"Kara Walker pitcher: What yall think? This damn thing almost caused a fi..."
Tue Apr-07-15 09:47 AM by ThisIs_ATruthThang

So I do corporate sales for my company but everyone here sells, down to the President. So we were hosting a top chef in our showroom yesterday trying to get him to use our stuff for a new restaurant he's doing in Paris....

So in our showroom we have this piece by Kara Walker;

http://www.momastore.org/museum/moma/ProductDisplay_Kara-Walker:-Pitcher_10451_10001_195407_-1_26669_26673

He immediately is disgusted! He's going off about how offensive and unnecessary this thing is. Now note: We are a small but very large company and when we host someone big everyone is there, President and VP of the company. He was ruffling major feathers. They kindly escorted buddy out and gave him the it was nice meeting you. I think everyone was shocked on how that all played out, over a damn pitcher...

Everyone had their opinions. You had the artist prospective, you had the privileged white opinion, you had the I had lots of black friends opinion, and you had the neutral what's the big deal opinion.

Being the only black person there? I kept MY damn opinion to myself.

This piece ALWAYS starts drama every time someone sees it. I personally like it. I like Kara Walker and her work though. I love the irony of the majority of the people who buy the piece are older white people. I think it's definitely a talking piece.

However, lots of people think it's a cheap way that Kara Walker is just making a buck off the derogatory image of the Mammy which shouldn't be celebrated.

Somebody's lying...

And then there is nothing better than to asked those outraged by her art to articulate exactly what they find to be outrageous.

She is deserving of her Genius status.

Her and kehinde wiley are the only visual artist I check for.

Kara Walker's art ignores the historic significance behind the imagery she chooses to depict. Just like using the "n" word, no amount of innovative reconfiguring can change what that word represents; and her slave era rehashing of dehumanizing imagery cannot change what it represents. And Kehinde Wiley lol is a great portrait painter, but his "artistry" is a watered down version of Barkley Hendricks hustled to the masses like fast food. He does the same thing over and over only changing the body and the background. Just saying.

its a commercialized version of what she is KNOWN for

now, whether or not is has a place in a restaurant is up to the restauranteur but i'm not mad that as a sales company/showroom they are giving people that option in general as something they can own for themselves-just like the moma store is doing.

they didn't press him or even offer it to him. he saw it and flipped

outside the art realm....

Somebody outside the art world has every right to be offended....BUT...at the very least they should also have the intelligence to question what they don't understand...because alas...THAT is also the genius and purpose of Art many times...to get people talking to each other and inquiring....

On another note....I don't particularly like her stuff and i'd never personally spend money on it or display it in a place of business unless I had a full time staffer stationed next to it to explain it to passerby...or at least a little sign beneath it explaining the piece.

i don't think any less of "craft" than i do of someone's painting
particularly bc a lot of the "masters" (picasso!) jacked the work of craftsmen/artisans

there's an interesting show up now at the scottsdale museum about afgani war rugs. it's taking a tradition and turning it into social/political commentary. however, there are no specific names attached to each work bc they are made by women in markets. i thought that particularly interesting. is there work any less a piece of art? (not asking you to answer that but this is an age old debate)

he's absolutely correct.

it would create an unecessary distraction.

it would be seen as inflammatory, degrading etc.

and the people at your company would be fools to suggest it as serveware or decor.

If it's a restaurant, he wouldn't come in to just a buy a pitcher. I also said it's on display in a showroom. Not that we presented it to him, or suggested it to him. You're reaching for scandal.

something that resembled and racist piece

because her work is specifically made to provoke a reaction

you can repackage something to look like rape all you want

you can't get mad when someone reacts to something that looks like rape

i'm really disliking the smarmy smugness of her work now being 'in' and poopooing the reaction she purposefully engenders in her pieces on some "oh thats ignorant"

that was not her house
that was a place of business
she is a vendor
showing a client while one option in thousands
there was still an inflammatory piece there

they need to restructure the more inflammatory pieces in the showroom
maybe section them off

And you're arguing it like anyone knew dude was going to get upset. People are different. As I said, it's a sold out piece, dude could've easily loved it as much as he hated it.

