"Poll question: Did your parents send you away for the summer?"

I'm not talking about a couple weeks at camp or whatever. Did your parents send you to spend the summer with a relative in the country, down south, in your homeland?

I lived in Decatur, GA, but every summer I was sent to GARY, IN!

It was fun as hell when I was younger, but by my middle school years I realized, "Hold on...this city is a hell hole...how did I not notice."

Once I started high school, I stopped going away for the summer.

sure you can meet people in that new city but it's never quite the same as spending a summer at home around people you know much better

it wasn't so much being sent away, but being left in the care of my grandparents in their home country for a month while they went on business trips. Those were some fun times though, spent most of it with my cousins and having fun. I must have been around 5 years old but I do remember missing my mom and dad a lot by the end of the month. Then they'd return and we'd spend another fun month with family or go away to another country for a bit before coming home at the end of summer break.

Not sure if that counts as being sent away. I didn't travel (by plane) on my own until I started going to research conferences during college.

were rounded up, grandma had a pool and free time, our first cousins from miami and 2nd cousins from south jersey would come too

it was great, lifelong memories. we used to sleep out on the screen enclosed porch on cots lol

it never dawned on me until i was an adult that it was a practical way to have childcare for working parents and that always was a chance for a breather from being a mom and a chance to just be an adult

...
It was kinda country...but really just on the outskirts of Greensboro so that we were still "touchable" if grandma reported back that we were actin fool....

It was cool....and my parents are hoping we do the same with our daughter by sending her down to NC for a few weeks....but I don't see it happening anytime soon....they been trying to talk it up ever since she was born! I don't see it happening at LEAST until she's maybe 6 or 7 years old.... The world is different now. They're parenting mentalities are vastly different than ours, and frankly I just don't have a ton of confidence in their decision making skills when it comes to toddlers right now.

I feel kinda bad about it....but at the same time...it don't take but a summer to fck a kid up for life!

Cultivating my country accent, learning how to fish, and all other sorts of country ass'd shit. And having my cousins teach me about football. And eating up all my grandmama's cooking and food from her farm. And learning how to cook. Those were really good times. Even when my bad ass'd cousins would get me in trouble. lol

My parents were divorced. So, depending on who I was living with during the year, I'd spend the summer with the other. My mom was in TX and my pops was in Brooklyn until he got remarried. Then, he bounced around b/c his wife was a drill sergeant. So, I was all over the country growing up.

but a few times i was 'sent' to my cousin's house in lefrak to chill for like a week at a time.
it was great for me because we got so much freedom
and i was the older one of the crew so i kept my lil cousin out of trouble
but we would still have mad fun.

Starting at 3 years old. Either my dad or aunt would be there to take me the rest of the way to my grandma's house in New Bern, NC. I went there every summer until one summer I went to Rochester, NY. I went to NC one more summer, but my cousins were all grown and trying to get jobs.
