its going to be a year here in august

I'm in the middle. I neither love it or hate it.

my goal is to be as open minded about life here as possible.

seems like the quickest way to get bummed out the city is to hold a static view of what it is/was/will be/could be/wont be

Traffic is OK almost every other time (not including big events...concerts, games, etc). But from 7:30-9:00 and 4:30-6:30, you're taking your life into your own hands if you're on these roads.

I'm not gonna say the blazing humidity of summer because that's a small payoff for no snow & 70 degrees thru most of the winter.

Professional presence, even if they don't all live in one neighborhood. Seems like it's plenty Happy Hour spots, bars/lounges, restaurants that cater to the demographic there. Houston has them too. Ladera was close for a minute in 98-2004, but it's much older now bc younger Blacks don't live close to it.

Transportation...DC, Philly, Chicago, and NY for sure have subways/trains.

All of it. Lack of in some areas, the fact that it's so high in others, and the stupid ass confusing parking signs!

The fact that on certain freeways, or certain areas like Beverly Hills, it's STILL traffic at 8-10 PM. Especially going to Hollywood.

Nawwwww cuh. See, I actually rooted for them as like our JV team in the 90's and early 2000's. They were never a threat, and I liked that you could get free tickets just for going to class or Church, or playing at the YMCA.

Then they got brand new. I already hated how Donald Sterling ran the team, and knew about the fraud and shady shit before he got busted, so I couldn't root for a team he owned. Then, the damn CP3 shit that literally ruined us and made them what they are...THEN their fans got extremely arrogant the second we fell off, even though they haven't even made WCF. They know Staples was built for the Lakers, but now they're arrogant enough to cover up our banners and jerseys???

AND they don't give nobody free tickets anymore and charge as much as the Lakers do...nope! Hell naw, I'm not celebrating those marks.

Part of it is that I only talk to Black women. It surely isn't all of them, but man...and being a DJ makes it even worse. Regular 6.5/10 women have legit stories about dating celebs and rich dudes.

^^^the numbers aint in your favor at all. black women only really hang out in like 3 parts of the city. 2 really if you take hollywood out all together because that shit is expensive and wack. so your whole net of chicks is the smallest percentage of women who hang out the least, in three specific areas, one of which is full of places that are hard to get into. you gotta goddamn be the black ethan hunt to find your queen.

or just knock of some white broad in silverlake or a asian broad in dtla and call it a day.

I get it, but I mean, I know soooo many Black women (and people) here. I can say I am in circles where it's a whole lot. And I've probably got more play than the average Black guy here does with Black women (whether by choice or not). But still...shit still tougher than people imagine it to be.

I don't even deal with the ones trying to get into SBE spots.

man, I admire cats like you. It's hard to stick to those race dating guns. I got a Black homey and a Mexican homey that NEVER dated anyone but their own race. They crushed a couple gringas here and there, but over all fucn Malcolm X and Pancho Villa ass MFers. Just me being alt and an atheist, you know how that goes. For real, was on a date with a woman one time, when I hit her with the I don't believe in gawd, shiiieet, she hit me well I can never bring you 'round my family, and she def cut the date short by 20-30min. Incredible moment for me

In response to Reply # 35

...after visiting for an extended amount of time last August. I have some ?s:

1. Is rent THAT expensive?

I've read the articles and seen plenty of apts that gave me sticker shock but honestly, most of the high rents were in the prime parts of the city (Westside, Silver Lake, Downtown, etc.) that get over on name. Apt rents in most other parts, especially in the Valley, seemed more "normal", if you will.

2. Is the black experience that limited?

I noticed the lower pop. of blacks. While millions of us still reside in the greater area, there's a noticeably smaller amount compared to most of the south and much of the urban parts of the Northeast and Midwest. Does this reduce the variety of the black pop. in the LA area? Are most either 'hood or super bougie (as I noticed) or is there a greater range like in many big cities? Is there a boho or conscious or intellectual black pop. in the area?