Hell I didn't make the piece nor did I design the showroom. I had no dog in the fight. I just thought it was hilarious that dude would be SO upset.

I could understand if a black person got upset, which has NEVER happened but I do wonder why whites get offended by the piece.

I'm defending the company not supporting Kara Walker after agreeing to work with her. The company likes her, decided to collaborate with her and it would be wrong for her work to not be on display with everyone else's work.

I encourage everyone to have their opinion. I'm just saying you can't be mad that it was simply there in the mix.

i'm not sure thats a good thing

currently folks are becoming inured to the word nigga
and we see how thats turning out

context and some sort of responsibility for sensibilities for when a piece is out of context might be the responsible thing to do

Duchamp might be closer if say the urinal was going to be a mug

amusing but gross

this is more Ofili
religion race and sex are hot button issues in and out of art
being art doesn't change that

artists explore those themes
some purposefully to engender discussion and inflame
others to diffuse

simply saying its art does not negate the inflammatory aspects of her work

i understand you work in a commercial field and being a sales person requires a certain amount of tough skin

and seeing your dive for cover (good idea btw don't get btwn white folk when they get passionate)

but we don't live in a vacuum his reaction proves that
your company's reaction simply proves that they are more interested in business than the discussion around the piece and what it actually does when taken out of an art context and put in a commercialized context

i get it you are salespeople
but you are selling things that have context and history

I'm not going to argue art with you. It's suggestive. As I said we have clients that see offensive shit in things we never thought were offensive. It is still art at the end of the day.

It is for sale at the end of the day. It's sold at MoMA, The Whitney, and a thousand other art houses. **shrugs**

i get that to you the salesperson its all the same to you

and i get its not worth it for you to understand cause you have a job

on another level maybe it might be worth your time to understand to maybe anticipate potential explosive reactions from clients

or not

it's not about if some people will like it. it's not about it's popularity. it's not about if it's a high seller.

it's about displaying a piece that is blatantly created to get a rise out of people without having any context nearby to explain it, which can temper initially angry/upsetting reactions. you can't just put it out there and be dismissive when people get upset, especially when you know the piece is created to anger people. it's irresponsible and insensitive. i don't know how else to explain this.

The point is some people LOVE Kara Walker, some people love the pitcher. It is for sale. The piece is in a showroom full of everything. It does have Kara Walker's name, where she's from and it does state that it's a piece to commemorate her installation Sugar Babies.

But it is definitely our most talked about piece. I love it, I love seeing people get uncomfortable and being forced to think and formulate an opinion.

Tell me Mrs. why are YOU so upset?? lolol

Like I said I didn't make the piece, it was here before I got here but it gets attention.

and like I said in another post it seems like you don't like the way this post is going since people are voicing displeasure.

I have taken more than a few art classes and know there is room for all types of art.

What I'm doing is discussing why I'm not surprised people find it distasteful.

and I'm a grown ass man.

to me recently.

I was eating in a restaurant in NYC. The restaurant projected old movies and tv shows onto the walls of the restaurant. My friend and I were one of the few (maybe only) black patrons. Well, one wall showing a movie (Up in the Air) in which one of the characters was in blackface. So, my friend and I approached one of the workers there to try to understand why they were playing this movie. There was another co-worker (a server, I believe), who was Black, within earshot. He joined this conversation and was explaining that the movie was "vintage," "a classic" and that the movie was made by black people. Btw, neither my friend or myself were yelling or raising our voices. We were just wondering why play this movie in a public place. During this convo, the manager approached and explained how their movie/tv projection system worked. Apparently, movies/tv shows are selected at random and projected onto the wall. While the Black worker kept trying to justify showing the movie, the manager left the conversation and immediately turned off the movie.

I think when you get into instances of displaying art depicting stereotypes, symbols of oppression, or anything alone those lines, you have to be extremely careful in how it is displayed in a public place or in a place where the clientele is not predominately artists. Everyone is not gonna care or take the time to dig deeper and be inquisitive. Because certain images evoke a visceral response, it's got to be expected that context should be available to explain the art, especially if it the intention is to be provocative and to agitate.

i'm curious to know if you're more outraged by the image or the price?

if it's the price, i find that hilarious bc we definitely sell a negative stereotype of ourselves for much less.

