"Muhammad Cartoon Exhibit/Contest shooting (swipe)"

Wow this happened in my home town Garland, TX. LOL @ the "police"

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2015/05/03/at-least-2-shot-outside-muhammad-art-exhibit-in-texas/26849897/

GARLAND, Texas — Two suspects were killed after they opened fire Sunday in a parking lot outside a provocative contest for cartoon depictions of the Prophet Muhammad, authorities said.

Garland's city government issued a statement saying that as a Muhammad Art Exhibit event was coming to a close at the Curtis Culwell Center, "two males drove up to the front of the building in a car'' and started shooting at a security officer.

"Garland police officers engaged the gunmen, who were both shot and killed,'' the statement posted online said.

The exhibit was placed on lockdown and attendees later moved to a nearby school.

Police suspect the suspects' vehicle may contain a bomb and called in bomb squad experts. Surrounding businesses were evacuated.

An officer dressed in SWAT gear took the stage toward the end of the event at the Curtis Culwell Center near Dallas and told attendees that a shooting had occurred. .

A group called the American Freedom Defense Initiative hosted the Muhammad Cartoon Exhibit and $10,000 cartoon contest.

The arena, owned by the Garland school district, hosted a "Stand WIth the Prophet" event in January, NBC News reported.

The cartoon exhibit featured "images of Islam's prophet, both historic and contemporary, and speeches by leading voices of freedom and internationally renowned free speech advocates," according to a press release by the group.

Such drawings are deemed insulting to many followers of Islam and have sparked violence around the world. According to mainstream Islamic tradition, any physical depiction of the Prophet Muhammad — even a respectful one — is considered blasphemous.

In January, 12 people were killed by gunmen in an attack against the Paris office of the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, which had lampooned Islam and other religions and used depictions of Muhammad.

SWAT officers initially held attendees in a room in the Culwell center, while authorities dealt with the shooting in the parking lot. Later, they moved everyone to nearby Naaman Forest High School.

but why the fuck do you HAVE to poke the hornets nest.

the sad part is the people who organized and supported this are just going to be embolden by the fact that cops killed two "radicals" who wanted to kill them over "free speech."

like, (white) people (especially THESE kind - you know what i mean) have no fucking chill at all.

like, you don't even give a fuck about muhammed (sp?) you just wanna do this to prove some sick point that literally has NO FUCKING IMPACT on your life.

14. "So innocent is a synonym for provocateur?"
In response to Reply # 12

>the people who drew cartoons of mohammed.

The group that held the cartoon contest did so only because they were upset that an Islamic group held an event at the public building(god forbid citizens use public facilites if they disagree with the good ol' boys). Knowing that the depiction of prophet Muhammad (sp?) in any form is considered blasphemous by believers, why would you hold such an event other than to purposely "poke the bear"? Let me guess...they have the right to...

They are not innocent at all. All involved are dead wrong.

Someone should congratulate them. Bravo. I forgot all about Jyllands-Posten 10 years ago. And 9/11 before that. And Charlie Hebdo.

Except I didn't and neither did anybody else. So it's not like art for the sake of enlightenment. It's not like these Texas artists' souls burned with this great longing to paint Muhammed.

It was a dare, plain and simple.

So there's nothing innocent about it.

They spent $100,000 in additional security, according to Huffington.

Have you ever seen $100,000 of security at an art show?

No.

Because this had nothing to do with art. Just inciting violence and hopefully surviving it.

How the Catholics deal with things in 2015 is not how they dealt with things in 1130. They were as violent or more.

America isn't doing much to quell islamophobia. Therefore, there are pressures and issues within the culture that the majority does not care to understand. It doesn't justify violence, but it also doesn't help to be like "Ah grow up, it's just a picture."

It's never just a picture on the other side of that debate. Somebody on the other side of that is willing to kill and die over that slight. Just because Catholics aren't like that anymore doesn't mean people shouldn't err on the side of caution as a general rule. Especially when there are so many recent examples of what will happen.

It really is an attempt to incite violence.

instead they have mohammad. a deluded, illiterate, psychopathic, paedophile warlord who aimed to spread the name of islam by any
means necessary.

christianity and judaism also don't have the idea of jihad spread
out amongst their pages, instructing people to fight in the name of
islam to receive a reward of 72 virgins in heaven.

they also don't have stupid rules about not eating bacon.

