"Dated neighborhood references"

I was 'corrected' by a co-worker that Alphabet City is 'actually' the East Village.

And that Sugar Hill is 'actually' Hamilton Heights.

Am I the only one who still uses these names?

Are you finding yourself living in the past the older you get?

*sips a chocolate Nutrament*

Name a spot that technically doesn't exist anymore.

Ain't shit changed but the name on the mail.

I could probably count on one hand the amount of times I've intentionally called it Veterans Memorial and/or Hollowell.

"Uptown" now, in Philly. That's something that seems to have popped off since I left in '97.

Not that people no longer use those names, just that Uptown is a new thing in Philly.

what does that even mean it's "actually" the East Village?

mount morris/marcus garvey is confusing to me - i thought mount morris was some new isht but apparently it's old and marcus garvey is the "new"

i don't think i'd ever heard anything but marcus garvey but ppl tell me they called it mt morris growing up so i guess that's a revival

i still only say marcus garvey tho

for the rest i will be stuck on whatever it was called in 1985

except for spanish harlem i say east harlem or el barrio but never spanish harlem

I recently took my mom down to DTLA, she hadn't been in a long time. it was one of the first places she lived when she immigrated from Mexico as a young girl in the late 60s

she really tripped out how much cleaner, the amount of whites walking, and the new development

check out these maps

south LA - http://maps.latimes.com/neighborhoods/region/south-la

south central - http://maps.latimes.com/neighborhoods/neighborhood/historic-south-central

so you're right to a point

BUT it's more a "public perception" thing (like calling ourselves "African-American" vs "Black")

when the city government put out memos asking newspeople to stop saying "South Central" and use "South LA" instead is when it became stupid

I just say "I'm in L.A. city, right next to Inglewood."

Hell, yesterday I ordered a palm tree in El Segundo. For delivery, I told him it's L.A. city, but 7-8 miles away. He said "West L.A. near Culver City?" I said nah, maybe two miles east of The Forum...he said "ohh...Inglewood...ok we can do that."

If I had been like "Two blocks from where Reginald Denny got that ass tizzapped" he woulda said "sorry, that's outside of our boundaries"

Oaksterdam was only the area around 17th and Broadway, in the general vicinity of the The Third Floor where the whole MMJ movement started.

The rest of downtown was just downtown.

And I don't know about this whole uptown thing now, but I am lovin the current scene.

Also, watching Daredevil got me thinking. New Yorkers really need to let Hell's Kitchen go. I was there for the first time in a decade back in July. No elements of Hell's Kitchen remain. That shit is reallyl Clinton now.

I've heard "East Village" my whole life and don't think it's dated. I can't think of too much dated shit in Philly or L.A., maybe the odd old-timer's reference ("meet me at the eagle") or some shit but nothing like what's described in the OP

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.