I usually don't like to argue with folks over art. ESPECIALLY in my line of work because sometimes people just be seeing shit in a DIFFERENT way. I be like, "Huh?" sometimes.

I participated in this discussion instead of sat back and watched like I normally do because I totally didn't expect people to take it like we knew that the chef was going to see it and get upset. Or see it at all. It's a very large showroom. You could easily not visit the artist section, especially because he came regarding his restaurant. There's a hospitality sort of section of items for hospitality. But as I said we sell everything. Everything is for sale for those who see fit.

she's great at making folks (both white and blk) feel uncomfortable. in some ways i think that's powerful, but on the other hand, you can desensitize people if you are constantly trying to shock them.

everything that's happening in this post is what she wants. is that manipulative? yes, but most artwork is manipulative.

you'd have to live in a little artsy or black boho bubble to think most people even knows who she is, much less what her art is about.

Van Gogh wasn't known in his days either. He was more niche and a lot more BROKE than Kara is in hers

Kara's work is better known in her lifetime, than Vince's was in his

Van Gogh is a direct product of pre-modernism rising the profile of art during the beginning of the industrial age.

"You" only know Van Gogh, and his images, because he has been reified and a strong figure in the art cannon alongside Cezanne, Gaugin, Matisse, Millet, and Picasso

I'm pretty confidant Kara will be part of the POST-post-modernist artist covered in Art Survey and History classes. 10-50 years down the road. She is one of the three, maybe four Black artist, the Art world has celebrated and fetishized since Basquiat passed in '88

where kara walker will be famous. you're trying to school someone who took enough art history to qualify for a minor in the topic at most universities.

she is not a household name and it's silly to expect everyone should know who she is and what her work is about.

Kara Walker is very well known right now, in most art circles, and beyond. art circles from Van Gogh's time to now, are relatively small.

Kara has been on the cover of near every major art mag in the US and internationally for most of the 00s

most folk couldn't differentiate a Van Gogh from a Millet or a Cezanne, much the less properly name any Van Gogh work outside of Starry Night, his Irises or Sunflowers. he is known TODAY because buyers, scholars, and academics agree he is a great artist and important to the scope of post-industrial age western art. He's been reified!

Kara's work will be there just like Van Gogh's in the future, MAYBE not as popular, but few artist are as popular as Van Gogh

like I said above, you didn't think it through and made an awful comparison

but i do think that is the response people are now having for folks reacting to her work that are unfamiliar with it, or yet still have that response to it even if they are familiar

and yes while its yet another level of response engendered by her work that is interesting

but as a real life application on that level i don't like this aspect of how folks are using her work

you don't think she planned this?

seriously, i have no doubt in my mind that all of this discussion, all of it, is what she's going for.

its like her secretly (creepy!) filming ppl at her sugar baby installation. she knows what she's doing.

does that mean it's all good? no, but she's getting a reaction which is what she wants.

people will talk ad-infinitum about pretty much anything these days(tied to everyone feeling like their opinion/view matters and deserves to be heard). so I dunno about all that "discussion proves..." business

past that, the idea that "we" will sell negative images of ourselves for less than $400 doesn't justify doing it at all. unless you're on some "might as well get paid off it too", which is.....i dunno...a *bit* of a perpetuation of the problem at best. i'm not personally a fan of "less bad than" as justification, but *shrug* on that cuz i recognize how I think isn't how most folks think

We were shocked that his dislike for ONE pitcher took over a BUSINESS meeting and made it impossible for this man to continue. Like I said, yes people have reactions to it but they were going at it for some time.

There was a time that every opinion had been voiced and people wanted to get back to what everyone came for. He didn't. This can't be an all day thing. He had to leave.

are troubling

museums and galleries can be great to archive, catalogue, and even celebrate artist, singular works, or movements, but it's not the only place art should exist

I guess, workers and public places should have trigger warnings for works of art, but I generally don't care for trigger warnings either.

We must all prepared to have conversations about cultural productions that may conjure visceral reactions. If you can't handle that, remove the piece, or yourself.

