there's a plethora of lyrics sites at your service that contain long screeds from mr B. on topics that are much more direct & troubling than what was essentially a standard Louis CK bit

here's a nice tidbit from the very first song that appeared when i did a search

"i'm on a mission for 7 figures to fold, straight out a bitch mouth, pussy & asshole"

that shit is waaaay more foul than anything Louis said...it's pretty basic & obvious too so i'm interested to see what kinda pleas folks are willing to cop here

you seem pretty pressed to argue just off someone asking for elaboration rather than go to a search-engine or try to assume what you mean.

I asked because I didn't know what you were referring to or what you meant by it, didn't care enough to go investigate it but figured if it was something you felt compelled to bring up maybe you might enlighten us.

I don't care enough to be slick about it, if I wanted to argue or have a finger-pointing argument about offensiveness in comedic material or rap lyrics, you'd know.

In response to Reply # 4

It was pretty interesting cause Stern was asking about his writing process and he talked about this one which he was still working on at the time. He wasn't sure if it was gonna be scrapped cause he had doubts that he could pull it off. Imo it was genius.

he's relationship with livenation has resulted in the jigga man doing multiple types of shows:

jay-z/trey songz/jeezy
jay-z/wale/n.e.r.d.
jay-z/mary j. blige
jay-z/eminem (4 shows only)
watch the throne (hov + ye)
jay-z/justin timberlake
jay-z/beyonce

so as you see, he's been doing hits for years. its nice for him to switch up and do the songs for the 'core fans' hopefully the next time he tours he can chill on 'can i get a' & 'hard knock life' maybe..

Dude is just sitting on the peak of artistry. And the past couple years you can see how much impact he's having on other comics. A complete game-changer. It's impossible to overstate where he's at right now.

It was a good night out.

Jerrod Carmichael, Joe Rogan, the chick who played Chloe on 24, Brian Moses and maybe two or three other comics you've probably seen somewhere.

Nothing earth-shattering but nobody that bombed either.

Neal Brennan was on the bill too but no-showed, never really been big on him as a stand-up from the small bits I've heard anyway.

Not sure why comedy wouldn't be my thing, been in plenty of threads about comedy on OKP and I'd guess a few would say they've read some funny shit that I've written here or elsewhere.

As a matter of fact I've recently done a few open-mic 3-5 minute sets at the Store, the Improv and Westside Comedy Theater in the past six months.

All went over pretty well.

Saw a lot of really wack comedians while at those places that have been doing it for a long-ass time.

Lotta presence-lacking, formulaic, dry/quirky skinny-jean/wire-frame/twee type shit.

Comedy in L.A. has a little bit too much indie-rock in it these days (and indie-rock mostly sucks), lotta dull nerds and narcissists who travel in boring self-congratulatory cliques but shit goes in phases.

Haven't been up in a month or two due to being busy with a new job and having previously made a decision to try writing real material rather than just jumping out with no parachute, getting by on balls/energy.

Couple more weeks, got a rough sketch of it, just haven't written out the details or recited/timed it.

Of the club/theater comics, I generally just catch people by luck of the draw outside of someone that you'd have to plan ahead for tickets for like a Chappelle.

Because in LA you'll probably catch them on the rebound at some point.

I mean I've seen Jeff Ross and Sarah Silverman probably four times and on none of the occasions did I plan on seeing them.

Burr had a few strikes against him as far as me investigating deeply:
1) his podcast doesn't have guests, I typically listen to comedy pods that are interview/convo/thematic format rather than just one person talking
2) the Boston thing.....I just see/hear from too many Boston people out here, particularly when out in Santa Monica.
I used to live in Boston once upon a time too.
I can talk with them but their overall Boston-ness grates and becomes insufferable after awhile.
If you love it that much Sully, please go back there, I'm tired of talking about your new sporting fortunes and Dunkin Donuts sucks.
3) Everyone has been sending me that video clip of him going in on Philly.

All that being said, I know he's a solid comedian and I have heard funny things from him.

probably not.

I like Carmichael some, thought his special (while not a classic) was better than some of the people I saw killing it give it credit for being.

