i think that's true of every show though, not just black shows. and also i find it interesting that the minstrel show later influenced TV so profoundly that white characters were made to look stupid in the same way (think three's company and shit like that). that's not to undermine the classlessness and racism of minstrel shows, but more to illustrate that their gags worked, i guess.

Because dressing as a woman isn't a simple, stock comedy trope employed by actors for ages.
It's 2015 and a drive for diversity is sort of a thing. Gay characters are on TV now, not just black shows. People who work on "black shows" are likely to be more aware of the overall need for diversity.
You sound like white people asking if it's a new rule that every show include a black or Latino character.

I'm straight and Black. My demographic hasn't mastered our image. Yes, we can all be together and that's ideal and cool, but the OP is about why it seems every new Black show has to be inclusive. Hijacking a movement I'm invested in. Full representation across the board is the ideal, but for me, I would like to see my demographic fully developed and explored. And yes, this is self-serving.

Whoa whoa whoa - what happened to the period where there's an exploration of the possibilities that can be had by fully integrating the true Black experience in media? It doesn't have to be all slaves and gangsters. I don't believe we've gotten there. And now we're skipping that possibility to get to all inclusive - which is cool on one level. But I never got the exploration I would like to see. Where's the family drama in an affluent Black suburb that doesn't get soapy? Where Black people are treated like real people. There are movies that presume you'll watch whatever bland bullshit because white people are doing it, but there's less likely a chance the same movie could have a Black lead. Why couldn't there be a Black The Kids Are All Right? That doesn't happen until Black people are seen as people instead of caricatures. That's the difference between Get On Up and Selma.
We haven't gotten to a place where I feel Black people are respectfully depicted consistently. While you doubt it's possible, voting rights weren't possible at one point. LGBT has Logo and a category on netflix, so it's not like your demo isn't being served.
Simply put: I want my demo served, we're not there and I prefer to focus on that goal.

or they are a different shade of black folk? i dont quite get what you are saying. i do agree that we need less stereotypically 'black' shows but i dont see how that necessitates excluding black gay folk (but we can/shoud exclude depictions of gay stereotypes)

I'm not an authority on the world view, only mine. With that in mind, there's steps to getting to the point of portraying all Blacks respectfully. It's a matter of time before gay Blacks are treated with as little respect as straight Blacks. I say we should get our ducks in a row. I know we're all one, but straight Blacks is the beginner level and gay Blacks is advanced. I want to get the beginner level down before moving on. And I'm not saying gay Blacks should be ignored or excluded, but we definitely skipped a step and I'm also suggesting that gay Blacks will be painted with the same broad strokes as straight Blacks if we don't watch out.

^^ I think that's where you're losing most people in here. I *kinda* see where you're coming from, but I think you need to explain why you feel straight Black is the beginner and gay Black is the advanced. I think it's important to explain why the respect of all Black people can't (or shouldn't?) be achieved simultaneously.
