I never care for it when my current manager does it. It's usually casual here, so polos and slacks are my regular deal. When we have clients around, I'll break out a shirt and tie and look better than they do. So whenever I hear the 'you look nice' comment, I always think 'What, I'm not supposed to? Or can't?"

could be something skeevy. but i guess it could come off that way from a man to woman or shoot even a woman to a man, dpeends on how its said

i just always take it as a small talk compliment, say thanks and keep it moving, i say it to other ppl if deserved as well

and their is something wrong with the people complaining. I am just saying, look at this poll. A majority of people say they always love it. A couple of people say they always hate it. Based on that (and of course its not a proper sampling but for the sake of argument) should you stop saying it though the majority likes it but a few hate it?

you'd be surprised how some of these pressed and/or thirsty and/or old and/or skeevy dudes can come off. i wouldnt worry about it in your case.

I guess this is what it comes down to because I never worried about these issues when i was younger but as I become older and work around younger people who are junior to me, I don't want to be that guy you describe.