CK is cool with me, haven't really loved his TV series (Lucky Louie was kinda painful with the production, Louie didn't grab me in early shows so I missed a lot of the middle season work when I'm told it got better) but I like him as a stand-up, on SNL and in radio/podcast spots.

I get that he tickles the OKP funnybone in particular, but there are wide swaths of Americans that do not even know who he is. That said, I never miss his show and I love it to death

I know people who experienced molestation as children, and I don't
think they should have to hear somebody joking about it in such a way
just because they wanna watch SNL.
Basically, I think somebody should speak up and it shouldn't have to only
be survivors. Speaking out on their behalf is an act of support.

that's fair

but there's a lot more to consider

it's a comedy bit...the discomfort was used to make a point...which is just that it's insanr how far gone child molestors are as far as not caring about the consequences of their actions

but people want to, as usual, be reductive & focus on the discomfort & the surface (headline: louis ck compares molestation to eating candy) rather than, yknow, get the joke & look at what the dude is actually like, trying to say

but the outrage brigade never met a baby they wouldn't sacrifice to toss out the bathwater

But he is a comedian at the top of the game because he was willing to take that risk.

Eh, there's more to being at the 'top of the game' than that.
Corey Holcomb been doing risky humor... Tony Roberts too...
I don't think that's what places you at the top of the comedy game.

I think that viewpoint is problematic. I'm sure someone found Imus'
"nappy headed hoes" comment funny or when Kramer yelled "nigger" at
some Black folk. Something being funny to you don't mean it's cool.
Kids was on twitter laughing about another kid getting shot in the face.

somebody chose to make a joke about it.

when your brand is molestation jokes and you have to say "Im talking about child molestors, not me", maybe you should reconsider that material

people laugh at that molestation jokes because they're "supposed" to, the unspoken element is "this is his type of humor, so we have to at least try understanding why we should get a kick out of it"

Andrew Dice Clay was doing a chauvinistic character, I prefer that to "let's be open minded and play devil's advocate about ruining children's lives"

Like Chris Rock said, he can't do college campuses anymore because they want all PC jokes.

Was it wise to do it on national television? Probably not. But I don't mind the 'this is fucked up' bomb thrown since it's becoming a rarity.

Now this is an interesting angle; I wonder if Lorne knew of his routine before hand and gave his personal approval. With advertisers and dollars to consider, that is somewhat risky material.

I can't imagine them sending a memo to Chris Rock, etc to write down the jokes they plan to say so they can be cleared...it would be like, "No motherfucker, im doing YOU a favor" lol.

Do you think Louis CK is known for his shock humor?

Funny thing is to me the joke sounded a lot like a Chris Rock joke about how molestation wasn't such a big deal back in the day.

Do you want to opine on whether that joke was really funny or if people were laughing because it was Chris Rock?

>that isn't something I can laugh at, to each his own though

they laugh because it's funny to them. it's funny to them because Louis CK said it

both are valid.

>Do you think Louis CK is known for his shock humor?

by his fans? definitely. some of the stand up portions on the FX show centered around the same type of humor

I dont remember a Chris Rock joke other than "if you're black in America, it's like the uncle who molested you and payed your college tuition"

so if there's another joke, I cant speak to that

Many people in this post already said they don't check for CK but found it a funny joke.

It's okay to not like the joke and other people to sincerely like it.

i mean they don't, like at all. that's why it was very risky material. and not one is trying to get a kick out of it. the comedy is a vehicle that creates levity out of that real lived pain.

yes. Louis CK's "brand" is making you think about edgy topics from a different point of view. I haven't seen a ton of his comedy, but most of what I've seen is just that. you're a fan clearly, dont let my point of view bother you so much

Fruitvale Station was 2 years ago, why you still remember me being uncomfortable watching it is beyond me (other than you're a weirdo). but Im 99% sure I didnt use the term poverty porn because the movie didnt surround Oscar Grant being poor (from what I know, I still haven't seen it)

I probably used "tragedy porn" and yes I dont need to see a reenactment of his murder. The same reason I wont watch Django or 12 Years A Slave. I hope all of this is okay with you, same for my discomfort with molestation jokes

this is some chicken or the egg shit...