I do agree with LFresh's analysis of Walker's work though. I'd go further to ask if she's even cognizant of becoming a token within the VERY SMALL art world? and that her "provocative" images are rather comodified and neutered".

and it would be ridiculous to put a pitcher with 19th-20th century mammy imagery in say a 21st sushi restaurant in paris, unless you want people to talk about the art and not your sushi. There is a time and place for everything and designers will get mad if you use a 19th century font in a book about Shakespeare.

just context

just an understanding that given this countries history
her imagery as well as other other artists may have a response

maybe a disclaimer to people coming to the showroom
a bit of a heads up?

dunno

i sounds like they frogged marched dude out (i'm being hyperbolic) when he became offended
and i'm not comfortable with that either
glad he didn't damage anything
but still

but yeah business never has time for your sensitivity or feelings

and her work.

anyone seen sugar babies, she did a warehouse in NY.

had a sphinx with a visible vulva and some more shit.

I think the Sphinx even had a mammy head.

she's making a point. it's not just pretty pictures.

the point she was making was out of context as a lone pitcher with a mammy head on it.

i mean, i don't know the artist intention exactly, but what i get out of it is the irony of having this caricature on a pitcher when the type of person its a caricature of stereotypically would be using a pitcher to serve (probably white) people.

i like when artists do that kind of stuff (assuming this was the intention). i don't mind being made uncomfortable (or at least being forced to mentally deal with complex, sometimes troubling issues) by art.

i also understand that some people can't deal with this type of stuff and will only find it offensive.

"if i don't like it i don't like it, that don't mean that i'm hatin" (c) friendly negro

lots of things to unpack in this poast. for one, it was in a MoMA showroom. regardless of the context, if you are in a modern art gallery showroom, there should be a pervasive subtext that you are in the midst of some eminently artsy fartsy shit, and some shock value (read: modern) is prolly lurking thereabouts.

HOWEVER, i daresay, even the defenders of the piece would admit to feeling a different way if the artist was listed as Paula Deen as opposed to Kara Walker?

why, that is a mighty fine stylized pickaninny serving set you have crafted there, miss dean!

so that's the 'a' versus the 'ER'. who said (created) this piece? and why?

we make those distinctions.

AND, if the hearer (or seer) does not appreciate the subtleties of the 'a' and enjoy it on an 'ER' basis regardless of artistic intent, do we feel a way about that? (The Chappelle Dilemma).

years ago, i remember it was a thing among the black middle and upper classes to collect objects of derision (caricature, mammies, watermelon eatin kids, lawn jockeys an shit) out of a context mixture of motivations: 1) never forget, 2) i'm rich enough to buy this shit so YOU cain't, cracka, 3) its funny now that we can drink at the same water fountains...

and i remember seeing ppl buying and selling that type of shit at flea markets and wondering if yt who was creating contemporary knockoffs of these big lipped bargains was in on the joke or nah. or if they were getting paid and thinking to themselves, 'dumb ERs'.

*shrug*

Their clients are OUR clients. We have more than a few our collaborations sold there. We fill ALL their orders.

That's why I'm saying to you, people KNOW Kara Walker, both inside and outside of the art world. I see them and answer all their dumb ass questions all day about EVERY artist not just Kara Walker.

There is a description and a photo of Kara Walker right beside the piece.

And again no one is mad at no one for not liking the damn piece! Lol The post is centered around the fact that the chef could not be calmed down to conduct business. We encourage everyone to have their opinions about art. As I mentioned everyone (except me) went in on the topic. Some agreed with him, most didn't but there came a time where people were over it.

I don't know why people are mad just as much that people like and are willing to pay for her work.

The mammy sugar sphinx was brilliant.
Selling bullshit 'extensions' of the art piece to be used commercially though?

Kara Walker's design for the pitcher and the act of selling is also something an opportunistic non-black racist asshole would do.

I don't see how Kara Walker's 'blackness' is adding anything substantial to the 'art' of this pitcher.

