That first album was, for the most part, a hot fucking mess. But Top Dogg and Last Meal were both excellent specifically because they let him do his own thing, like you said...with a little southern hospitality mixed in, which was fine. That first album shoulda never happened but I get why they did it. But his trip to No Limit was more for protection from Suge and for funding for his own work. And I'm glad they realized that and let him do him for the last two albums there.

but the move was necessary for the obvious business reasons (aka getting the f*ck away from the impending Suge-led disaster).

He got better with each subsequent No Limit release thru Last Meal, then hasn't looked back since getting into his own situation afterwards.

In recent years he's taken some major musical risks while being over two decades in but actually managing to be more publicly himself than ever.

He's taken some chances but they've been calculated and for the most part, they've worked. And I'm glad he continues to do something different, because it's kept him relevant. And more exposure to Snoop is always welcome. Dude is hilarious, such a great character and personality. I guess we should've seen this coming, his omni-presence and longevity. Since the day he came on the scene he's been one of the coolest personalities we've ever seen.

What cracks me up looking at old footage of him though is how shy he was. It's hilarious to see now considering what he became just shortly after he first broke out. It seemed like it wasn't til after Doggfather that he really broke out of his shell. Before that he always seemed so reserved and probably too high to speak. Eventually he kind of got comfortable in the public eye and it turns out he's got like the greatest personality of any rapper we've ever known.

2. Nia Long is in this video? Man she is still fine, only reason I'm even going to watch Uncle Buck

Yea I think most of West thought it was a deathblow for Snoop to go over to No Limit when it was first announced. Once the news that he did it to get out from under Suge and No Limit Top Dogg came out, everyone was all in.

I think the fact he was able to work with Dre again is what kept the momentum going.

sometimes u gotta leave ur inner nigger in the bank vault. - desus

Dre had left without his masters a year or two before and Pac was dead.

Truth is West Coast rap music was dying on the vine in the late 90's from a commercial standpoint, things had really started swinging down south and back east.

I can't think of a major West Coast rap album that even went platinum post-Doggfather in '97, '98 or almost through all of '99 until Chronic 2001 at the end of that year *except* Snoop albums which were really more Snoop-slumming-in-the-South-with-Beats-by-the-Pound records.

He quickly redeemed himself the following year by releasing No Limit Top Dogg. Then he released his second best album, Tha Last Meal, the year after that.

and just got out of jail. Snoop been out of the hood for years outside of charitable work. Tray Deee comes off as genuine because ... he's telling the truth. Snoop spitting gangsta raps (at least 1st person raps) would be disingenuous.

That single "Still a G thang" got maaaajor radio play. I think the album dropped the first week of 9th grade for me, so everybody was bumpin it. But then when "Top Dogg" came???? Yea, we were even more hype. That whole album still goes.

the rest of that album was a shitshow. I'm a HUGE Snoop fan, as you know, but even I was questioning what he was doing after The Game...dropped.

But yea - Top Dogg dropped and I was like, damn. This dude's back. Listened to that album in full jsut the other day actually. First time in a while. I remember going to AAU basketball tournaments listening to that album over and over and over on the rides down with my parents.

I do remember being pissed that he put "No Limit" in the title of that album tho. Originally it was just gonna be called "Top Dogg". I forget what the reason was for that, was it because of that YG Top Dogg dude that Suge was trying to push?

It wasn't until 400 Degreez dropped at got play that you even thought No Limit MIGHT have competition. Even in Summer 1999, people didn't think No Limit was gonna be done already....but it was sinking a bit at that point.

But nah, Summer 98 was like their commercial prime. They were fresh off of "Make em say Ugh" and "Da last don."

before Snoop there were only d-list rappers signed to the label, IMO. i thought him signing w/that company was a step down for him coming off Death Row. to wit, NL had a distribution deal w/Priority (which i thought was an independent label) whereas DR had a deal w/Interscope (which was owned by or affiliated w/a major label - either Time-Warner Music or Universal-MCA, depending). to me that was a step down for Snoop. it was not a lateral move.

fuck you.

They had a LOT of D-List. BUT...Mystikal was HOT, wack ass Silkk was hot, Master P himself had a LOT of bangers and was the colonel of the mothaphukkin tank, Mia X was dope dope, Fiend held it down on every track, C-Murder was iite.

They were surely the hottest label out Summer 1998, and Cash Money hadn't made any noise just yet. Looking back, we might have seen it sinking, but I think they were on fire then. And we all knew Death Row was declining for sure at that point. No Limit was way "hotter" at the moment.

I don't think the ship started to sink until a year later.

at that point, it was like this tidal wave of realization that Cash Money did the gangsta stuff but they could have some serious fun, too. No Limit never struck us youngsters as "fun", just mean and grizzly. But I was never tuned much into No Limit anyway, I just remember a friend of mine NEVER giving up on Silkk the Shocker, especially in the "upgrade your 94 Honda with some 12's" era of junior high everybody goes through when they get some money and have nothing to spend it on.

everything No Limit had released to that point seemed bootleg and ridiculous and awful. and their albums had those awful, cheesy covers. the whole operation felt amateur - like they were pressing CDs and covers in somebody's basement on some printer they bought at Best Buy.

it felt like it was beneath Snoop - who was on his way to becoming a legit Pop star by then. signing w/them seemed like a step backward.

fuck you.

has a few standout stars, mainly Drake, Nicki, Wayne, then some who are borderline stars or just not as big, like Tyga...then a WHOLE LOT of D-List artists that most folks don't know of at all.