3. Is it really that hard to be social?

In a city that houses such a social industry as entertainment, is it true that it's hard to meet people, date and make friends in LA as many say it is? Are people as unfriendly or distant as some say? I know that I didn't encounter many rude or unfriendly people during my time in LA last summer. Most were really laid-back and strikingly friend; very little of the silent hostility and natural isolation of these CT folks that I have lived with for years.

4. Are there ways around the parking?

Shitty and overpriced parking is just part of the big city experience. (As is traffic). But are there any ways to get around the expensive and limited general parking?

get on the interstate to get where i need to go---I ain't going.

construction on the weekend makes all the intersecting interstates come to a halt. a 25 min ride from the Marietta to the Airport via i-285 on a saturday will easily become 1.5 hour ride. It'll take you 2 hours to get from the airport to sixflags via i-285 and i-20.

if you don't know the surface roads, you're fvcked.

Now driving to the suburbs, I wouldn't know. It's extremely spread out for sure. But the 15 times I've been there, I only hated traffic when it was Peachtree or in Buckhead during a Classic/Homecoming/All Star weekend.

139. "No, seriously. And I feel like DC's traffic is much worse than ATL"
In response to Reply # 121

But ATL gives you no other options, while DC has a great train system.

But yeah, I feel like ATL, if the freeway is going 20-30 MPH, people are mad. There's freeways in L.A. where people literally don't go more than 6-8 MPH for a whole 30 damn minutes during their commute.

In response to Reply # 139

DC has 2 stretches of highway that are in the top 10 worst traffic areas...i think LA has 1 or 2 bc it's practically all of LA...ATL is in there bc most of it sucks...

i think the worst list ranks as such

1. LA
2. ATL
2b.) DC
3.) NY or one of them other big ass overpopulated areas

"I’m not a hotep, but I briefly went to an afrocentric grade school, which is one of the blackest—and incidentally, most hotep—things you can do. The instructors, mostly men, wore dashikis and kufis, brushed their teeth with miswaks in the hallways. Like Q-Tip, they were Muslim. But unlike Q-Tip, they were varying combinations of Sufi, Five Percenter, Prislam and/or Nation of Islam."

A tanker blew up on the freeway a few weeks ago and the spot where it went BOOM is the nicest part of the city's ENTIRE freeway system. I guess a gigantic fire is what it takes to get new roads around here

This gonna sound cruddy but I don't want more housing in that area...

I think it can be turned into a mini entertainment district ala powerplant live....cept ...for 'us' ...like it doesn't have to advertised as the black powerplant but something for us....
music venues, shops, restaurants, something like that new SkyZone spot, etc

get rid of Latrobe and Somerset....offer jobs to those who currently live in that area for the revitalization...assist them in relocation

but I don't like the housing idea personally...cuz it will be for Hopkins

fix up the vacants for housing...there is an entire block I used to hang around(Patterson Pk and North Ave) that is STILL vacant as all hell....ery house gone...and been that way for yearsssssssss now

Historically, there was a lot of stuff in that area...right off of Caroline there is an alley that used to be where all the 'cathouses' were on the eastside..that was where Billie Holiday first performed. There were some other spots old heads tell me about too.....Old town as a "spot" would be dope.

Drivers down here can be selfish as hell. I've been hot behind the wheel many a day driving around this mugg.

muhphucka that does everything in his power to get in front of you...and there's absolutely no one behind you.

As if being one car behind is going to make a major difference in where ever the phuck you gotta arrive to.

I damn near wanna rocket launch those bums off the road when they pull that stunt. Especially when it's a situation where you have one car already in front of you and the cars in the neighboring lanes are pretty much neck and neck with said car. You will have that one doofball that will race by you and then squeeze their way in front of you only to not be able to go any faster because they're blocked by the car that was directly in front of you as well as by the cars in the neighboring lanes. A grip of these drivers around here never cease to amaze me with the levels of stupidity they display.