he's been pushing the envelope from jump street

if you saw him for the first time and laughed at his shit...u thought he was funny

my girl didn't think it was funny...she doesn't like dark humor

that's it...this particular joke in question was funny but honestly wasn't as well executed to me as some of his previous edgy jokes...he's been toying with perspective his whole career it seems like so making this about his brand is some odd fuckery

I was surprised because everyone raved about him and his special was decent but nah..

he had a joke that fell so flat I think he just tapped out and ended his set early.

whether its from Jamie Foxx or Patrice O'Neal
all the stereotypes of primitive, civil war, click sound language stuff.

alot of it is downright offensive to my sensibilities.

and yet i don't want them to stop doing it if they get some "good material" out of it.

comedy will offend somebody (fat and poor people used to be the default safe joke zone)
i just don't believe in sacred cows in comedy.

louis ck worked the hell out of the angle.
the source material is questionable but i can respect the craft of working through it.

like I got the point...yeah it must be awesome to child molesters but i can understand how ppl who have suffered from those types of trauma would feel a certain way. But for all we know, Louis CK could have been molested and now this is how he's coping?

idk. i haven't been so I can't call it. but he did touch on a great point...no one would choose that life so it has to be something extra sensory about it to make it hard to resist.

There is a mean-spiritedness to it. Plus, I resented the hell outta the fact that repeats were aired after school during primetime tweens tv slots. It's the only show that I outright banned for the kids and I tend to be pretty liberal about viewing material like nudity and coarse language. That show was bad for kids on a deeper level.

because toward the end (after the israel and palestine thing) he kinda just winged it...i think most comedians write out what they want to present but given the vibe of the audience, they go one way or the other...it just wasn't smooth so I felt like he just went for it since ppl seemed receptive to his other jokes.

was just kinda whatever, I generally am bored by dad humor though, maybe that's why I didn't find his 'Oh My God' special that funny.

I like CK, he has become kind of a comedic Radiohead though, where critics/certain fans/circles of peers praise him a bit more lavishly than the material warrants to me.

mildly racist was mildly good.

Israel/Palestine I felt like I've been hearing in some form dating back to Cosby.

The last child-molestor part was the one part that got me actually laughing laughing, mostly I'm guessing off the crowd interaction.

I'd give it a B to Rock's A from the premiere.

shit was actually funny. and I never in my life would think that shit is funny, but I think it's more on the vibe of "WTF did that dude just say?!"

The "mild racism" bit was probably the funniest bit about it. it reminds me of the time that everyone got caught up in themselves with the DC sniper situation. that was the first time in my life I've ever seen a story about someone going around shooting people and after the suspects were apprehended, the collective voice was like: ".... THEY'RE BLACK?!!"

has arrived but refuses to be comfortable because that's boring. He looks at all of this shit as a self challenge... he pulled off a joke about child molestation on late night prime time tv because he wanted to see if he could do it the hard way. People can clutch pearls but this will be a career define moment.

IMO it wasnt a career defining moment.

I doubt he gets bigger or loses his show due to this. More than likely he stays in the same lane and I bet that is exactly where he wants to be.

but more like people will look back and think "that's the kinda comic he was." Like Andy Kaufman or Marc Maron, Louie is a comic's comic.
That kinda comic doesn't define success in the way that someone like Kevin Hart does, just trying to get jokes off, goes for the easy laugh 70% of the time. He wants to experiment, do shit the hard way because the easy way has already been done a million times, no point in doing that. I think Louie looks at comedy like a personal challenge. He likes to handicap himself and see if he can still jump higher than the next man. That molestation joke was a serious handicap and he basically climbed out of a deep hole relatively unscathed and still got the laugh.

And that's why even though sometimes his stand up doesn't make me laugh I always check for him. He's a comic's comic and great at it. Plus even though he denounces it he made Pootie Tang and I love it.

yall some dickheads sometimes

i find both entertaining...but like louis c.k. more bc

a.) dark humor offers more for me personally...comedy, genuine reflection, and thought

b.) other brands of comedy offer only the former for me

i love me a character comic and a physical comedian but they are easily replaceable imho...some better than others...those that can strike a balance are the goats though