Quality wise, you could definitely say they were on a downward shift, but they just put out TOO MUCH shit as a whole. I was looking at this list and said SHIT....

1997
Various Artists - West Coast Bad Boyz II
TRU - Tru 2 da Game
Steady Mobb'n - Pre-Meditated Drama
Various Artists - I'm Bout It
Mia X - Unlady Like
Mr. Serv-On - Life Insurance
Master P - Ghetto D
Mystikal - Unpredictable
1998
Young Bleed - My Balls & My Word
Silkk the Shocker - Charge It 2 da Game
C-Murder - Life or Death
Various Artists - I Got the Hook Up
Sons of Funk - The Game of Funk
Fiend - There's One in Every Family
Soulja Slim - Give It 2 'Em Raw
Master P - MP Da Last Don
Kane & Abel - Am I My Brother's Keeper
Mac - Shell Shocked
Snoop Dogg - Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told
Big Ed - The Assassin
Skull Duggery - These Wicked Streets
Magic - Sky's the Limit
Various Artists - Mean Green
Prime Suspects - Guilty 'til Proven Innocent
Gambino Family - Ghetto Organized
Mia X - Mama Drama
Ghetto Commission - Wise Guys
Steady Mobb'n - Black Mafia
Full Blooded - Memorial Day
Various Artists - We Can't Be Stopped
Mystikal - Ghetto Fabulous

In 97, they only released 8 albums, yet most of us knew at least one song from 6-8 of them. They put out 23 albums in 98, which was much more quantity over quality.

Yet, they were hot enough to get away with it, and most of them still sold a decent amount, even with no real promotion. If I had been older and more critical, I probably would have seen it as a step back. In hindsight...it kinda was, but Death Row did have Snoop under a HORRIBLE deal, and P helped him out of it, and gave him major advice for the future.

It was funny too...first second she walked in, all three DJ's were friendly, slightly star struck. Ten min after she was on the decks...NOBODY even had to make eye contact with each other on some "the fuck is this...." it was just a complete silence where we alllllllllllllll knew the deal.

What was stupid about it is that it was a Black folks "Pre-Grammy Party" with Meek, Diddy, all those types....so she didn't even fit that shit at ALL. That crowd gave no shits, damns, fucks, or cares about her being the DJ. If it had been a 18-21 White crowd, maaaaybe.

I typically work the weekends and the spot I work at is just a bar/restaurant so I don't get to see many DJs spin anyway, but we do events and this wedding production company is in the same building as us so they wanted to have an investors party at our spot. Had people from all over the midwest in to celebrate and one of their local DJs play the spot.

This dude had the Harden mohawk with no-lens glasses and a half-suit on, was drinking Negronis until it was time for his set, had his headphones on over his forehead on some Star Trek shit...and proceeded to play the first minute of every major song form the past 15 years with no transitions, loops, anything. Just moving right along.

I was amazed he didn't bust out the Chicken Dance or Cupid Shuffle.

I haven't been so annoyed by a so-called Music Dude in a long while. There was no taste to it, no class, no flair, no build...and the worst part was, his crowd ATE IT UP. I was so mad. Big guy that insisted on me calling him Godfather kept ordering "that fruity cocktail you made me before" which I mostly bullshitted out of Dekuyper liqueurs yet he loved the shit out of but refused to tip for because he was "part of the party and these drinks ain't free".

Bad DJs, ugh...

...WTF happened to Snoop? "Damn you was the man, homie"

Now knowing why he made that movie, it makes sense.

But Snoop hopping off one hype train (declining as it was) to another one, just seemed like a recipe for a fall off.

at the MTV Rock-n-Jock Softball game, I wanna say '96.

Those two I believe were just meeting, shortly thereafter were running the show, developed a bit of chemistry playing out there, shortly thereafter Suge was in jail and Snoop was in Baton Rogue with the tank.

Take my anger with a grain of salt. I historically LOATHE any kinds of "sequels" or nostalgic type shit when it comes to art. I have no problems with giving a nod to your past but blatantly trying to relive your past glory drives me insane (I hate all movie sequels with few exceptions, see them as money grabs. Hate HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE when rappers title albums "Marshall Mathers LP 2" and bullshit like that. What a fucking miserable fad that's been. Fucking get creative, you idiots. Hate sequels to songs for the most part. Just make a new fucking song. I almost died when Snoop said he was making Doggystyle 2 back in 2011. Thankfully he retitled it Doggumentary)

Anyway - my point is that when I heard all this nostalgic shit (Still a G Thang (which is a fine song, but still applies), Woof!, etc...then saw the tracklist and saw Gin & Juice II), I was like ... ugh, he's fucking done.

Thankfully that was his one MAJOR misstep but god was it a scary one. Terrible, terrible album with terrible, terrible callbacks to "past" glory (which, like you said, wasn't really the "past" at all...it was 5 fucking years).

The fact that Problem was able to make a modern day banger basically using the exact same beat as one of their hits that wasn't even a bit hit is proof that they really had some shit.

Master P was a pretty wack rapper, but had personality. Mystikal, Mia X, Fiend, even a few of the lesser knows were dope though.