Can anyone explain this mess to me?

fuck

that's the point

look how naive, materialistic, and unreflective these ELITE white people, people of the art world are. they are willing to monetize this piece in the name of art

it's smart because it's nuanced, and layered.

ultimately I'm with you legs. it's "tap dancy", but really more so pretentious. it's why I've never been a big fan of her work. co-opting ante-bellum through Jim Crow imagery to make a statement about the white gaze.

this works for her, but it's highly charged work
look at how folks on here went apeshit
the point is to get a dialogue going, and clearly that worked

do we have to like her method? not at all

i understand what you mean when you say tap dancy. i've heard that criticism before. while people said her sugar sculpture was the most amazing piece, there was also some criticism about her use of imagery and her constant use of the mammy figure, particularly putting serving "pussy on a platter," as i heard one person describe it, lol.

its suppose to anger you, draw a reaction
honestly i would be more disturbed by people who had no response to her work

you are suppose to feel disgusted, as slavery was a disgusting and deplorable part of history that still affects black folks today. she's trying to take a specifically loaded method of making images (antebellum silhouettes) and making it contemporary to show how slavery still impacts blk folks and race relations in this country.

i think one of the most powerful things she's created was the book about katrina. i believe the met in nyc owns a copy so you might be able to view it there.

i say all this to say, i don't necessarily like all of her work, but i think artists like her are necessary. i like that she makes white people uncomfortable when they have to face their history, their privilege and how they continue to benefit from a dark period in world history. her images are subtly aggressive and that takes a lot of finesse to pull that off.

i just wish she'd move on and show what else she can do. that's really my only criticism.

i do think its very necessary to talk about historical- and especially an critical discussion of the black codes era -

(which i think is where she draws quite a lot of her narrative from)

but also contemporary issue surrounding race and racism
i also dont have an issue with the imagery she uses - the mammies picanninies coons
(i really liked the film book with a somewhat similar title)

it was the content of some of that work that i did not understand what it was getting at
especially when i think about the antebellum south

For example the most disturbing piece for me was drawn from (google alert): ``Gone: An Historical Romance of a Civil War as It Occurred Between the Dusky Thighs of One Young Negress and Her Heart,''

some of the notes she had on display...

the (grotesque) sexual imagery - that to didnt seem to really go anywhere

this is where i say i dont get it-
i dont know if that work was only there to inspire anger and disgust
(and to be honest i did feel as though some of it was quite revisionist)
i like to think there is a desire to provoke dialogue on america's past.

this work did not do it for me

>you are suppose to feel disgusted, as slavery was a disgusting
>and deplorable part of history that still affects black folks
>today.

ya i certainly did not get this from her work.
like what was the point of the consentual black/white (sexual? romantic?) relationships at the crux of the young negress story?

this is why i say i dont get her work- maybe i should say i dont get the purpose of her work
not in this particular installation
and i havent checked out what she has done since.

its not only about the past. a lot of the work is very contemporary. its like using historical imagery to discuss as history as it relates to current events and how those historical events impact us in the present. the very discomfort she creates in some ways mirrors the discomfort most (white) americans feel when the subject of race comes up.

if you do not own your body sex can never be consensual. i think this is an overlooked statement that her work makes.

Though this may have more to do with the current president
But I do get the impression that folks viewed her work as quaint from the past type deal in 08
But since issues have come more to the fore front in this country
Or maybe just a resentful awareness
I think her agitation or button pushing might blend in a bit more
Can't call it

It was a hey this still bothers yall
Then less believed that
Now more are willing to believe?
Dunno
Either her main point don't get comfortable
And talk

i mean i get controversial, but it just seems pointless if i also dont get what the message (or controversy) is supposed to be about.

i just figure her work is really not for me

i myself would never want to be god,or even like god.Because god got all these human beings on this planet and i most certainly would not want to be responsible for them, or even have the disgrace that i made them.

the message i've gathered is some of us have become comfortable and complacent with this undercurrent

don't know if you noticed but there was a good segment of the population then that thought racism was behind us
we joke about the term "post racism" now
but it was only a few years ago folks thought we were good
her work pokes at that specific spot in a subtle but vicious way
and makes folks play this out with their reactions and reactions to the reactions

and its okay thats its not btw
we've discussed this