"stupidity" with the texans' "stupidity."

as if drawing cartoons and killing people for drawing said
cartoons are both sides of the same stupid coin. they're not, at all.

yes, the texans were being provocative - some may say needlessly provocative (not me, though) - but that is their right. they are
protected by law to express their views artistically, regardless of
how offensive people find their cartoons.

that's the whole point of art. do you kumbaya-singers disagree with
south park as well? or any satire that pokes fun at ridiculousness?

"but these are people's beliefs and you know they get angry when
you draw their paedophile prophet! why do it?! "

who gives a fuck about them and their beliefs? do you honestly
think we should "respect" them enough to not draw cartoons of their
paedophile, warlord prophet? "respect" goes out of the window as soon
as you threaten to kill someone for drawing a cartoon.

i kinda like the idea that someone mentioned above. we should
organise a prophet mohammed festival, replete with massive sculptures
and pictures of him doing what he did best: raping six year old girls and enslaving and murdering people. seek to cause as much offense
to extremist muslims as possible in the hope that they will arrive
in big numbers, where they can all be gunned down, like these two
fools were.

paint the people involved in this contest as old crazy racist
white folks who just want to push their christian agenda. i see
what you did there.

except, no. artists from all cultures and creeds were involved in
this contest. the winner was actually an ex-muslim. just because
people are shitting on islam - through the medium of cartoons - doesn't
mean they are bigoted, racist, xenophobic, islamophobic or
mohammad-was-a-paedo-phobic. it means they're pushing boundaries and shining a light on those who attempt to drag us back to the dark
ages.

Freedom of speech does not grant immunity to response. Other links in this post point to the fact they were trolling HARD with a SWAT team on deck. Unfortunately they now have blood on their hands for poking the bear.

^^^ THIS IS FOUL. You don't have to like their religion but c'mon bruh. All of this is completely unnecessary. Why should people give a fuck about you and your beliefs? How about everybody disrespect everybody, VIOLATE, and see how far that gets us as a society. It's ways for someone to take the same approach to you and any that thinks shit's sweet enough to go around taking reckless actions.

This is a bad idea. As a nation, we don't need to go back to that post 9/11 'ism. If someone did the same to the judeo christian god people would lose their shit. NO, how about we not do any of this and try to act like people with some gotdamn sense and humanity.

Why do people feel the need to go out of their way to treat people like shit who are clearly minding their own business? FOR THE LOVE EVERYTHING STOP REPEATING THIS FOX NEWS BS MENTALITY.

society through the use of violence.

should south park not have attempted to "poke the bear" as well? you're

Groups and individuals only tend to get mad at them when it's their 'turn' which is why when that happens, most people will publicly support their right to do what they do.

If the South Park guys decided to exclusively target one group, they'd just be a couple of ideological trolls.

Plus South Park is actually smart and entertaining. They shouldn't be lumped in with bullshit gimmicks like this contest.

i haven't done that once. i've gone to great lengths to explain
that i don't lump all muslims together as murderous, fanatical zealots.

the majority of muslims are good, loving people who want nothing
more than to live decent lives. however, a small minority of muslims
ARE murderous, fanatical zealots who are willing to kill people
for drawing a cartoon.

THEY are the ones who i shit on and i am always glad to hear of
them being killed.

The captions are mildly amusing though it looks more like an updated version of the "Draw me" art scholarship ad featuring a pirate from years ago.. SMH..

If this won, what lost ? Nothing more than a Crusades level trolling event masquerading as an art contest.. "piss christ" was far more interesting, how about mohammad sitting at the bottom of a bottle filled with 180 proof gin or in the shape of a vibrator, now that would be hilarious and certainly more though provoking.

http://www.rawstory.com/2015/05/texas-muslim-ambushed-at-mosque-following-shooting-at-draw-muhammad-contest/

Officials increased security at a mosque in Richardson, Texas on Monday after a man was attacked during evening prayers.

According to KXAS, two men attacked the victim who was leaving the Islamic Association of North Texas mosque at around 10:15 p.m.

Two other men who were at the mosque for evening prayers reportedly fought off the attackers.

The victim declined medical treatment for cuts and bruises suffered during the attack, police noted.

One of the attackers was described as “chubby,” 6 feet 1 inches tall and wearing a black shirt. The second attacker was wearing a black shirt and tan shorts. He was said to have short hair.

It was not immediately clear if the attack had been a robbery attempt or if it was related to the victim’s religion.