EDIT: I just thought about this. How about when I was driving back from Hilton Head, SC a week ago, this one fire chief (I know this based on the truck he was driving) from Fulton county damn near clipped me and the fam pulling that stunt on the highway? I'm like, damn, even out of town I gotta look out for ATL drivers.

-“What do you do?” “What do you do?” “What do you do?” “What do you do?” The question haunts you. Everywhere you go. Outside a brunch place you’ve never seen before, an infant in a $6000 stroller turns its giant head to you. What do you do? it asks with its eyes. Its mother gives it a piece of organic Swedish flatbread to gnaw on. “What do you do?” she asks you, tilting her head slowly like a bird. Her tone holds no real interest. It is as dead as the flatbread.

-There are only 19 people in D.C. You have dated all of them already. They keep showing up on Tinder with different names, pretending to be strangers.

-There are four quadrants in this city, but the people around you seem only to know of two. “South where?” they ask, their brows furrowing. “South Wormst? I’ve never heard of it. Has it been Made Safe by the benevolent hands of Development?” You are all loyal servants of Development. “All Hail Development,” you murmur in dutiful unison. Somewhere, many muffled voices are screaming.

In response to Reply # 0

I'm sorry I'm an educator who decided to go back to school and this shit is horrible. I can't afford shit, but a room or a space with roommates.

It was good when I was in a relationship, and me and my ex were in the Valley, or just out the City in Santa Clarita, but now, dolo, and a student. I'm'a have to eat up savings to live in a decent spot.

rent for 650 square feet single rooms is reaching the $1500s nowadays. I know OKP is full of middle class bourgeoisie, so this aint your struggle, but it's the reason so many folk move to Palmdale / Lancaster or the Inland Empire / San Bernardino. $1000 gets your a three bedroom house (buy or rent) with a front and backyard.

rent control needs to be a real debate, sooner than later. Or any place I end up teaching college courses at, will have me commuting and enjoying city perks like an amusement park.

ohh and Heart-landers. please go back to your green plains and 85% white populations. I don't want to here about the Cornhuskers, or that 70 degrees is shorts and t shirt weather, or that your Prius is the best investment you ever mind

I def got my house at the most perfect time ever...don't even wanna put it in anybody's face. But if it wasn't for that...eh, who knows what I would do. I just know I'll never be one of those who pays $3,000 for rent for a damn studio.

the only things I hate is relying on public transportation to leave my suburb and the fact that I live in a boring suburb

the walking distance mall (though it's nice, huge and about to become even nicer soon) is the only cracking thing near me

I cant wait to move just to feel like Im around an actual city, even if it's less quiet

but then again Im safe while not far from Hawthorne, Gardena and Crenshaw which are hood, poor and poorer in that order

For the most part, they all snitches.

I hate:

The police because they targeted me for a minute and chilled when they realized it was worthless.

This community is small but surprisingly fractured. Everyone is in their off in their own clique which is kind of surprising.

Motherfucker got killed at an Arbys then this janitor shot up the courthouse a week later. I'm from the hood and used to this but everyone else is shook.

As a Northerner, that annoyed me most about the year I spent living and working in Richmond.

The lack of public transportation was another 'grip' but only a very minor one since it's the South and the infrastructure wasn't built for it.

There's culture and a little bit of life in Richmond but there could always be more. Downtown Richmond should be far more than VCU's campus.

What I DON'T hate: THE FOOD. Best shit ever!

Everything is diagonal, and you can never tell what direction you're going. There are tiny ass streets that last for like a block, and streets that change names for no reason. I feel like I'm pretty good with orienteering, but I've been here almost six months and I never know where I'm going. I'm glad I don't have a car because driving here is a clusterfuck. There is no regard for lanes, if there are any. You have trucks being assholes, busses being assholes, cars being assholes, motorcyclists being uber assholes, and bicyclists weaving in and out being assholes.

On the other hand, the public transportation kicks ass.

