today, I get my scheduled callback, and it proceeds to put me on hold for 20 fucking minutes. When I finally get someone on the phone, they tell me that they suspended my license because VA reported me to the national driver database or whatever. I explained that not only had I cleared that infraction, but I was licensed in PENNSYLFUCKINGVANIA when they suspended a Mass license that I no longer held. The only way they will remove the hold is if the state of PA sends them proof that I was licensed in PA, They will not accept the driver record that I paid for and pulled from the DMV website.

PA's DMV said that they can't do it over the phone. I can mail in a request or I can walk into the main branch in fucking Harrisburg. She said there's a CHANCE that my local office might be willing to do it, but it's above and beyond their responsibilities, so she won't make any guarantees. Did I mention the fact that my license expires fucking tomorrow.

that's pretty much why states give a lot of tickets to out of state drivers, because you can't dispute them.

being fined twice, sometimes even three times - for essentially the same infraction is beyond egregious, and an absolute paper chase by state governments. People are being taxed crazily and on top of it, getting their pockets robbed by cops and bureaucratic madness, and to add the cherry on top: abused, thrown in jail for petty offenses, and taken advantage of (with the people's money at that!) as these agencies do everything but serve and protect.

Amongst progressives, there needs to be a re-evaluation of the presumptive legitimacy many of us give to taxation whereby we never second-guess if government agencies are conducting themselves properly, efficiently, and with the least burden done to the people.

Shit like this makes me want to Tiamat Jihad.

yep.

Not long ago NY had a decent system where if you went to court, theyd reduce all your fines 50% and just ask you to settle. The city needed a money grab so Bloomburg deaded that.

The shit that pisses me off is lot sof ppl around here get tickets for alternate side parking violations so the dumb ass street sweeper can roll through.

Those things are the biggest pieces of shit on wheels ever created and sold to the city for what probably was a multi million or even billion dollar deal.

Countless times ive watched those things do nothing but knock dust into the air. When theres a bottle or can on the street you expect those thing sto pick them up, nope. they just roll over them--garbage still on the ground.

summons for traffic violations. Gave me a summons for running a stop sign or as the officer described it disorderly conduct by creating a hazardous condition.

Had to to a half day of community service to avoid the potential $450 fine.

I got a public urination ticket (guilty - the line to the bathroom at Bembe was nuts and I was about to pee on myself, so I pee'd under the Williamsburg Bridge and got caught).

When I went to the court (you can't just send in the payment - you have to appear before the judge) about 85 - 95% of the people I saw waiting for cases were black and brown. It was all Quality Of Life, Broken Windows Theory type stuff - nothing serious. And the fucking bailiffs and cops there talk to you like you're scum lowlife. I hated the whole experience.

gets on stage and says "we need new tax increases to help those who need public assistance!"

Yet the reality is this: public assistance programs are ass. Communities who need the assistance most are grossly undeserved and live in squalor with inefficient, incompetent, and and misguided public programs, despite the fact that taxes only increase and flood state agencies with more than enough $ to address the problems and come to the aid of these communities.

With the amount of wealth this nation has, tax $ could easily build the infrastructure for nation-wide broadband, massively enhanced infrastructure within poor communities that are rivaling 3rd world conditions, and revolutionized health-care/food delivery systems/educational/social programs that really improve the the floor standard-of-living that every citizen should enjoy. Instead, we've got police officers making 109k w/ the people's money so that they break spines, be nowhere to be found when someone is in need, and be everywhere to be found when it's time to issue traffic infractions, drug charges, and court-dates laden with exorbitant fees.

are largely hardcore right-winger/libertarian types who want to revert to
Wild-West governance (conveniently now that they have accrued all the $).

However, there must be a cogent, progressive voice that challenges the
unquestioned practice of continuing to bloat budgets and government agencies
that are not serving the people's best interest - particularly those who need it most -
poor, minority communities who never see the benefit of these alleged programs
that democrats rail about all day every day.

These programs need to be massively improved upon and audited by the people's
representatives so that we're not just giving blank checks to police departments, DMV's,
and other agencies that have become debt collectors and punitive ticket distributors.

suspended bc of his tickets. However, they sent the letter to his moms address(he recently moved). Not his fault right? Try explaining that to the trooper that pulled us over on the highway near Lake George at 3am.

In response to Reply # 0

So when I left Tampa, I gave me car back to the dealership and they agreed to give my plates back for me. I was good with them up there so I trusted them.

I had been living in NYC and renting cars on vacation to get around the city for 3 years when one day I decided to apply for Zipcar. Through freaking Zipcar *because they check your driving record* I learned that my license was suspended in FL due to failure to have car insurance because it's required there.

I knew it was in error because I no longer owned a vehicle and I know I had insurance up until the week I gave my car back but I said whatever because I was still able to rent cars, I'm an excellent driver, and I never had time to go to FL to clear it up anyway.

Well back in January, some 2 years later I rented a car to go see my brother in PA and I get pulled over in NJ for driving in the left hand lane. Which I did not know you couldn't do! But anyway, I know my license was fucked up but I played dumb. He didn't take me to jail, which I was thankful for.

He only wrote me the ticket for DWSL, and gave me a court date. I had to leave my rental on the side of the road and he drove me two miles to a diner where I had to sit and wait for a friend to come get me for 4 hours. Thank God he didn't have it towed.

Well I called, and called for over 8 hours around the State of Florida and Geico for proof that I had insurance and that my plates were surrendered. I finally got through to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Patrol and the chick was on the phone for 3 minutes when she says, oh this is old. I unsuspended it because it's so old. Lol

License unsuspended but I still have the court date, took me long enough but I submitted a plea by mail form. I faxed it over the day before my court date, CASE DISMISSED!

They appearantly gave me a parking ticket at some point a few months ago...
For parking in a space on the street for which I have a permit to park in....
On a street that they actually DON'T even have jurisdiction (US Park Services Police jurisdiction..don't ask, it's complicated)

So anyway...I get a letter in the mail talking about I didn't pay a ticket....and now the fine was doubled...

A ticket I never got...well...a ticket they likely WROTE,(Typed really) then discovered they were out of jurisdiction or realized I actually held a permit to be parked where I was, and I assumed just threw it away instead of placing it on my vehicle...

So yeah...
that shit is in their adjudication system now....which can only be done online or over the phone....

I got a ticket right when before I got to VA (coming up I85 from NC). I was driving fast trying to get home because I wanted to stop in Richmond to see my grandma. Not paying any attention, and I get a ticket. When he hands me the ticket he says "your court date is..." and I'm like wait...I can't just pay this off? he's like nope. Okay I'm in Baltimore, no way I'm driving down to NC in the middle of the week. I assume that if I don't pay, they will just send me a bill for the ticket. I was wrong. They straight up suspended my license BUT I didn't find out until a year later when I bought a new car and tried to get insurance and they told me I couldn't get insurance. They said NC suspended my license. I had to call all these random places and somehow, I ended up getting a lawyer because they said I needed someone to go to court for me if I couldn't do it on my own. The lawyer calls me a week later like "ok you actually got another ticket in NC for speeding on such and such date." so i had two NC tickets. He had to go to both counties and clear it up, so I had to pay him a total of $2500 for two tickets. He sends me the proof and the two tickets amounted to $500 but I had to pay the court costs for failure to show and his costs. I was so sick.

But he got them to take the tickets off my record and I didn't get any points...but I don't even know if that mattered since i had an MD license anyway.
