The Detroit writers and activists who founded the organization in 2012 did so with the intent of providing vocational training to local youth who would renovate vacant foreclosed homes. Then the homes would be given away to writers. This wild idea has taken flight since its conception. In September of 2014, we awarded our first home to a poet & historian named Casey Rocheteau, who has since settled in to what she calls The Brave New Home.
Write A House’s homes are located in an active, creative and diverse neighborhood of Detroit. This neighborhood was chosen with great care and deliberation. We’re not seeking to push current residents out, or drive up rental costs; we’re looking to invest in and help stabilize the area. This city has seen enough displacement, and we seek to build with conscience. We’re looking for writers who want to live and take root in Detroit and become a part of its rich creative landscape. It doesn’t matter where you come from, even if you already live in Detroit. If you are a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident with a valid Green Card, we encourage you to apply.
We haven’t heard of another organization quite like this, but then again, there’s not another city quite like Detroit. Write A House champions literary arts, vocational education, neighborhood stabilization, and the creation of more vibrant cities. We’re sure that you will too, so don’t be shy, GET INVOLVED . Write A House is a 501(c)(3) organization, and all contributions are tax deductible.

he convinved ababa to move there and she left becuase she couldnt' run a business there because she didn't have electricity half the time. i had a package sent to detroit that didn't get a delivery scan. extremely unusual and it means i was going to have to refund the $100 north face coat i sent if the customer noticed. called the post office 2 days in a row and their computers were down. that's some third world country shit. I ship all over the world without tracking or insurance. detroit i have to put insurance on packages because they don't scan packages like the rest of the western world.

I work outside and my company is cheap and usually tell us to suck it up because working outside is what we signed up for but they bought cases of hot foods and hot drinks and put out memos MAKING us come inside after 5 minutes outside

My sister is a school SW and has had ~10 days off the last 2 years because the windchill was below -15 during the time kids wait for the bus.
But in 11-12 i was wearing T shirts this time of year and shorts at the end of March.
Normally speaking over the course of my life, highs in the 20s are normal for DEC-JAN-FEB, and there is always a stretch in January when it gets close to 0. These polar vortices have been fucking us up for the last 2 years.
All that is balanced out with a truly fantastic summer and 4 moderately well defined seasons. Fall is pretty great.

Detroit is usually pretty bad when you get an arctic blast.
I remember Detroit Public Schools kept schools open unless the temps hit 0. During high school, there were very few days we got off because of that 'cause we were still going to school at 2 degrees.
The last winter I was there had some pretty lengthy stretches at or just above/below zero with the windchill at like -10 or -15 degrees.
