>LL overall was corny

It's a Top 5 declaration/battle rap song. Lotta emcees fell back when this dropped. Plus Marly Marl's beat was better than the Bomb Squad's.

>LL overall was corny

a deep amnesia in the air or somebody's just too young to know.

From the time LL hit the scene in 1984 with "I Need a Beat" to the early 1990's, LL's was more than just "relevant"; he was one of the leaders of the pack, always up front with the best of his peers of the day, from RunDMC during his debut to Eric B. & Rakim during the reign of his sophomore album, "Bad", on through the Hip Hop music's greatest period, known as The Golden Age Era. He had a STRONG 8 - 10 year run.

His battles with Kool Moe Dee were epic and his enthusiastic and energetic output in his performances has not been matched by any other MC before or since.

In short, saying that "LL overall was corny" is Hip Hop blasphemy.

around the time he first came out he did a freestyle at After Midnight in phillly -- whoo. shit was heat. it wasn't off the top of the head, and a couple of the lines ended up in songs, but young L had some shit wit 'em.

but mama said knock you out was wild corny to me.

peace & blessings,

this isnt even a fair comparison.

A legendary hiphop anthem vs. a good comeback song

Anthem usually wins that battle.

A better comparison would be FTP vs Self Destruction

or Mama Said vs Jingling Baby

The 1st being the 1st line "DON'T CALL IT A COMEBACK...I BEEN HERE FOR YEARS"

The 2nd is not even a bar its a sound effect "OOOOOOOH....LISTEN TO THE WAY I SLAAAAAAAAAVE!!!"

The casual fan can quote about 4-5 Fight the Power bars verbatim

As an album, "Mama Said" was a great comeback for LL with some good material. Especially after the mixed reaction from "Walking With A Panther."

That's not to diminish LL's spot in the pantheon. The cat is a pioneer and he's responsible for some of hip-hop's best. Personally, I believe "I'm Bad" was a more seminal hip-hop moment for LL. He took braggadocio rap to a level that was unseen with that song & video.

^^This^^ is True. His level of bragging elevated the already, ultra ego-centered art of MC'ing to even higher heights.
