"Should Lebron be an even bigger star? "

Or do I fail to recognize how big he is?

I feel like at this point, people don't hate him nearly as much as when he first went to Miami, or even as much as they did in 08-2010 when he was failing to make it to the Finals.

He's surely a superstar, even outside the Sport...but I don't know, it feels like he should be even bigger than he is. I know his shoes sell a lot, and he has a lot of fans, bandwagon or whatever.

Would you say it's because of his personality? Or his game not being AS exciting as stars such as AI and Vince in their prime? Or his overall image not being distinctive enough? Like with Iverson, I feel that he had a complete star package, even if he wasn't as good as Lebron...the shit talking, the corn rows, tattoos when they weren't as common, a wild ass crossover.

Is it because his highlight reels make what he does look too easy? Most of us get more hype seeing Vince, young Kobe, Iverson, Blake Griffin, Nique, Shawn Kemp, even this year's Steph's highlights more.

Is it a combo of all of that? Or..is he as big as he is supposed to be?

many of the moves he makes are behind the scenes, not just "put me in this" (shazam is the obvs example) stuff.

he's where he wants to be.

his shoes are only so popular, KD actually sells more shoes, but his shoes cost less.

www.engadgethd.com - the other stuff i'm looking at

Meaning that sure, I feel everyone is going to get the Jordan comparisons, even if it's subconsciously. But just looking at all Sports...for him to be as successful as he is, having two championships, multiple MVP's, and just overall dominance.

If anything, it's a 90's lens...even outside the NBA, seeing how big Griffey Jr, Deion, and even Montana in the 80's were. Just feels like it's not the same for some reason.

or if that is what he wanted. There's no guarantee that he wants to be a 'bigger star' than he already is. But i'm sure if he wanted to, he could easily be involved in a host of goofy crap that would make his star bigger and make him even more money.

His PR team has had some obvious f ups though, that have certainly affected how he's been perceived over the years.

Now did he have the same amount of talent? Or ability to do way more than his frame should have been capable of? Sure. But people also forget that Lebron is like Karl Malone's size, doing shit that Drexler and other SG's could do, and with ease.

He's already instantly recognizable and he's undoubtedly crazy busy, but you don't see him hawking a bunch of stuff or in any really popular commercial campaigns anymore.

I think his last memorable commercials campaign were the Nike ones with the Kobe puppet or him playing a couple characters like Eddie Murphy. Those were before "The Decision" so I wonder if he toned down his personality as a reaction to the backlash. Him and Blake Griffin both endorse Kia but Blake's commercials are way funnier. Bron's are just bland even though he's got the personality to make them funnier.

was more of a boring asshole than anything else (from folks in Memphis at that), but Lil Penny took him to a whole nother level.

And I think what made me think about this is seeing Steph win his first MVP, but being all over commercials, and just showing much more personality as a whole right now. If someone just started watching the NBA this year, they may think Steph was the bigger star...which he has been for this year, but still. The commercials, PLUS his ridiculous highlight reel just make this his year for sure.

And yeah, even with Blake, Blake is bland mixed kid funny for sure, so it makes him more enjoyable to watch. I forgot about Lebron doing those Eddie Murphy type commercials, those were dope.

I agree that it's not a knock but it does seem like someone made a conscious decision to keep his commercials conservative and bland in recent years.

My speculation is that after "The Decision", he didn't want to take any chances, PR-wise, so he's stayed conservative on the endorsement front.

Winning that first and then second 'chip probably did more for his fame than anything off the court, anyway, so he's gonna come out ahead in the long run.

before Beats sold to Apple (and for a while after) his commercial ran 24/7

he's Samsung's guy. they did an app just for following his life and a whole campaign around it during the playoffs last year.

he hasn't gone for a slogan / buzzword ad campaign, and that seems to be a conscious choice.

all of his samsung ads were unavoidable when they were running.

he's in that new amy schumer movie coming out, he produces a TV show and I think has another one on the way, and LRMR is working with a ton of other athletes

Like, Aaron Rodgers has his discount double check ad campaign, and is a champion, and is famous, and has a famous wife/girlfriend. But nike isn't launching new kicks by susprise just by him Instagramming them.

LeBron does that

I didn't agree that he's not in a good amount of commercials, but I just don't think they're as memorable as a lot of other commercials that are out there. They just seem like the usual, "pay an athlete to sell this." The whole Chris/Cliff Paul and even Blake with Kia just seem to connect with folks a whole lot more.

And yea, I am sure it could all be a conscious choice, so it's no knock. Do you think he could/should be bigger, or that he's at the expected level?

to have much bigger stars.

