In this case, the man who can’t pull other women is a desperate attempt to validate their own choice. If he can’t pull these other women, then that means he must not be all that great. If he can pull other women that validates her choice in that particular man. None of this has anything to do with the true value of that man OR his true compatibility with the woman who chose him. It’s no different than buying a house/car/appliance simply to keep up with the Joneses.
I’ve seen the same in men- guys who want the girl that all the men want, primarily because all the men want her.
That’s how the so-called ‘nice guy’ winds up pining for the hot girl who pines after the bad boys who mistreat her, because he thinks that he’s somehow the only one really knows her when he’s really too blinded by her beauty to see that she’s just plain shallow (and/or just plain doesn’t like him). That guy is oblivious to the fact that he’s really just as shallow and truly no better than the bad boy the hot girl keeps chasing. There’s also a hero complex embedded in that, but I digress.
In the end these people ultimately see their partner as a status symbol, a trophy to be won and displayed so as to validate the “winner”.

I’d say this tends to manifest differently in men and women
Each seems to have particular tendencies with this, but anyone saying this is strictly a female thing is delusional. To me ‘nice guy who wants hot girl who wants bad boy’ and ‘girl who wants guy that other women want’ are pretty much the same.
Granted those are two generic archetypes used as primary examples, but people in general can have some truly fucked up ways of measuring prospective partners and can be petty as all hell when it comes to what disqualifies someone from contention. I will say I’ve seen more of the petty disqualifications come at the hands of women than men, but I’m a man and generally less likely to see quite as many from the female perspective.
I’ve seen women disqualify men because they still eat Cap’n Crunch, which is borderline un-American if you ask me. I can’t think of a single instance where a guy I knew dumped a girl for some shit like that, but again, I’m again a guy so I’d naturally see less of it from the female perspective.