On Sunday, two men were killed by a policeman when they opened fire on an anti-Muslim event in Garland, Texas that was mocking Prophet Muhammad, which is forbidden by Islam.

surely it's the fault of his parents for indoctrinating him
from a young age?

or maybe it's the fault of the islamic ideology for promoting that
apostates should be killed?

unless he chose to be muslim of course. then, yeah, it is his fault.

I gave you a challenge, either complete it, admit that you're full of shit, or fuck off. I mean I know you won't...because you went back to that thread and didn't even attempt to explain the insult or back it up, so why would you do it now? Why even address me when I'm not talking to you or about you? Oh that's right, because you're obsessed with me.

Actually you know what, my bad, I shouldn't have insulted St. Dawkins. I know how you zealots get when people insult your prophets.

what happened to you? we you picked on as a child? did some muslim kids steal you lunch money? as much effort as you spend attempting to show the ugliness of a way of life you dont follow, you only expose your own deep rooted insecurities. you need a hug or something? you want to spend your waking moments antagonizing islam, hey i feel for you. it just goes to show how sad and miserable you are as a human being because your only claim to fame is hating on muslims. i cant even hate your incessant need to do white boy shit, i truly feel sorry that no matter what happens you will be denied peace.

80 years from now you wont even be a memory but the very thing you hate with all of heart will still be here. stay on my dick if you must if it makes you feel better about yourself. i will not stifle your need to be a douche.

but it's not like they organised a march through mosques wearing
t-shirts and holding placards with the prophet mohammad's face on.

they organised a contest to draw a cartoon of mohammad. yes, this is
considered offensive to some - not all - muslims, but so what?
some muslims are offended by gay people. should gay people not
express themselves around mosques or in front of devout muslims
for fear of causing offence?

in iran they have started cracking down on "un-islamic," "homosexual," and "devil worshipping" hairstyles.

some muslims are offended by a whole host of shit, and they have
every right to hold that offence as deeply as they want. but they
have no right to dictate what can or cannot be expressed because
it may "offend" their god.

this is the same group that threw months of tantrum protests over the so-called ground zero mosque, and acknowledged even though they were within their legal rights to build it, they should show some decency and move it somewhere else. except in that case, it wasn't a mosque or at ground zero, or had shit to do with ridiculing america.

Let a bunch of arab americans hold a piss on the flag contest, and say "oh it's just like performance art". see how that goes over.

i don't know much about the group who put this on. i just know
that there was a contest held to draw a cartoon of a fictional
religious character. which is allowed. so yeah, it does "have shit
to do with it."

bringing up the ground zero mosque thing only helps my argument.
you're saying it's wrong for people to be offended over the building of a mosque so close to the sight where thousands of people died because of the religion said mosque promotes... whilst caping for people who
are offended over a cartoon? people so offended that they were willing
to kill and die over it? ok, man.

as i said anyway, not all muslims are offended by this. if a muslim
organisation held this event would that be ok?

the reasoning behind this cartoon stunt that they should do it because they should be "allowed" to do it. their issue with the 'ground zero mosque' was that people building it should be decent enough to build it somewhere else while fully admitting they were in their rights to build it.

The distinction here is that they weren't building it for the purpose of trolling americans. That it wasn't at ground zero. that it wasn't a mosque. it was a community center 2 blocks away a a burlington coat factory,

The only reason it was even an issue is because this same group (who you just admitted you don't know anything about) were the main ones riling people up into thinking into thinking they were building a giant fuck-you mosque on twin towers property for the sole purpose of rubbing salt in america's wounds. of course, presented in that context, they got a lot of support. and of course, it turned out to be bullshit.

This smells like the logic behind towns out in the mid West with little to no Muslim presence passing laws against Sharia law... let's make a statement against something "over there" by addressing something that is not a threat over "here".

This is clearly trolling because 99% of the people involved in this "contest" would never even consider drawing a picture of Mohammed if it weren''t for the prospect of making some sort of misdirected statement. What does drawing Mohammed in Texas have to do with what is being done in Iran?