Right now, I can't say who it would be throughout the Sports. Baseball's scandals completely killed that. Hell, the NFL has had a whole lot of scandals as well lately, in every damn way...Patriots shit, domestic violence, child abuse, etc etc.

I don't think Hockey has a single recognizable star like back with Gretzky. Hell, does Baseball have a current one that "even your grandma would recognize?"

Maybe it's something else to it.

the most famous athlete of anyone irrespective of the sport...

He has no rival at all...

And as far as his game not being exciting as other past stars, I have to ask are we watching the same player???

Lebron is always must-see tv because of his rare combination of speed/power to go along w/his otherworldly skills makes him abt as exciting as anyone to come along in the league

Yeah, man, I think it's just you who thinks this way

And I'm not even saying it's boring, but most folks I know are rarely as excited about his highlight reels than they have been of many other athletes.

Hell, remember 2007 when he reached the Finals and they said it was the lowest rated Finals in forever? That completely shocked me, and that's when I first started to wonder about his overall star power. I don't know what the ratings were for the 2011-2014 years, I might just look it up to see.

AI was exciting but I don't think either Kobe or him were imo more exciting to watch than Lebron...watching Kobe was like watching Jordan, only he isn't as good as Jordan was, so he brought nothing new to the game that we hadn't already seen

Vince was arguably the game's greatest dunker but interesting enough, he didn't increase the ratings or road attendance more than Lebron did w/the Cavs when he was there the 1st time pre-championships...

The only reason why that 2007 finals had one of the lowest ratings for the finals was because everyone knew going into that series that it was going to end exactly how it did - w/the Spurs barely breaking a sweat in what was a 4-game sweep

That Cavs team really shouldn't have been in that finals had it not been for Bron going ape shit on Detroit in that memorable game 6 in the ECF...no one believed the Cavs had a prayer w/Boobie Gibson and Illgauskas as his two best players going into that series lol

Why do you think the league was clamoring for a Lebron/Kobe finals? Because they knew it would be ratings-gold to get them two in a series...

I don't even think saying he's "not exciting" is the phrase, but it's just that I've surely heard a lot of people here and elsewhere say that they prefer seeing other players in action. I think this talk came up most about the dunk contest...many people who felt he would lose said it's because his dunks are power, but not as flashy with power like Shawn Kemp, and surely nothing like Vince or even a Jason Richardson. I wish I could find some old posts about it.

Oh the 2009 was super hyped up, and woulda been a great show. I still thought people woulda watched in 07, even though the Spurs have never been a big draw. And I'm still mad at Lebron for letting Dwight beat him that year.

Eh Lebron did all he could against that Orlando squad 38.5ppg 8.3rpg 8.0apg 1.2spg 1.2bpg <---not too much more you can ask of one player when they're giving you them kind of numbers - it was his shooters, Mo Williams, Delonte West, Daniel Gibson, Sasha Pavlovic and the rest of that motley crew that didn't come through in that series and Orlando's shooters were on FIRE: 'Skip to my Lou,' Pietrus, Hedo Turkoglu, Courtney Lee, Rashard Lewis

Now u can't say he doesn't have rings and people love the fact that he went home. His critics can't even debate that he's the best in the world. It recently made news that a Price Is Right contestant didn't know who he was; it was that big of a deal.

His greatness is understood and there isn't much to say about him.

Too much to his image.

He and his crew seem to make business moves that are not tied to a cult of celebrity, which has been fickle as shit toward black athletes.

Jordan was a corporate marketing phenomenon that we will never see again in any sport. Bron will probably be more influential in businesses circles after he retires.

This was back in Miami just before he dropped the Beats commercials he went through a drout where you saw no Lebron commercials outside of his shoes. At the time you were getting all types of commercials from other players (Paul, Griffin...etc.) but no non-Nike ads from Lebron. He's doing more now but maybe he made a conscious choice not to sign a ton of deals. That's really the only thing he could do more of, unless he wanted to get into film or some other medium. He may have a business reason for it...maybe he holds out for larger contracts rather than signing a bunch of smaller deals.

IRT Bron

i.e., he's pretty much shut everybody the fuck up at this point

only thing left for him to do is take Jordan's #1 spot

Bron is the superstar that most folks have been clamoring for

role model
anti-hero ball
undisputed best player
etc...

yet folks WANT to find a reason not to give him credit

like, he's not famous enough = FOH!

It's actually the opposite, if anything.

