If the first part seems boring it's because she's setting the groundwork for the full story.

I'm not a big Gladwell fan. He comes across as so sure of his own conclusions that I don't feel as if I think when reading him.

I enjoy AJ Jacobs. Loosely the same premise, similar narratives, different conclusions.

Reading the vanishing spoon right now. It's Gladwellish. I have two copies if you want to hold one for a bit.

Black?

Feels like Detroit may be an exception. But most big cities have Black ghettos, and the White folks live in the Rural areas, hence all the Trailer Park stereotypes. In the South, I'm sure there's still a good number of Black Rural folks, but I feel most of them have moved into actual cities now.

Couple that with white flight in general and you had a huge move from the city.

White people were also first in line for land grants for agricultural expansion.

NYC had them too. They're typically the first neighborhoods to gentrify because the gays, artists and pioneer hipsters aren't afraid of white people.

The South, like Tallahassee, surely has them. Not sure about the big cities down there...ATL seems like it's zero poor whites inside the city, but a million in the surrounding areas.

yeah sure you still have poor or blue collar white neighborhoods in many cities, but essentially every single city in America has a Black "Ghetto"...

and this is not primarily because of individual white racism or just the fallout of "slavery" and "jim crow" but much less examined and forgotten government policies relating to urban renewal

there's a quote in the podcast from a former Baltimore mayor who literally said Blacks needed to be "quarantined" from the rest of the city...considering what Baltimore looks like, the math is clear.

I think I understand what you're saying, but the government policies were created by individual racists so I'm a bit confused as to how it's not primarily the result (in part) of individual racism.

The first drug czar said jazz music, black, and Latino people were a threat to white folks and promoted drug use among whites and thus the war on drugs was born. There's also plenty of folks in senate records and such quoted as saying much worse. I guess I mention that as a result of being somewhat saddend that such information is so well hid apparently.

fair & good point but my answer would be what you (correctly) said to me the other day: "white supremacy is the monolith"

individual racism is often used as a way to dodge the reality of systemic racism & IMO individual racism is the only form that has truly decreased in our society even if many are oblivious to racism encoded in our institutions

in the 50's and 60's...and each side was from way different places, Memphis and then a tiny town next to Tallahassee. So it made it easy for my parents to move here, knowing they both had a lot of family here.

My best friend has it the same way, his parents were both from Texas, one small city and one Houston, yet they met in L.A. and both had a whole lot of family here.

and when they landed in Cali and the North East and certain parts of the upper Midwest (like Chicago), they found conditions that were STILL FUCKED UP...but better than what they came from.

so yeah...my peoples left Klan saturated North Carolina to come to Maryland. when they got there, they encountered all the bullshit Jim Crow practices that were in place to keep niggas oppressed...

but the thing is

as fucked up as it sounds and as fucked up as it is

it was a come up. life in Maryland and dealing with their level of racist bullshit was an improvement over what they left.

arriving in Maryland and going through all the bullshit housing and loan practices was still better than where they were...

I'm tryna be better off, not better than...

I've only lived here a short while and I've observed plenty of poor people of all races. I can see how segregation could trick into that conclusion, though.

Why are Black folks subject citizens (well everyone is now)?

Why was slavery legal?

How did European corporations get rich(and continue to)?

36. "Nah the majority of poor folks are white and the majority "
In response to Reply # 8

Of Americans including these poor white ones live in cities. They may not live in the 5 cities any okps consider major but they're living in cities. But they don't live in areas of concentrated poverty like blacks ALSO they live in cities where the cost of living is lower so if they get government benefits and tax breaks they often go further.

amerikkka never shared the wealth with black people.

it gives them a false sense of power.

how you gonna be the richest nation in the world and allow ghettos and hoods and mock a people that you violated their basic human rights. physiclally and mentally enslaved?