All it really does is offend some local Muslims and add fuel to the fire for the militants.

attempting to dictate what can be expressed, yeah. why else would they
go to a cartoon contest armed with ak47's? they're attempting to
dictate - through violence - what is considered offensive to them,
based on their belief of islam.

i get that muslims make up a small portion of the texas population,
but, so what? this is what got brought up in those charlie hebdo threads.
just because muslims are a minority in a particular area, you can't
mock aspects of their ideology? especially aspects as ridiculous as
the idea that you cannot draw cartoons of the prophet?

i don't get it when people say stuff like this. is islam completely
out of bounds for ridicule? scientologists make up a small minority
of people but they get mocked daily.

i understand that muslims get a lot of stick and people see
mocking their beliefs as "punching down," but we're not attempting
to single out muslims, we're mocking the blasphemy laws attached to
their religion.

There was no effort to ban the drawing of Mohammed in that area so the event was provocation. The reaction was definitely criminal but to act like it was unprovoked is ludicrous.

Nah, in a civil society, you respect your neighbors and don't *unnecessarily* offend them. Sometimes, it can't be avoided because in exercising your freedoms, you might impinge on theirs but you make a good faith effort to respect each others belief (assuming you actually respect and value them)

In this case, people certainly have the right to draw Mohammed but the only reason they're doing it is to piss off Muslims. That's why I consider it trolling. No statement is being made, they're trying to goad Muslims into reacting (and they unfortunately got 2 people to react how they wanted).

>i don't get it when people say stuff like this. is islam

I mean, your use of "mocking" and "ridicule" shows these stunts aren't meant to be learning, constructive events... they're meant to put down and denigrate and you're wondering why many people find them distasteful?

Also, it definitely is "punching down". Scientologists are seen as rich and powerful because of their famous adherents so their ridicule doesn't appear to have a substantial effect on them. It's unfair to them but it doesn't seem to leave a mark.

We know Muslims in America get personally ridiculed, blamed and punished for the actions of other Muslims around the world so their ridicule shouldn't be as breezily condoned.

it wouldn't matter where it was. extremist muslims do not want
cartoons of the prophet anywhere, ever, and they are willing to
kill if their demands are not met.

you say it's "provocation" because the area has a tiny minority
of muslims; does that mean it wouldn't be provocation in a
largely muslim area? if you was doing this in an islamic country
you'd be hurled into the fire as soon as your pencil hit the paper.

plus, what about the muslims who aren't offended by this cartoon? or the muslims that were actually involved in this contest? should their views not be "respected" as well?

i'm sure they're offended by having their voices drowned out by
fanatical lunatics and i'm also sure they find it offensive that they're not allowed to engage in satire because of said fanatical
lunatics.

in a decent, civil society, people don't try and kill people for drawing cartoons. decent people just ignore what they don't like
and go about their day. many decent muslims don't give a fuck about
cartoons of the prophet and may even openly enjoy depictions of him.

this is the funny thing. people are calling me bigoted whilst
painting muslims as a monogamous block that all feel the same amount
of offence in islamic unison.

it's not punching down if your aim is to mock extremist muslims -
the nazis of our generation.

If you're innocent, be cool.
Only the guilty's catchin' offence.

I'm not saying it ain't happen but this shit is weird as fuck. Someone rolls up on an event and starts shooting at the security guard standing outside Don't hit shit. Police (who were where exactly) then take them down without any shots fired on them?

Two days later ISIS claims responsibility and warns of more attacks. But this was more of a reaction than a offensive attack. This should be obvious by the lack of planning on the part of the assailants.

Just saying.

No security camera footage?

It's all over in 10 minutes and no story about a gunfight with the police. They just shot two armed men? Has the security guard spoken out?

I'm just saying the story is sooooo well packaged, without anything corroborating?

122. "Group Behind Muhammad Cartoons Increased Assets by 15,000% in 2013"
In response to Reply # 0

all about making money with hate:

http://bridge.georgetown.edu/group-behind-muhammad-cartoons-increased-assets-by-15000-in-2013/

The American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI), which organized the recent “Draw Muhammad” cartoon contest in Garland, Texas, has received no shortage of attention since Sunday night’s shooting where police killed two gunmen who tried to ambush the gathering.

Beneath the back-and-forth about free speech, hate speech, and the group’s long history of public provocations directed at Muslims lies an important, revealing, and very large number:

In one year, AFDI’s total assets increased by 15,199%. In its 2012 tax filings, the group reported just $3,721.00 in end of year resources. AFDI’s firebrand president, Pamela Geller, didn’t even draw a salary. In 2013, though, the group reported its end of year assets at $569,288.00. Geller drew a salary of $210,870.00.

What’s bizarre is that the group’s tax filings note that Geller is paid that hefty salary for only 10 hours of work each week. That means she presumably works (blogs) 520 hours a year at a rate of $405 per hour.