If I was to say he doesn't deserve his fame, or "he's not even that good, he's in a weak era" like folks say..then yeah, that's that hate.

the rest of his commercials seem like the ones retired athletes do or the local ads

but i think he's a bit sensitive about his image especially since the "Decision" that he's extremely careful about injecting too much of himself into his image...

it's a dual edged sword though...taking no or low risks isn't really going to get you pats on the back from the biz world but the more conservative will eat it up

the most dominant and best scary force since Shaq.

scares the old guard of Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson.

has matched Kobe Bryant and Dwayne wade.

however his Beyonce Diva tendencys has alienated alot of folks and his major even and moves rub some folks the wrong way.

however strickly Basketball talk

the Man is the Greatest Player that I have ever seen.

roll Shaq, Jordan,Karl Malone into one and that is Lebron and yet with a Oscar RObertson ability to be a triple double threat
and his defense is scary.

nothing he can't do. i'm still madd he left my Heat
and I Co sign all that Pat RIley feels, however i ain't ever gonna deny how wicked and a freak of a talent Bron is.

i mean the guy is a smart business man period.

he is also Pro Black and i think he ain't ran by nobody despite being inclusive.

he is a unique Enigma and i can't think of another WorldWide SuperStar who divides so many people espeically in his prime and peak
and the Man is a Winner.

i can't stand no Cleveland, however that Man is scary. he pimps the league and i ain't even tripping, nobody that i have seen as made
the league look easy
and also he been that good as advertised since day one.

he don't play the puppet or the sidekick and yet he blends in
and yet he stays outta sight and controls his thing.

was a conscious decision from him and his team I think. After the "The Decision" didnt go so well for him, and the hate he was getting he wanted to wear the black hat, be the villain, take on that bad ass rebel persona..ect then he found out that wasn;t him as a person.
He couldn't be Allen Iverson..thats just not his personality...

So I think Lebron decided to just keep it strictly basketball for a while, get hardware on the court and also play the whole mystique role that his mentor Jay Z plays, as far as not being all up in social media as much as he used to, not being at every event all the time, not doing a bunch of interviews or commercials not over exposing his brand.

And even though it was a house full of Laker fans, everyone was going for Golden State.

Seemed like ALL the older ladies there hated Lebron. Half of them were saying he's ugly, the other half saying he was a cry baby. Everyone seemed to love Steph, and they were talking about Riley of course.

It seemed like Jordan never got that kind of "hate" from the older crowd. Kobe didn't get that hate til maybe 03-04 from non-Laker fans. Seems like people hated Shaq more than Kobe when we first started winning.

So eh, it does seem like Lebron is a villian somehow. And the worst thing he does is really just his complaining and reactions. Seeing how composed he is when speaking after a game like that is almost as amazing as what he does on the floor...I woulda been waaaay too emotional to speak eloquent like that, after screaming when the buzzer went off.

This is the first year that I can sense people are supporting him more. I never understood the villain role anyways. Me and my SO were talking during the game last night. We were watching his body language and approving how he carries himself. He truly seems like a team-player. He doesn't chastise his teammates in an alpha-male type of way. There's a humility to him that I like more than Kobe and MJ. Also, you get the sense that he realizes it's 'just a game' and that he doesn't have delusions of his worth in the grand scheme of things. Ion't know....I really want to see him win with this team. It's the first time I've cheered for him and I'm hearing alot of other people say that too.

...from fans of all of those teams the Bulls beat during their dynasty in the 90s.

they still hate too.

the Bron hate is somewhat similar - fans of teams his teams have defeated tend to hate on him.

and yes, the casual fan is likely to hate b/c of Bron's time as a 'villain' in Miami based on the way that went down.

fuck you.

He's pretty much unstoppable. Smart player, unselfish, that post game is killer. I don't understand why he's not getting even half of that Jordan love from the endorsements to the fans. I don't like dude causes he's a lame for example that fake Harlem Shake bullshit video the Heat did, someone has video of him rapping along with Eminem during game warm ups. The whole going to the Heat to get rings was weak too and thoses silly Unviewable tats all over dude don't help. But his game is undeniable one of the best ever.

Nothing "great" about what he did in Miami. They did exactly what they were suppose to do (even arguably underachieved).

What does the 30 for 30 look like just about his time in Miami?

When a championship ain't enough to make you great. Someone wins every year.

Great Players need great narratives, and man I can't think of a narrative better than a great player returning to their hometown and carrying his team on his back to a championship.

That shit would be epic and earn him the title of "great"

We don't live in the world that made MJ and MJ...

LJ could be much bigger Space Jam huge but because no one cares about anything outside their little niche he can't capture that zeitgeist

Same with Music, Movies etc..