Thu Apr-16-15 07:36 PM by Goldmind

Winter in NYC (and Philly, where I've also lived and which has the same weather) is so depressingly cold. I couldn't imagine living somewhere colder or where chilly temperatures linger longer than in NYC. Every January I'm trying to do the impossible and relocate my career to the south lol. And not the fake South like North Carolina and Atlanta, which still experience real winters. I mean New Orleans. Anywhere that doesn't require me shivering as I wait for the G train at 9pm.

But then spring hits and baaaaby? I instantly fall back into the city's arms. I have never experienced anything more consistently perfect than Brooklyn in the spring and especially the summer. If it could be like that year-round, I would probably die of happiness.

That's cold. And in recent years, ATL has been icing over to the point that the city shuts down. A place without real winters has lows in the 50s, and where driving over icy roads isn't in the equation.

we're a small city but there are pockets of other small cities around us...there aren't enough options for getting around between that satellite of small cities. Driving isn't tough, i'm talking an average of 15-40 mins drives between them but if you're trying to go out and get it in finding a designated driver is a pain. wish we had more options, a better train system or whatever. we don't even have Uber up here...that alone would be huge.

Between the people.
No options for free fun. If there is the lack of energy between people connecting makes it a boring experience.
No beaches, water.
No real variety in healthy places to eat.
Not a big on the arts, crafts scene.
Schools/colleges are bootleg and all offer the same programs.

Its just a bunch of fluff...surface level fluff.

In response to Reply # 0

You meet someone somewhere and it always turns out they live 30 to 90 minutes away it seems. Even if you are in the' burbs where you think people would be local, this has a tendency to happen. When I lived in Philly or visited Chicago, both big cities, I would run into the same people all the time. In L.A., you meet someone and after they could be kidnapped and dismembered for all you know. There is just no central area or city feel, and I have to work downtown all the fucking time now. It feels weird and, logistically, it is weird. Social stuff requires a lot of planning and driving, and the whole flaky/always late thing is REAL. It's a vicious cycle between that natural tendency and then actual problems like traffic that make socializing a challenge and dating a headache sometimes.

Then there is just the general attitude. Part of it comes from the mix of cultures, people who can't communicate in our two languages here or just don't have major things like eye contact or the words "excuse me" in their culture. But that isn't all of it, not even close, it's more of a regional thing that goes across cultures. I just don't find people very neighborly here or very polite. There is no formality or sense of community for a lot of people. Even in the milquetoast suburbs, people are more nosy or vigilant than they are sincere. I've never liked the attitude of many people out here.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

at some point LA will have to be broken up into their own counties / sections, ESPECIALLY for the sake of public and charter school system.

Burbank, SF Valley (Van Nuys, Pacoima, Reseda, Sherman Oaks), Venice, Mid City, South Central, Los Feliz, Silverlake, Glendale, Hollywood, WestHo, NoHo, are all their own variants on the sprawl. Sant Monica, Pasadena, and Culver City are attached to each and are their own entities is so strange

That's what kills the locality, and the city is just so damn unwalkable, except for DTLA and Venice/Santa Monica

as for the eye thing, I'm opposite of you. It feels intrusive unless I know you. Stop looking in my eyes like you're trying to eat my soul, we aint kin like that. It can be disrespectful and at times I take it as your trying to test my manhood

(sometimes interchangeable with tech bro's)

incredibly, knowing every long-time resident resents them seems to gives them more strength.

there's never been a more love-hate time to live in the bay area.

I actually live in a suburb east of the river but just 10-15 minutes away.

While I'm technically a native of "the heartbeat", I don't feel much of a connection with the city/area or CT as a state, really.

Why?

I abhor:

the urban decay of the city

the lack of any real culture, amenities, job opportunities, entertainment or real recreation

the lack of intellectual life

the unfriendly, isolated and often hostile nature of most of the residents of both the city/area and state as a whole. It's very hard to meet people here...they're just not open.

the non-existent dating scene

the way these motherfuckers drive and the too-frequent traffic jams

the striking economic disparities that intersect with race (although, in fairness, that happens in most parts of the US).

the sticky and humid summers that (thankfully) end too quickly or the brutal winters that don't end quickly enough.

I can go on...