AFDI paid its vice president, blogger Robert Spencer, $29,461.00, which augmented his $186,237 salary by the David Horowitz Freedom Center, bringing his 2013 total to $215,698.

Board members of the group, James Lafferty, Pamela Hall, and Richard Davis, receive no compensation.

The “Draw Muhammad” organizers may believe that their campaign is a “war” to defend “free speech.” That can be debated. What can’t be debated, though, is the fact that those who are leading this imaginary battle are paid a pretty penny to do so.

you asked: "do you believe that people shouldn't be allowed to draw cartoons of the prophet mohammad?

I answered not at all meaning if people want to draw pictures of a man they have never seen they are more than welcome. However, just like people use freedom of speech to hang nooses and fly confederate flags it is usually white folks baiting people into a reaction like Pam Ghellar or Terry Jones and even you. The only reason she had this conference was in reply to this: http://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/Thousands-Protest-Muslim-Conference-in-Garland-288936351.html

- because its tasteless and basically white people being xenophobic bigot (racist).

>what are you getting so mad about? and don't say "because it's racist!!!" because it's not. white people are muslims as well, islam is not a race.

- the only one mad is you. the only one feeling the need to attack everyone here is you. don't put your issues on me. It is about race, just like white people killed other white people in the south for being "nigger lovers" they are abusing whites who are muslim as well. It is the same racist mindset, you don't see a diverse group of people doing dumb shit like this, you see YOUR PEOPLE a.k.a. narrow minded racist ass white people.

>pamela geller is most probably a racist, but organizing a contest to draw cartoons of a fictional character from an old religious book is not racist. offensive, yes, but only to crazy muslims.

- so all the people who think this is bullshit she pulled is crazy muslims too. That sounds like something a white person would say, I am not surprised. Just fess up to the fact you are a xenophobic bigotry like the rest of them who loves black culture which has heavy roots in islam.

- man please. The Muslims of Garland had a conference in January and all these crackers showed up complaining about it so don't even play that.

where does this scale of offence start and end?

- it starts and ends when you go out of your way to offend someone who does not think like you do.

how far are the limits to what we can choose to be offensive about?

- the only people debating this issue are white people in terms of what length can they go to offend someone.

does this just extend to islam? should we not draw offensive cartoons about
l. ron hubbard? or buddha? or the hindu gods?

- the real question is, why would you want to draw offensive cartoon about anyone? what kind of sick mind, oh i forgot white people got a track record we cant deny when it comes to mental sickness.

it's a contest organised by a bunch of racist, white cracker ass
crackers who are motivated solely by racism and their hatred
for the islamic race.

i'm asking would it be bad if, hypothetically, a bunch of cracker
ass cracker muslims organised this competition? would that still be
offensive to the islamic race?

what about if a bunch of black non-muslims held the contest? surely
that couldn't offend the islamic race, could it? what if black
muslims held the contest?

help me understand

>it's a contest organised by a bunch of racist, white cracker ass crackers who are motivated solely by racism and their hatred for the islamic race.

- no, I am saying it is bad period and the only people who do bullshit like this are white people.

>i'm asking would it be bad if, hypothetically, a bunch of cracker ass cracker muslims organised this competition? would that still be offensive to the islamic race?

- it is easy for you to resort to hypothetical because it is not based in real life. people of color are too busy being oppressed in america to do oppressive shit like this.

>what about if a bunch of black non-muslims held the contest? surely that couldn't offend the islamic race, could it? what if black muslims held the contest?

- but they would not. only white people do stupid shit like this

>help me understand

- unless you lose the mindset of the white privilege to be a bigot you can't understand. just accept the facts for what they are, you are a bigot and promote bigotry.

displaying pictures of the prophet muhammad?

what about maajid nawaz? he's a brown muslim who's stated many times that
he isn't offended by such cartoons and has even retweeted and displayed
cartoons of the prophet muhammad.

http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/jan/28/maajid-nawaz-muslim-lib-dem-candidate-cartoon

is he racist, bigoted, xenophobic and white as well?

- what about him? I am not offended by the ignorance of white people either. Like I told you before when you asked me this question

you said "only white people" do this stuff. i just gave you
an example of a brown muslim who did exactly the same. many muslims
have threatened him with death because of it.

on one show he appeared on - which i severely doubt you'd watch - two
young brown muslims were wearing a t shirt with the prophet mohammad emblazoned on the front to show that they were not offended. maajid,
who was sat next to them, backed them all the way.

has the white man somehow infected these brown muslims with his "mental illness," as you called it?

If you're innocent, be cool.

>you said "only white people" do this stuff. i just gave you an example of a brown muslim who did exactly the same.

- first of all he did not have a $10,000 competition of drawing of the Prophet Muhammad. His cartoons were those of tolerance not bigotry. You need to go check them out.

>many muslims have threatened him with death because of it.

- live in the USA not the UK

>on one show he appeared on - which i severely doubt you'd watch - two young brown muslims were wearing a t shirt with the prophet mohammad emblazoned on the front to show that they were not offended.

- post the link, most likely I wont be offended either

>maajid, who was sat next to them, backed them all the way.

- i'm sure it was not putting the prophet muhammad in a derogatory light like you love to do.

>has the white man somehow infected these brown muslims with his "mental illness," as you called it?

- again, what does this have to do with anything? was the t-shirt of the prophet muhammad in a derogatory light? post the link.

do not try to justify your hatred by trying to act like its no big deal when all you have done is attempt to exacerbate the situation through out this entire post. The prophets chillin' together is one thing. having a competition to see who can disrespect the prophet muhammad because you are mad muslims had a conference revering him is another.

but then again, no matter how much I explain it you are not equipped to understand.

It's the same critique of Westboro church. Is it legal? Yes. But that doesn't absolve your assholeness. Once upon a time it was legal to dress up in blackface and mock black folk.

You cool with public piss on the Bible contests? And this isn't to support the gunmen, but again their actions don't absolve the assholeness of the event and it's supporters.

was made illegal because it is racist. in this instance, a contest
was held to draw a religious character. no hate-speech law was broken,
nor was there any incite to violence.

and of course i wouldn't have a problem with a "piss on the bible" day, lmfao. why would i care?

every so often we get extremist muslims marching through london
"protesting" against the evil west by burning flags, poppies and
chanting songs like "uk burn in hell" and "death to the west."

i've got no problem with them doing this, as they have every right to,
nor am i offended. however, a lot of people are, but you don't
see them threatening to kill over their outrage.

Pete King Does An About-Face On Texas Shooting

By Catherine Thompson
PublishedMay 7, 2015

Talking Points Memo

Rep. Pete King (R-NY) on Wednesday joined a growing number of conservatives who refuse to lionize Pamela Geller, the organizer of a Muhammad cartoon-drawing contest where two gunmen opened fire Sunday in Garland, Texas. It was also a complete 180 from King's initial, full-throated defense of the event.

“I think that — listen, she has the right to do what she did," King said in an interview with local radio station WNYM that was flagged by Buzzfeed. "Just because you have the right to do it doesn’t mean you should do it."

“We want to insult and attack and ridicule Islamist terrorism, and that’s fine," King added. "That makes sense, but to go after a religion in this way, you’re just inviting trouble and there’s no reason. Its one thing to be courageous if you’re doing it for a valid cause, but for the cause of doing a cartoon of Mohammad to me that’s, you’re putting people’s lives at risk for no good reason.”

King's initial reaction to the Garland shooting was more bombastic. He took a shot at Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton for wanting to take "weapons of war" away from the police in a Monday interview with Fox News. He also praised the cop who killed the gunmen after they wounded a security officer and defended Geller's free speech rights.

"We shouldn't be having a debate about whether or not that exhibition was provocative," King said on "Fox & Friends." "Being an American means you can be provocative. This is the First Amendment. We can't sacrifice our Constitution to Islamists or politically correct commentators."

The about-face is curious, considering that King has been far from an advocate for the Muslim-American community. He and Gellar were once on the same side of the 2011 debate over a proposed Islamic community center and mosque near Ground Zero, dubbed Park51. King called the project an "affront to the memory of all those who were murdered on 9/11." He was also notorious for holding hearings on the radicalization of Muslims while serving as chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, which drew comparisons between the Long Island Republican and Joe McCarthy.

imam anjem choudary on whether she deserves to be killed. some good points are made on either side.

pamela argues that she shouldn't be killed because she lives in a free country with free speech laws whereas ajem argues that she should because
the koran says so.

this debate really opened my eyes and i think i now understand why
it isn't ok to draw cartoons of the prophet.

Pamela Geller compares self to Rosa Parks: “I will not abridge my freedom so as not to offend savages”

On Fox News Tuesday morning, host Martha MacCallum interviewed Pamela Geller, head of the American Freedom Defense Initiative, the anti-Islam group that organized a Muhammad cartoon contest at which two gunmen opened fire on Sunday.

MacCallum noted that Geller has received criticism from liberals and conservatives alike, including from Bill Donohue and Donal Trump.

“There’s a war going on. What would have said about Rosa Parks?” Geller asked. “‘Rosa Parks should never have gone to the front of the bus. She’s taunting people.’”

“No, no, no, no, no,” MacCallum quickly interrupted. “How do you make the Rosa Parks comparison? They’re saying that if you want to make a difference, you do it in a, Bill Donohue’s saying you do it in a Christian way. You don’t do it in a crass, crude way by insulting someone’s religion.”

“Yeah, well I will not abridge my freedom so as not to offend savages,” Geller responded.

- older than you are in regards to not needing to blame a whole religion for the actions of a few. If that were the case you are apart of the most oppressive empire to grace the face of the earth. You call your ramblings criticism but just own the fact that you are a white man afraid that your white power structure is challenged by people who don't look with you. You don't even live in America talking shit, now THAT is funny.

that i'm probably more clued up about this kind of stuff than
others on here? yeah, it would explain that. that's why i'm usually
on my own in these threads... lol. not that it bothers me, i enjoy winding people up for the lulz, as long as i've got a coherent argument to do it with.

look at you for example, you've thrown every single thing
you can at me. you've called me racist, bigoted, xenophobic, islamophobic (lol), mentally ill, miserable, and now you're
calling me a neo-nazi. all i've done is say that your religion
may be contributing to a few problems.

you don't even know what you're arguing for anymore. you're
just throwing insults at me in the hope of defending islam.
thing is, i know about islam. i know what's in its texts and i know
about the RADICAL views that SOME muslims vehemently believe.

a lot of people don't seem to be that clued up on this and would
prefer to ignore it - including you - so i guess i'll just have to
remain in here spouting truth.

it isn't the whole religion's fault, but part of the fault is
because of muslims like yourself who choose to ignore issues or shift the blame onto someone else other than your muslim brethren and
the beliefs they hold.

i'm not saying you're accountable for them, i'm saying you should
at least concede that the doctrine of islam may cause a few problems.
not the doctrine that you've cherrypicked your version from, but
the real, unadulterated islam that radical muslims want to impose
on the world.

>look at you for example, you've thrown every single thing you can at me. you've called me racist, bigoted, xenophobic, islamophobic (lol), mentally ill, miserable, and now you're calling me a neo-nazi.

- not everything but just some the traits you have shown.

>all i've done is say that your religion may be contributing to a few problems.

- i guess you believe your own bullshit, you said more than that lil homie.

>you don't even know what you're arguing for anymore.

- i'm not arguing, you are a troll and i have no problem correcting you.

>you're just throwing insults at me in the hope of defending islam.

- no, you are just throwing insults at islam in defense of your childish actions.

>thing is, i know about islam. i know what's in its texts and i know
>about the RADICAL views that SOME muslims vehemently believe.

- yet you lump 1.6 billion people in the same pile and find pleasure in insulting people who dont follow your warped way of thinking.

>a lot of people don't seem to be that clued up on this and would prefer to ignore it - including you - so i guess i'll just have to remain in here spouting truth.

- lol, okay little man

>it isn't the whole religion's fault, but part of the fault is because of muslims like yourself who choose to ignore issues or shift the blame onto someone else other than your muslim brethren and the beliefs they hold.

- and I am shifting the blame of what? That some rednecks decided to insult the prophet Muhammad to prove how Christian they are? FOH

>i'm not saying you're accountable for them, i'm saying you should at least concede that the doctrine of islam may cause a few problems.

- like white people who have subjugated millions of people of color? you first

>not the doctrine that you've cherrypicked your version from, but the real, unadulterated islam that radical muslims want to impose on the world.

- so you are basically saying that the very small minorty of radical muslims are following true islam. that is lake saying to be a real christian, you have to be apart of the klu klux klan. dude please miss me with that foolishness.

176. "The moral problem with a Prophet Muhammad cartoon contest"
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-prophet-muhammad-cartoon-contest-texas-20150506-story.html

It was morally wrong for two men to attack an anti-Islam installation last weekend in Garland, Texas, and no one should mourn the death of these terrorists. But what about deliberately provoking the assault by staging a competition for the most insulting caricature of the Prophet Muhammad? Was that morally wrong? Or was it just a reasonable exercise of the right to free speech?

It’s easy to be distracted by the condemnation of the crime, which should be absolute. No verbal provocation can justify killing.

But it’s also easy to be distracted by the First Amendment. The Constitution guarantees a right to speak. Under U.S. Supreme Court precedent, that right extends to most offensive speech, provided it doesn’t count as “fighting words” that would immediately cause a reasonable person to respond by throwing a punch. Many other countries, including those we consider free, outlaw racist speech or speech inciting racism. The U.S. doesn’t — and can’t under most interpretations of the First Amendment.

But the protected status of free speech says nothing about whether particular speech is morally right or wrong. That status allows me to advocate for child abuse or witch-burning or killing members of a race I don’t like. These kinds of speech are morally repugnant, even though they are constitutionally protected.

To evaluate the conduct of someone who speaks with the intent to provoke a violent response, then, we need to consider the speech on its own terms. We need to ask: What did those who staged the provocation intend to happen? And what were the foreseeable consequences?

One goal of the provokers in Texas seems to have been sending a message to Muslims that their faith may be criticized with impunity. Pamela Geller, the organizer, said she chose the venue because Muslims had previously organized an event there. Geller also said that Muslims generally cannot be criticized in the U.S. because of political correctness, and that she wanted to counteract what she perceives as a new social norm.

The desire to condemn Islam by intentionally offending Muslims is morally unpleasant in itself. Insulting the prophet to make a point is a bit like showing Nazi propaganda to prove that Jews can be subject to criticism: effective, but repulsive.

Yet as moral wrongdoing goes, giving offense isn’t at the top of the list. You shouldn’t do it, but when you do, you’re offensive — nothing more. Compared with intimidation, for example, offense is less wrongful. If offense were all that Geller intended, she’d deserve a stern lecture about civility, not deep condemnation.

Geller also had a plausible moral rationale: to strike a blow for free speech itself, after January’s attacks in Paris at the offices of Charlie Hebdo. Perhaps, it could be argued, some offense is justified in light of the need to stand up against terrorism that is intended to repress speech.

But there was almost certainly another goal at work in the provocation, too. Geller clearly wanted to get a reaction from Muslims offended by the event’s intentionally offensive speech. The point of the offense was, in part, to generate a response.

Perhaps all Geller wanted was to provoke a counterdemonstration that would have drawn attention to her efforts. But assuming for a moment that she didn’t want to provoke a violent attack, Geller could still be held morally responsible for the foreseeable consequences of her provocation.

There’s a moral theory, called the doctrine of double effect, that says you shouldn’t be blamed for foreseeable consequences that you don’t want. We sometimes rely on it, as in justifying collateral damage as a result of an otherwise morally correct use of force.

This moral doctrine of double effect has no place in evaluating a conscious provocation. Geller was trying to provoke a reaction. If the reaction was reasonably likely to be violent, she can’t hide behind the notion that she didn’t want anyone to get hurt.

Was a violent reaction foreseeable? I’d like the answer to be no. Plenty of insults against Muslims go unremarked, and certainly unavenged. Violent attacks like the one on Charlie Hebdo are extremely rare.

Fairness toward American Muslims would seem to require us to say that the violent reaction wasn’t reasonably likely to occur. We’d then have to absolve Geller on a ground she probably wouldn’t much like.

But that still leaves the question of Geller’s own subjective beliefs and intentions. It’s hard to escape the suspicion that part of her hoped to provoke a violent response.

After all, it’s part of Geller’s worldview to believe that Islam is a violent religion. The bus and subway ads she’s paid for depict Islam in terms of violent jihad. She paid for an armed security guard outside the event, suggesting she considered violence at least possible. What’s more, the value of the free speech she is trumpeting is relevant mostly because cartoons perceived as insulting the prophet have been met with violence.

If — and I say if — Geller intended to provoke violence, she did something much worse than giving offense. By willfully trying to provoke violence, she was trying to create a situation in which innocent people could have been harmed or killed. As it was, a security guard at the event was injured. (By the way, the guard who shot and killed the attackers counts as a hero who saved lives, regardless of Geller’s motives.) If Geller wanted violence to happen, her actions were morally culpable — even though she obviously didn’t commit it.
